I'd like to see a western postal sorting office deal with a package only labelled in Thai script smile.png

DUUH! You write Thailand in English.

Not to mention the zip code is all numbers & that is really the main info a country looks at

when shipping.

Only final destination looks at street address

I apologize for pushing your buttons it's just because your pic looks so gay.

I sent mine via the post office with tracking, and marked the box "Plastic Safety Helmet". Got through OK, but can't guarantee it. The courier companies always seem to get checked and charged.

Whatever you do dont declare it as a gift as you have no recourse. As a purchase you can always ask for a adjustment with proper documentation.

My suit was $300 on closeout and they asked for almost 20,000 in tax (from memory). I produced a invoice and a paypal receipt and after they returned it to bkk it was reduced to 2000baht.

I did look it up here which stated 30% + 7% VAT

A friend of a friend who works at Customs in Bangkok

mania, custom tax is stated here. I use this government website only for custom tax calculations.

http://igtf.customs.go.th/igtf/findTaffDuty.do?param=main&contCode=c65&contGrupCode=MM50%20〈=e

http://igtf.customs.go.th/igtf/en/main_frame.jsp

It is 30 percent.

Yeah that site I used before too & it is funny

sometimes reads 30% +VAT 7%

other times like your 1st link shows 100%

But like RSD & most said 30% seems like it

I will know soon I guess smile.png

My view is that Customs are not as stupid as some people think they are. They do know the prices and identities of items but for private recipients they are willing to compromise a little by accepting a lower stated value if it is not totally ridiculous as long as they do not feel that the person who is recieving the goods behaves properly and is not commercial.

I have had no trouble with customs except for an item which was exempt from customs but had to pay 7% VAT.

They charged me a total rate of 10% and this seems like their compromise thatt they use for almost all private items where they get the VAT and enough to cover inspection and leave it at that rather than charge say a 15% Duty rate too.

In that case I missed out...in others this practice has put me ahead.

exactly.

They show mercy if you bring something for personal use.

They charged me 30 percent last time for an exhaust but they calculated the value as half so it hit me like 15 percent at the end virtually.

Also those exempt rates do not apply to indivduals unless supported by the proper commercial invoice, packing list and certificate of origin.

it is a nice tariff chart and database although a bit glitch but glad we have it!

Yep, you have to choose general rate and it shows the exact rate.

Exhausts are at section 8708.92.

I would beg to differ.I would say they would have no clue if you were importing a piece of crap ikea desk or a herman miller desk.

As long as your description says desk there are no requirements to enter a brand name. Also if your friend buys it for you its used and he can sell it to you for whatever he/she wants. So no one is breaking any rule or doing anything illegal.

It is not the price that you are charged that counts it is the value the customs assesses it to have here. Mislabling can work...or you can lose the goods and if you have declared the value wrong hughe penalties including jail.

No one said to mislable anything. Although customs generally assesses value you can contest it. Lets say the op the helmet on sale for 50% off should he be taxed on the retail price or the price he paid?

There is no such thing as declaring a wrong value. The shipper/owner can sell it for whatever they want its their property. If customs disagrees you need to show payment, receipt and possibly the ad.

Huge penalties and jail i dont think so

It's not you who declares the value- it's the shipper. The worst thing that will happen to an individual who imported a few one-off items is that they will disagree with the assessed customs duty and the items are returned to their origin- saying 'jail' is a possibility is a bit much.

THere was a poster (and I know someone else too) who had goods bought in...Customs sent a form asking the value and item, he returned it with a low value and a slightly wrong description and was threatened with arrest for a false declaration to a public official which is a very serious offence here. After a little negotion he had to pay a penalty of 4 times the inflated duty rate plus some under the counter. Generally you will just lose the good but that is not guaranteed.

That sounds like a good way to extort a bribe, and I tend to doubt that that's the entire story- having dealt with Thai customs for many years, it sounds ridiculous.

If someone has first-hand experience with something like this I'd like to hear it, though.

Haven't you got that helmet yet? It's been months, did you ship it surface?

hahah yes a month since I asked about shipping such things but

just had it shipped on the 20th priority air from US

It arrived on the 25th in Thailand yesterday & is being processed now

Will let you know the outcome.

I imagine a day or two more as I see it is in Bangkok now & I am CM

Was a bit worried as it shipped right before the whole

political deal started but seems postal is business as usual

so should know soon.

Thanks
