UDD Skeptical of Army's Stance On Interim PM

By Khaosod Eng.

BANGKOK — Leader of the pro-government Redshirts has urged the commander-in-chief of the Royal Thai Army to explicitly announce that he will not, if offered, accept a job as an interim Prime Minister.

"I want to hear from the mouth of Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha that he will not accept the role as a non-partisan Prime Minister, before he retires," said Jatupon Prompan, chairman of the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD).

"In the past, Gen. Prayuth always countered every kind of news. But why is he silent on this matter?" Mr. Jatupon told a crowd of pro-government supporters at a rally on Aksa Avenue in western Bangkok today.

Since acting Prime Minster Niwatthamrong Boonsongphaisarn took the premiership on 7 May, anti-government protesters have been calling on the Senate to replace him with an appointed, royally-approved “neutral” PM.

Anti-government protesters claim that the Senate can legally appoint a new PM under of Article 7 of the Constitution, whereas Governmental officials and a number of legal experts have argued that such a move would be unconstitutional.

Article 7 of the Constitution, which reads: “Whenever no provision under this Constitution is applicable to any case, it shall be decided in accordance with the constitutional tradition in the democratic regime of government with the King as Head of State.”

Mr. Jatupon's demand came a day after Gen. Prayuth reportedly refused to comment on the allegation that he is being considered for the job as an interim PM.

Speaking on radio talk show yesterday, Bangkok Post "military reporter" Wassana Nanuam claimed that she received texts from Gen. Prayuth saying that Mr. Jatupon will have to take responsibility for his words if his allegation is proven to be untrue.

He also reportedly said that the military's recent warning to invoke martial law should not be interpreted as a sign that the armed forces is taking sides in the country's political conflict. According to Ms. Wassana, Gen. Prayuth said that the warning was meant to deter all sides from committing further violence on members of the public, and that the military is not supporting any political faction.

"It doesn't mean we will launch a coup," Ms. Wassana quoted Gen. Prayuth as saying.

He reportedly added, "Don't accuse the military of bias ... they should see who has done what in the past, like what happened in the 2010 [Redshirt mass protests]. Why don't they talk about that? The military was deployed to restore order, but we end up being victimised. Please give us some fairness."

However, Mr. Jatupon said that the Redshirts will not be assured of Gen. Prayuth's impartiality until he denies the allegation himself.

"If Gen. Prayuth said that he will not be [Prime Minister], we will give Gen. Prayuth the longest applause we can do," Mr. Jatupon said, "But if Gen. Prayuth refuses to act on this matter, we will take it that he indeed wants to be a Prime Minister."

Seems Jatuporn is scared of something.

... like what happened in 2010... There. Twas when tough guy Jatuporn told the redshirt supporters at a mass meeting to each bring a bottle of oil and burn Bangkok. Later we had burning buildings, shootings and bombings. There is the reason why Jatuporn fears the near future. Another reservation for Dubai coming.

Lock up the rats, make the world a better place.

Truly bizzare, this leader of the "phrai" looks to have bought the late Liberace's wardrobe. In my opinion it makes this multi-millionaire look like a rich man, which is a shame after all his efforts to appear a grass roots hero. Still, given the IQ of his fanbase I don't suppose many will cotton on.

The idiots new robes......obviously, there's more cash in the bank now......so much more fitting to look like a pox doctors clerk...instead of a lowly rice farmer

Everything about the PTP or UDD is sceptical, they and they alone are pushing for either a referendum or elections , no other party has voiced any opinions or options it is really what about me the PTP, so the question is, what are they afraid of or what have the smart ar!!ses have up their sleeve, not being one to trust these Spivs, I suspect strong retaliation to all opposition, if they are returned to power and no meaningful talks on reforms. bah.gif

Yes, my friends and I have been commenting on his outfits. We are also amused by his Chow Na inspired wardrobe made of the best materials Liberace could buy.

Undoubtedly he is saving his best outfits for the katoey show at the crowbar hotel.

Anyway bizzare the leader of the "phrai" trying to protect his super rich leader who got his money from corruption of taxpayers money...so basically stolen from the "phrai".

How do you know it has strong appeal? I don't doubt you, but I would like to see the evidence as I don't see any Thai's dressed as cowboy's in Phuket.

I had a grandson in Afghanistan and he said that the below person used to wear cowboy hats in Pakistan as well? Not sure why, but did that have a lot of appeal with his peers too?

Be fair. Jatuporn is not a member of the rural poor. He, Nattawut and co. have been richly rewarded for their efforts, as have all the middle men and canvassers who got PT elected. No different from the other side in my opinion.

The red shirts will actually stand for nothing other than the other side of a battle between elite families until they independently set themselves up as a political party with grassroots leaders. It's not going to happen of course, and this is partly why the deadlock remains.

There are two sides to the dirty coin.

Thai traditional silk attire is aesthetic in its design and appealing to the eye, to include color scheme and accessories. One doesn't have to be Thai to appreciate the fact. A number of fahlang enjoy the various Thai festivals in many respects, clothing styles being prominent among them.

Political views are one thing, but the inability and/or unwillingness to acknowledge certain cultural virtues of a civilization strongly suggest the presence of philistines.

Yes Liberace was ahead of his time and so many rudimentary types here are behind the present time - or it is simply that their inherently myopic ethnocentric time has already passed.

In the United States the many ethnicities have for two centuries held their traditional festivals in their neighborhoods or throughout their cities so the richness of the tapestry of world cultures is continually on display, often each weekend during summer months. It's an enriching experience and it's a treat actually be in a country where traditional attire is both so exquisite and regularly on display.

Politics aside.

It's all a bit odd really. In 2010 in the cases so far investigated the army killed people who posed no threat and so disobeyed orders. Some of those were redshirts and some weren't. Now Jutaporn's concern is whether the General might accept a job as a non partisan PM rather than the fact that the party he supports is protecting the army.

Are you kidding me? What a bunch of blather. Condemning posts for their comments on attire? Free game here, dude.

It's so pathetic that you actually thought you might have EDUCATED someone with your sophomoric language. WFC

about the clothes, was that your message? Get a haircut without clenching your bunghole, eh?
