Durian and alcohol ?

Recommended Posts

Seriously, if someone said this to me I would just grab a thermometer, eat durian and measure my temperature every 30 minutes to show the person that they were wrong.

(Or right, of course- obviously I don't believe it, but the test would prove it one way or the other!)

xsick.gif.pagespeed.ic.tVTSNn-2vr.png I would not and under no circumstances eat durian.....

Before I would try it, I would test if the own urine therapy works.......

Judging from the smell I believe it will cause, high blood pressure, rage, depressions, high temperature, nausea, difficulty in breathing (even for bystander), halitosis.....

This same belief is prevalent throughout southeast Asia, and I'm not so sure it's pure myth. I once ate a durian puff (i.e., durian paste, not fresh durian) with a quantity of beer. My stomach ballooned out and it was bloody uncomfortable... i wasn't close to death, but death would have brought some needed relief. As an experiment, I subsequently bought some fresh durian and dropped a piece of it in a glass of beer. The beer started throthing like mad. Not sure if it was a reaction to the carbonation or the alcohol, but I guess that was the reaction that had happened in my stomach. I have never mixed durian and beer since, in my stomach or otherwise.

You must have smelled unbelievable.....If your wife didn't divorce you, she truly loves you regardless the smell....

I think durian does raise body temperature. I think so because of a special tool I've got. It's called a thermometer.

With all due respect, I would not let you put your tool anywhere near my rectum.

Yea, I'd be loath to call my "special tool" a "thermometer." Jingthing, you must've at least paused.

:-)

I used to combine the two all the time and I love it. Been in KSA two years now missing my spiky smelly friend with the soft heart. Back next month for two months. It's gonna get smelly in our house. The durian poo the next day has a pretty strong flavour too!!

The poo has a strong flavour, please tell you meant smell.

There are some people who quite enjoy the taste of faeces, not sure why, but nothing as queer as folk.

Koh Chang groves the best durians that I've tried, not sure how you still haven't tried durian living on Koh Chang?

For the folks complaining about the smell - FYI, there are a lot of different varieties of this fruit, not all of them have this strong (un)famous smell and not at all stages of the fruit's life.

Better ask an Honest Thai (that if you can find one :D ) about what and when. My wife knows when to buy it and which one tastes good.

Anyone who wish to defy the odds can try but I have witnessed 3 deaths in Singapore relating to durian + alcohol deaths.

You have personally witnessed, or heard about them?

However, if you eat durian indoors, you may encounter death, as the smell may cause someone to commit a crime.

I had to evacuate my condo and move to the balcone last night when my gf choose to have some durian. Anyway, I got her back by having a good cigar. ha

It does make you feel funny.

Something to do with the body temperature raising quickly and too high.

True, because durian is loaded with sugar, same alcohol.

Durian BAAN, the small smellier ones, sometimes with a blueish tinge inside, are by far and away the best. The big durian FARM, are just that, farmed. Tasteless. Akin to comparing wild with farmed Salmon.

Where did I say I've not eaten Durian? I've certainly not eaten faeces though.

Actually Chanthaburi is the best place for Durian.

I'm not 100% on this but I think this is the reason Thais believe this: Chinese medicine considers all food either hot or cold. It's not about the temperature of the food but of the affect on the body. Alcohol is very hot so when drunk it should be balanced out by cold foods (yin and yang). Durian is an extremely hot food so the two are a bad combination. Not sure about what studies have been done on this but I agree with the other posters who describe a funny feeling after mixing the two. Here in Eastern Thailand (the fruit bowl of the country) Durian season overlaps mangosteen season. Mangosteen are a cold food, so people often pair the two fruits together. It does seem to balance out. Plus they're both delicious!

Yeah, get it with the durian and mangosteen, but I think alcohol actually LOWERS body temperature. Durian does raise it.

I still think you could kill yourself eating a whole durian with a bottle of whisky.

Also a Big Mac with a bottle of whisky.

Etc., etc.

urban myth but farang no understand...

There appears to be a fair bit of evidence to say it may not entirely be a myth.

Do you have any links for reference please ? I hope it's not the same as the new urban legend about how 1000 boats can push the flood water out of Thailand hahaha

Sorry, all these are not high profile cases. They were within the vicinity I stayed for almost a decade. Not kidding. They are real people and real cases.

when I lived in LOS I had some durian after coming back from school one day and slept right through to the next morning. i.e. about 6pm to 7am never done that before and it only happened once. I would not mix the two though, especially if you are older and not fit or with heart conditions, play it safe.

"DASH diet

Durian fruit can be a part of a Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, or DASH, diet, which is an eating pattern designed to lower high blood pressure, according to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The plan calls for four to five servings of fruit per day on a 2,000-calorie diet, and a half-cup of fresh durian counts as a serving." http://www.livestrong.com/article/487194-durian-fruit-high-blood-pressure/

Durians and booze: worse than a stinking hangover

ACCORDING to Asian folklore, eating the famously pungent durian - known as the "king of fruits" - along with alcohol can kill you. Now intrepid researchers have confirmed there may be some truth in this supposition. It is the first time combining a fruit with booze has been scientifically linked to an adverse reaction.

John Maninang and Hiroshi Gemma from the University of Tsukuba, Japan, wondered if the reported side effects were due to durian's high sulphur content impairing alcohol breakdown. In test tubes they found that durian extract inhibited the activity of aldehyde dehydrogenase - an enzyme that clears toxic breakdown products - by up to 70 per cent (Food Chemistry, DOI: 10.1016/j.foodchem.2009.03.106). http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20327253.200-durians-and-booze-worse-than-a-stinking-hangover.html

=======================================================================================================================================================================================================================

Translation;

inhibiting the activity of aldehyde dehydrogenase means that alcohol is metabolized slower / less efficiently in the pretense of durian. the person could get drunk faster, stay drunk longer, or if they drink high amounts, could possibly succumb to alcohol poisoning.

Alcohol's effect on body temperature: hypothermia, hyperthermia or poikilothermia?

snippet

Thus, the physiological mechanisms for the dissipation of body heat as well as those for heat production are incapacitated by the drug. Clearly, alcohol is a poikilothermic agent, and thus, the decline in body temperature observed in the animal typically kept at a laboratory room temperature of 20 degrees C--24 degrees C represents the result of a cold challenge and is not due to a postulated "hypothermic" effect of alcohol.

ive done the big mac and the double big mac with loads of alcohol more times than i can count

unless you are old or unhealthy heart in some way i dont think theres much risk of dying

but some folks maybe more intolerant to adverse reactions than others

a wasp or bee sting is enough to kill some people and merely irritate others for a short time ........
