Well at least dough and dick start off with the same letter. In either case it is quite a corruption to push things as far as dick, is it not?

Spotted dick dates from a time when dick was not a term for the, well, 'dick'. Also this use of the word 'dick' is just another corruption of another word. Dick can also mean 'private investigator'. Check a good dictionary.

A word about spotted dick, the pudding, it is fantastic when well made. It is best with custard, a real winter warmer. it is easy to make and also readily available in the shops in the UK.

Not as good as Rasberry Trifle, but spotted dick is rather yummy!

Don't think so. In the UK Jam is a preserve made from real fruits and, added to toast for breakfast or, to desserts. Here Jelly is a dessert, comes in a rubbery concentrate that you add water to then set in the fridge, kids love it.

Jam and jelly are different here as well. Now a jelly doesn't have to be jelly, when it was first made it was preserves. It's a thin cake, like sponge that gets a creamy whip and jam spread all over it and then it is rolled up.

What you are describing is known in English as a "Swiss Roll" heaven only knows why. Nice with custard though.

I think I have heard that used here too. When hostess started making jelly rolls for the masses I believe they called them Swiss Rolls.

I don't fancy it, I can't stand dried fruit either so I'm with the poster who said that, the one who mentioned jam roly poly though, you're in trouble, I need to track down a source of suet now.....................................

Gonna cook me up a nice big roly poly of jam and cover it with home made custard, none of that Birds gear, the real deal - milk, flour, vanilla pod......
