Danish woman robbed by European-looking man

CHIANG MAI: -- A Danish woman was robbed of THB10,000 after a European-looking man threatened to hurt her unless she handed over the money she had just withdraw from a cash machine at a busy Chiang Mai shopping mall on May 18, according to local police.

The victim, Michelle Broding Lorsglas, 20, a tourist from Denmark, told police she was having a meal at a food centre when she was approached by the man who first asked for help, claiming he had been robbed and needed small cash to call home.

Pol Lt Witoon Ruangwattanachai of Chiang Mai Police Station said the Danish woman agreed to offer him some money and went to the nearest ATM to withdraw cash. The man followed her to the ATM and then accosted her to hand over THB10,000, the police investigator said.

Police were gathering evidence, including footages from surveillance cameras in and around the crime scene, to try to identify and apprehend the suspected criminal.

My email notification: "Danish woman robbed by Farang man in Chiang Mai"

Why not "Farang woman robbed by European-looking man" ... or "Farang woman robbed by Farang man"?

There are millions of "European-looking" men in Australia, the United States of America and England.

Question: Who is writing these headlines?!

Answer: Someone who needs education.

He was asking her in Danish.....

If she were Thai, she would be a girl.

What's wrong with the headline? It is known she is Danish as she reported the crime and obviously gave her nationality, and a "European looking" guy distinguishes the SOB so we know he is not Thai / Asian / Middle Eastern. All you guy get upset when there is a report about a French / British / American or whatever other western national with a middle eastern or otherwise NON EUROPEAN name committed a crime.

I think the headline is clear and serves the purpose - be careful of EVEN European looking person asking you to give him cash help.

What are you on about? The first impression I got from both the headline and e-mail notification was that a white woman got robbed by a white guy. Which is what happened. Made perfect sense to me. Being a little anal-retentive, are we?

Stupid woman for going to an ATM with a stranger.

Stupid man for mugging her when she was going to give him the money anyway.

"Farang" is a Thai word that has no place in an English news headline. It looks amateur. Can Thai Visa just use "foreign/foreigner", or perhaps "Caucasian" if referring to a person of fair or light complexion? "European-looking man" is also very imprecise, excluding "white" Americans, Canadians, Australians etc. as well as olive-skinned southern European and Mediterranean nationalities.

Another anal-retentive fellow. "Farang" is a perfectly acceptable word to use in an English news headline in Thailand. Because everyone knows exactly what is meant. Why are you guys making such a huge deal out of this? A white woman got robbed by a white guy in Chiang Mai, which is not something that happens every day. That's the news, not the freakin word usage to describe said individuals.

Dog bite man, not news, farang rob farang, big news....

Good to know he was not Australian, American or Russian!

Some of our friends in Euro-Farang-land substitute "European" for Caucasian, so they consider people to be African or European or Asian or some combination of the same, based on the supposed origin of the race.

Fortunately they didn't supply his name or someone would rush to point out that his name didn't sound European enough.

As this bench in Apartheid South Africa suggests, "European" translates as white or Caucasian.

Presumably you are American and are still coming to terms with the reality that not everyone in the world speaks English like they do in Beaver Dump, Iowa??

Back to the original post, I suppose it's news that European/Farang people can be thieves.

You must be very astute. Since there are 60M-plus Thais in Thailand, yes, it does narrow it down quite a lot.

The fact she arrived at the shopping centre with him and left with him on a motorcycle is kind of odd.

Evidently it was newsy enough for you to read it and comment.

Given that it's an English new headline printed and read in Thailand ... and given that farang is the most commonly used Thai word for caucasian ... and used by many caucasian expats in Thailand ... I'd say the headline is very appropriate.

When did Russia move away from Europe? must have had a big digger and some powerful tugs to separate the European continent - these tectonic plates are hard to budge

Danish woman robbed by European-looking man who needed to pay for long time

It sounds like bargirl English, low class or no class. How many "farang" use the word "farang" to each other in everyday conversation? Do you ever see Bangkok Post or The Nation give news stories headlines like "Farang worry about new visa restrictions"? It definitely has no place in professional news reporting. It should be avoided for the same reason that colloquial or potentially divisive words like "Yank", "gringo", "Pom" or "honky" would not be used.
