It's Heartbleed and yes it was OpenSSL version 1.0.1 through 1.0.1f that was affected. Earlier and later (1.0.1g) are not affected. OpenVPN was vulnerable but patches are out to correct it.

Not all applications on your network can use L2TP however its more secure the PPTP.

If you can use L2TP instead PPTP use it.
