I need some advice about a tourist visa for Australia.

Some background info.

My Thai wife and I ( Dutch national living together in Thailand ) are married for over 12 years and are going to Sydney for holiday and visiting friends.

As my air miles ( emirates ) where experiencing I had to book the flights now but we are going for holiday on 31 March next year for a few weeks.

My wife needs a visa off-course but I cannot find any information about when she can apply for this visa.

As we have to go to Bangkok for this I would like to combine it with other appointments so we don’t have to travel extra for this visa.

Is it possible to apply for this tourist visa at an earlier stage or do we have to wait until a few weeks before we are going? I would prefer to do it somewhere around August if possible.

We have all the documents ( I hope ) marriage certificate, Bankbooks, Salary’s, House/Car books and an invitation letter from our friend and a letter from myself as a co-sponsor for my wife.

Do I need any more paperwork to make the application more successful?

All information is more than welcome.

Go to the following URL that provides the document checklist:

http://www.immi.gov.au/visas/visitor/_pdf/600-document-checklist.pdf

You can apply for a Tourist visa for your wife online, go to http://www.immi.gov.au/Services/Pages/immiaccount.aspx

Generally you would apply for a tourist visa three months or less prior to travel

Hi Simple1 Thanks for your information but unfortunately my wife can not use the online application system as she is a Thai citizen.

I have the information about the required documents from the VFS website so this should not be a big problem.

But i would like to have some advise about when she can do the application and tips for a successful application.

Are you sure? Can you not complete the application on her behalf, if I recall correctly there is a facility in the application where you/she declares that you have assisted.

Its generally accepted that the challenge is to provide 'proof' of intent to return to Thailand, the required info is covered in the application doco checklist.

Again it is usual to apply about three months or less prior to travel, lets see if others have more constructive info

EDIT: I understand the Immi website that states Thais cannot apply online is out of date, but crosscheck

Thais have to do the paper form.

Unfortunately, the website you download this stuff from is confusing.

Just for clairification ... direct from DFAT Bangkok yesterday ...

"Dear Client,

Please refer to the following link which provides clarification as to your enquiry.

Nationals of Thailand are not eligible to apply for a Tourist Visa online.
You will need to lodge a paper application with our office in Bangkok.

Interesting as I assisted a Thai national 3/4 weeks ago with Visa 600 online application that was approved. Do you know if there is an exception when sponsored by an Oz citizen?

Mate, I honestly don't know.

Maybe you were lucky ... a varience which is not uncommon in Thailand.

I read that you can get a drivers licence on a Tourist Visa (the member lived in Pattaya and could).

In Samut Prakan, I tried and was declined.

Some years ago, I opened a Bank Account on a Tourist Visa, when others said you couldn't.

Maybe, when applying for the Visa on-line, you were the lucky influence in that regard, I don't know, just relaying what the reply was from the Embassy.

With your luck ... any chance of the LOTTO numbers for this Saturday night ... rolleyes.gif

Before I moved to Phuket my GF used to get her Australian visas through a place locally.

She would complete the forms and lodge them with the passport to be sent to Bangkok. They were back within a week.

Unfortunately she doesn't remember who they were, and I never did know, so I can't say who they are other than a location just north of supercheap.

Somebody on the Phuket forum would know.

Not in my case, no.. I don't think the sponsor's nationality has any bearing.

No electronic visas for Thais.

However, you don't have to travel to Bangkok to lodge the forms.

Use the courier services outlined in my post #10.
