Year 2000 A friend suggested the AA convention in Pattaya - OK, why not? Then someone suggested a trip up to Chiang Mai. Loved it. Flew back to UK and got on a train at Manchester airport to travel back to S.Yorkshire. It was cold, wet, and I looked around at all the miserable faces. I made a comparison with what I'd just left - the climate, the people and affordability. I made an instant decision, 'I'll never spend another winter in Europe!! I was a free agent, retired, divorced, family grown up. By Sept I was back out for a 6 month stay, a 'snowbird'. After I'd gone back to UK for the summer, I asked myself why am I even coming back? So out again in Sept, intent on making a longer stay. I was introduced to my now wife, a nurse. We clicked together and married quickly. I returned to UK with my new wife, just to show her round and meet the family - I then sold up everything, house, caravan, cars and moved lock,stock and barrel to Chiang Mai. I have never regretted it, I have an unbelievable quality of life, "Beyond my wildest dreams". Good 'ere, innitt?

A lot fewer rules, regulations and controls...in other words.......Freedom.

7 years - this is still my first trip here.....

First time was many years ago...girls were less money hungry...beer was Singha...food and lodging were very inexpensive...

Came back years later...every conversation with a Thai female leads to money...corruption everywhere...traffic chaos...heat and political unrest...

Could not leave quick enough...was spoiled on first trip...scammed thereafter...

A psycho ex gf who racked up $2000 ph bill while I was away and took my credit card to every bar she could while I was away, then after I dumped her and told her to move out attacked me and tried to have me arrested (playing the innocent GF card).

Too bad her ass ended up being hauled away when the cops saw the inside of my apartment which she smashed up, and saw me getting a ticket back to LOS a few months later.

Slightly twisted, but as many here, I returned because of the alternative comparisons back home.

They use the PI peso...can lookup exchange rate...changes frequently...and immigration laws by using Google to do the searching for you...best to visit...and talk to the local expats living there...
