Thailand: Public holiday on May 13 - shops, bars, restaurants barred from selling alcohol

Is it again with 6 month prison if they catch you selling alcohol?

I can't recall that Buddha told "and punish these who don't follow me without mercy!"

I doubt Mohammed ever said anything like that either but that's the wild wacky world of religion for you.

Jesus drank wine!

that's fine , buy the booze on the 12th and enjoy it at home on the 13th .

That is probably too sensible and requires some forethought. Why is it we go through this faux fear every time there is a booze ban day? TIT, the mom 'n pop stores will sell alcohol, and the big tourist spots will too--I spent the last "no alcohol day" in Nana Plaza. The worst we had to do was drink out of a glass and pay as you ordered. Of course, that was an election, and this is a religious day, but during the last religious day, I drank booze from a coffee cup in my local here in the South. Just look around, you'll find someone willing to sell alcohol.

I surprised by the lack of respect that I read in some of the posts here. Why did you come to thailand? Just to live cheap ? Eat cheap? And complain like old farang ? Why don't you go home and drink yourself stupid ? You cannot go one day without moaning about a tradition that is important to some people? It makes me sick to read this poor attitude here !

Thailand says that it respect all religions but does not respect that the non-Buddhists maybe want a beer a beer or a glass of wine to their dinner. Lord Buddha was born in Nepal and I have never heard about this hypocrisy over there.

Even I don't want the glass wine, who is standing above me and decide if I am allowed? Chalerm? Yingluck? Surely it isn't Buddhist religion to punish with jail terms for not following. Actually it seems very un-Buddhist.

Yes I also think it is very un-Buddhist. I remember back in the early 80's that Alcohol was not allowed to be served in the bars and restaurants, anyone out there who knows when this rule started?

Hey c'mon guys, we have a real gentleman here with respectful behaviors and a moral teacher's attitude. Edifying! We will learn the right reasons why one ought to come in Thailand. We are poor, we make him sick. Let's watch his vomit. bah.gif

Is alcohol being sold in restaurants today?

Yes, depending on where you eat.

And you don't even need to eat there either.

I was brought up to respect others there feelings and their beliefs, even if i don't agree with some in part. However we are foreigners and always will be, are you going to go to Israel or dubai and complain you can't eat a bacon sandwich on the beach? I joined a very special fraternity many years back and found out a lot about various truth that are hidden from the profane, but i don't go round moaning about it or taking away people's believes. Have some respect !

clap2.gifAnother smart ass who needs to be praised for his marvelous soul.

The profane here tells you that I will not eat bacon on the beach in Israel and Dubai and I will not eat your baloney either: moaning isn't a lack of respect! Hence, I accept your moaning about what's posted here. Respectful enough?

Do they ever go to work, these people?

Illegal selling equals nice on the spot fines.

Because of quality tourist holiday Thailand, not to disappoint arriving unsuspecting ones how about.----

Having 3 months of NO ALCOHOL during the rainy season then 9 months of endless boozing in the high season. Then everyone will be aware.

The only other way is for tourist areas to be exempt.

OR stay the same where no one knows who is open to sell or not. Depends on the police in your area.

Most quality tourists don't have such a high tech vehicle, you're using. Or with other words, abusing an animal as a truck.

Unlike you Gil , I wasn't moaning ... i was stating a fact ! ...The fact that you cannot go a day without having a drink in a public place ?! without moaning about a rule that has been applied! I respectfully remind you that you are a foreigner here and as such you must play by the rules , unless you are lawless scum that trys to bend the rules ?! Which is it ?

As a crusader, you could form your own volunteer Farang respect police force with the other puritans wandering around Thailand in bandanas and utility belts disposing of any beers you see a foreigner drinking on a holy day....

Its such a commodity that to deny the selling of alcohol on special days appears to be such a waste of time and effort.

The bigger chain Stores like 7/1 are controlled by this mantra but you guys know very well that all the smaller shops continue

to sell ice cold beer.

Sometimes my local shop says you must be careful for me. Yes ok and I appreciate that.

Its not about denying alcoholics alcohol, its supposed to be a solemn day so there should be no partying or at least not as much as openly.

Alcohol represents partying.

So u guys who manage to get your favourite drop on the day should try to be quiet about it.

Thats all.

Life goes on.

Quoting you:

"Why don't you go home and drink yourself stupid ?"

Is this respectful my dear little angel? I don't think your mum would be proud of such a crude and judgemental language.

In before the "Waaaaa - I can't drink that day and it's going to kill the tourist industry because WAAAAAAA !" replies.

Did you know that back in the "real" world there are places that don't sell alcohol on Sundays because, you know, religion and stuff ! There are still places where shops aren't allowed to open on Sundays. And they have these things called "Statutory Holidays" and stuff ! Don't they know it will absolutely kill all those business's if they are closed for a day once in a while ?!?!?! WAAAAAAAAA.

The absolute horror I feel every time I try going to the bank on on a Sunday ! Egads ! I have to wait ONE DAY until I can do my banking ??!? What kind of #*!?@& place is this !

It's really quite pathetic to whine about something that happens so infrequently. A couple religious holidays per year, maybe a couple elections. So what, 6-7 days out of an entire year that bars are supposed to close ?

WAAAAAAAAAAAA

Maybe it's the people who cannot go a day without a drink. We all need balance in our lives & this is one way to help restore it.

Some of us have businesses that sell alcohol to make a living in a country that love controlling the people.Nothing to do with people who can not go a day with out a drink. It's hard enough to make a living in this place without all these no drinking days. The temples will be coining it in though with all the sheep paying loads in merit making

Well.........if you want to live in a more remote area, that's your choice.

Where we are, we have irrigation chanels......we have water all year....we're close to markets.....schools...medical care.....we're laughing 'cos it's so easy here.......

In my area we grow crops, have orchards, cows and yes...buffalos.........you guys laugh because it's as not rural as where?? :))

Everyone here seems to be moaning about not being able to drink alcohol on the 13th.

You can still drink alcohol, it is only an offence to sell it.

It is the bar owners that should be moaning as it is hard enough to make money here being open 7 days a week.

There are place you get the death penalty for being gay, or places you get tortured if you drink alcohol. There are places with laws in which positions you are allowed to have sex.....There are many crazy things on this planet, but how does one nonsense justify another nonsense?

What about sensational falangs bashing other falangs. THEM, they behave the right way. Any Falang living here has a right to say whatever he wants to, even if by law you cannot talk publicly against certain people. Freedom of speech it's called, no?

What is the second source of income in this country? We pay big deal to be part of the discussion. And what is not expensive is cheap too. Moralists, purists, we know you well enough. Go pray in a wat and pretend you are part of them. They just don't care about you.
