all those CCTV cameras installed in Bangkok

Hi all - just curious about all these cameras that have been installed in Bangkok over the past few years

I returned to Thailand at the end of last year and was surprised to see so many CCTV cameras installed everywhere. I mean they are everywhere. Clusters of 4 are installed at each and every bach soi that I have seen.

I did some googling now and again, but didn't come across a whole lot of specific information on it. I didn't come across info on how the system works but I imagine it is supposed to record and retain enough video information (pre and post incident) to have a good chance of being useful in nabbing the baddies. Or is it just another white elephant ? I hope not - does anyone have any real info on what it's about ?

just curious

i noticed some just appeared at the end of my soi the other day and in my local park a few months ago.

being thailand they're probably not installed properly, will be cheap so the picture quality will be awful, many probably wont be connected to anything, they wont be maintained or upgraded and some somchai on 15 baht and hour will be responsible for monitoring them.

oh yes, and someone high in city hall will have a very impressive bank balance.

These Cameras can only "catch the idiots who commit crimes" if the said idiots do so within the sight of the cameras and the authorities immediately have access to the recordings.

Frankly it's nonsense to believe that these cameras are much use in Crime suppression, much less in investigation or resolution after a crime has been committed.

There is no way the cameras can be monitored "real time" 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

So - perhaps the input is recorded - for later review?

How many cameras = How many Tapes / CD's?

Even with SSD Drives recording the information; they automatically overwrite data within a day or so - usually long after the Thai Police Department will get on the job to investigate a crime that's been recorded.

Thanks for your replies guys,

I realize of course that it wouldn't be at all possible to have all of these cameras monitored 24/7.

(as p-brownstone said above) Each camera having it's own solid state memory sounds like the most practical way it could be done.

It is then the luck of the draw that the crime occurs (or the persons involved in the crime pass) in the field of view of the camera lens at some stage..

Anyway I suppose it's jobs for the boys & that's a good thing isn't it ? is it ?

Maybe it's just me, retired and too much time on my hands to think about these things.

I walked down a local soi a few days ago, about 300 to 400 metres in length. There were 16 CCTV cameras installed along its length (no need to count them as they were each numbered 1 to 16).

Somebody must have made a killing on the procurement contract.

Wasn't there something in the BP last week or so saying that in some areas only a handful out of 10's of the cameras that were checked were actually in operation.

London is soon to lose its crown!
