Quake damage reports still coming in from Chiang Rai

CHIANG RAI 14 May 2014 (NNT) – Earthquake damage reports were still coming in from Chiang Rai on Tuesday, as numerous aftershocks continued to jolt the province.

According to the Meteorological Department's Seismological Bureau, more than 744 aftershocks have been reported following the magnitude 6.3 earthquake that struck Chiang Rai early last week.

On Monday evening a magnitude 5.0 tremor struck Mae Lao district in Chiang Rai. At least one house in the district was heavily damaged, and residents could no longer take shelter under their own roof.

Locals in Phan and Mae Lao, the two districts that were most jolted by last week's quake, are still frightened over the quake and the constant aftershocks, and many have decided to stay outdoors instead of inside their homes.

Officials from the local Disaster Prevention and Mitigation office and military units have been working to remove debris as well as repair homes damaged by the tremors.

The Seismological Bureau also reported a magnitude 3.8 tremor that originated in Mae Lao district on Tuesday evening, the most powerful among several other smaller tremors detected on the same day.

POLITICS
Prayuth accepts HM's advice as an option

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- A proposal by a group of retired senior military officers to seek His Majesty's advice on the deepening political crisis is an option, but whether it could be implemented depended on many factors including rules, acceptance and appropriateness, Army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha said yesterday.

Prayuth said he had read the proposal addressed to him and other top commanders, which was submitted by the Man of State group last week.

The group said it expected the commanders-in-chief of the Army, Navy and Air Force as well as the supreme command to decide on the proposal before today.

"I have read the proposal, meaning I am already informed of it. The proposal is just the group's idea and there is no pressure for its acceptance. It was sent to me for consideration only. I call on the public not to criticise it."

"General Saiyud [Kerdphol] and the group were offering an option only. Whether that option could be implemented or not would depend on the rules, conditions, acceptance and other factors, which would need to be studied in detail to prevent further obstacles," the Army chief said.

It was not reliant on refusal or acceptance by the Armed Forces, as it would have to pass through many procedures and involve others to examine the issue. "We do, however, appreciate their loyalty to the monarch and their determination to bring peace to the country. It's better than those who do nothing but negatively criticise others without giving any thought to the damage this is causing the country," he said.

Yingluck departure must not be wasted

BANGKOK: -- So, what's new, really? Yingluck Shinawatra is gone as prime minister, but it's not as though she had been functional as the government leader for the past few months anyway. It reminds us of the fate of Samak Sundaravej, Somchai Wongsawat and, to a certain extent, Abhisit Vejjajiva.
