are there inexpensive flights from utapao airport to chiang rai, or am I better off looking for something from Suv. airport of don muang?

I don't believe there are flights from Utapao to Chaing Rai.

AFAIK, Bangkok Airways has a daily flight to Koh Samui and Phuket from U-Tapao and Orient Thai Airlines operate flights to/from Chiang Mai, Bangkok and Phuket.

I think you'd be better off checking out Don Muang where most of the domestic flights depart from.

From Don Muang there are a few airlines with daily flights to / from CR

Utapao airport offer cheap charter flights to Novosibirsk in Russia. If you want to visit Russia a return flight will cost you less than $600 US.

Uthapao only serves the islands and then Phuket, if you want to go north you have to go to Bangkok, either airport.

Yes sadly true, I was there today dropping my daughter off for the daily flight to Phuket. One more flight today to Koh Samui and that's it.

6500 baht for a return flight from Phuket is not bad at all.

The Airport is very convenient for me to use compared to the Bangkok based ones and my 12 year old daughter is confident using it alone compared again to the 2 big ones.

Look on the Air Asia website they have deals to Chiang Rai at the moment return flights @ 1,000 baht from Don Meung.

Air Asia book fsr in advance and you can get a deal out of Don Muang.
