So i was at a party and someone said "they (thai women) all want to merry a foreigner, because we are rich!"

Instead of getting upset being so shallow, i stayed calm and let it/him go for the moment.

but then again i tried to analyse this for myself. here´s my theory so far:

For some women in Thailand, a marriage with a western man can be a chance to escape poverty.

If the man will provide for her family in Thailand, it will even raise her social status.

But many women have absolutely no interest in marrying a foreigner. They really love their country and their family and probaply have a good job as well. The idea of living in a foreign country 10.000 km away from their own culture (and food) is not an attractive option for many Thais.

Unfortunately, many Thai women cannot attract the quality of Thai men they can be happy together, often because of her poorly planned decisions earlier in life, such as not studying hard or forgetting to use a condom. As a consequence, they look for a foreigner as he is more accepting of her lack of education, Thai male spawn, etc.

I see it more as a choice of last resorts for many Thai females. There are some well educated, childless young Thai women who look for foreign husbands as they believe, rightly or wrongly that western men make better fathers, are less likely to cheat and so on. I don't know if money has so much to do with it as money will never make you happy long term.

Generally all Thai bar girl will want to marry farangs.

Thai men like ' Butterfly around ' term for local girls farang also do that but have better family responsibility to take care of children when he was prepare. Nowdays not only poor Issan girls many middle class are searching for farang husband, So i think some of fat and ugly in their own country are noting when coming in Thailand suddenly became a romeo.

Entirely depends on the background and thier individual circumstances, you cant generalise in that way.

That's not the point of the discussion. My second sentence says "any man", not "a man".

It seems to be what a lot of you need to believe. Conveniently it has a complementary opposite:

Sorry but there is not much merry in your OP to justify that ALL Thai women want to marry a foreigner. Pure generalization and stereotyping.

It all depends on their level of social status and class. To simplify it, we could say lower class/lower middle class are more likely to marry farangs because it benefits them financially. The upper middle and higher class women do not even want to associate with farangs, except if you are filthy rich and/or a celebrity. Also, divorced women and/or women with kids also tends to be more likely marry to farangs because Thai men (Asian men in general) do not want a women with ''baggage''. So in this case, foreigners are their only choice, because most farangs do not mind some ''baggage''.

Darker girls from out of town will marry what they can get...older, unfit farangs.

Strong middle class girls from BKK

will marry same in farang.

There are quite a number of lovely, glamorous, business savvy girls here in BKK that would like to meet an honest, decent, hard working, and handsome farang.

It's just that there are so few of these, that you rarely see the union.

All individuals, I have met thai girls who live well who like farang above thai men, I have met poor girls who would not touch a farang and vice versa.

While the quote is technically correct, spawn is widely used in the US to refer to the child of an individual, an is not necessarily derogatory. It's just slang.

If it was used in the UK, it would be "bloody spawn."

If somehow you've got it in your head that all Thai women want to be with you, then you're really setting yourself up to be fleeced. If Thai women think that all farangs have money, then what sort of Thai women would be interested in farangs? ANSWER: Thai women only interested in money. This is why we hear so many horror stories. But idiot farangs still want to perpetuate this myth.

Thai girls are very often brought up in the deference to the male in the household, and then are the one(s) who are expected to help look after their parent(s) when they get elderly, in appreciation for their upbringing and very often acting as unpaid carers for any offspring that some 'butterfly Thai men' have produced and then flown to newer and younger models ! It is strange then, where upper middle class and University educated Thai women who have all the choice they could want, still elect in some cases to choose a foreign partner or husband. Why? The aforementioned contributors have already supplied the answer!

Sweeping generalizations again made by people based on their own limited experiences.....welcome to the world of the internet warrior/philosopher.

Ok, sure there are some Thai women that look at a farang as being their ticket to either an escape route to that far off land of milk and honey, or if they are living here a walking ATM machine. If you are dumb enough to choose to associate with such women then you only have yourself to blame. Some people come here and simply refuse to learn even the most basic Thai and are totally blind to what is going on around them. These people can sometimes (not always) get stuck with a group of women that have learnt to speak English pretty well......and let me tell you folks, that wasnt at Mahildol university! You see this sad sight rather often, a clueless farang being lead around by his 'girlfriend', she is speaking broken English to him, giving him rudimentary instructions while backstabbing him on her IPhone to her friends that he bought her yesterday.......and he has no idea what is happening. This is the type of gentleman that I sometimes get stuck with at a bar because he wants to vent his spleen with any farang that will listen. He wants to spue out all his hatred of ALL Thai women when, eventually the penny drops and he finally realises he has been duped. Of course, its not his fault because ALL Thai women are like that!

In my case I learnt the hard way very quickly. I tend to not just trust any old pretty face. I met my wife at a school that I was teaching at. Before she met me my wife had never even considered marrying a farang. She is NOT uncommon in that respect. If you get your small head out of the tourist areas, learn to communicate at least to a reasonable level you will find that a new world opens up to you. This is when you start to meet women that will date you for more palatable reasons. I made it clear from the start that I was not a rich guy, but that I had a reasonable salary in Thai Baht, that I enjoyed living here and that I really had no intention of going home. This further weeded out any women that may have looked at me as a meal ticket. At the end of the day though, speaking reasonable Thai can often put off those looking to pull the wool over your eyes.

My advice….get out of the tourist areas where a lot of people are jaded with farang anyway, get off ThaiFriendly, learn to actually speak the language of the country you are in (yes the Thais should learn more English) and go out and meet women from ALL walks of life……not just in a freaking bar area!
