Gunshots heard on Aksa road as red shirts, PDRC told to go home

BANGKOK: -- Pro-government red-shirt protesters at Aksa Road rally site began returning home yesterday after the Army seized power and soldiers were sent in to take control of the situation.

Earlier, the soldiers seized control of the United Front for Democratic against Dictatorship (UDD) rally site just outside Bangkok and told everybody to get down on the ground. They later detained UDD leader Weng Tojirakarn as well as other red-shirt leaders.

What sounded like gunshots were heard as protesters were seen leaving the Aksa Road rally site either on foot or in a vehicle. The military also provided buses for both red-shirt protesters on Aksa Road and the anti-government People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) supporters on Rajdamnoen Avenue and Chaeng Wattana Road.

Protest leader announces victory

Once the power seizure was announced, PDRC co-leader Phra Buddha Issara went on stage at the Chaeng Wattana rally site yesterday to announce victory and urge the crowds to go home.

The monk said he had advised PDRC secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban, who is being detained by the Army, to not push too hard but he did not listen.

The monk explained that the Army had no choice but to seize power as the second round of talks had clearly failed. He added that he would find a team of lawyers to help fight for the release of PDRC leaders who have been detained as well as those facing arrest.

The monk, who appeared to be quite emotional, said the Army had given him their word that they will help all Thais become "good people".

Buddha Issara also allowed the Army to dismantle the PDRC protest site at Chaeng Wattana Road before handing over three reform proposals to the soldiers. The Army sent about 20 buses to help the protesters get home, and it is believed that the monk is under detention at the First Artillery Battalion Headquarters.

Meanwhile, news of Army seizure and the detention of pro-government red-shirt leaders was met with jubilation by PDRC supporters.

However, the protest leaders urged the crowds to behave normally and stay put, while PDRC co-leader Thaworn Senneam issued a statement saying all protest leaders were safe and that the guards had been told not to carry weapons.

In Chiang Rai, red-shirt leader Thanit Yunnasinikasem declared that the Army seizure was illegitimate and that he would do what he can to resist it.

"The country has no rules any more. Anyone can do anything they please, but the red shirts will not accept this," he said.

He also promised that the pro-government movement would oppose the seizure both underground and openly.

If you don't want to incite violence make bloody well sure all sides are treated equally and the PDRC are dispersed also. Failure to do so will only enforce the thought that the army are just an arm of the PDRC.

Indeed, and so far it looks like they are doing just that . . . both protests disbanded and the Army won't allow them to gain a foothold here again. Good news.

I'm just preparing for the random acts of violence that will follow in the next few days/weeks by hardcore supporters.

" it is believed that the monk is under detention at the First Artillery Battalion Headquarters."

"PDRC secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban, who is being detained by the Army"

That sounds pretty equal, don't you think?

Well see. Let's wait until the first detained people are released, see who they are and then revisit that assumption.

Yes. Let's assume the red shirts are going to be detained longer ... until of course, they're not.

As I said, let's revisit your assumption at a later date - the coup is less than a day old.

My guess is that the ones who will released first will be those who are not seen as a threat to the nation ... that of course means that Jatuporn, Weng and Nattawut can look all forward to a lengthy stretch...!! Furthermore, judging by the announcement made by Thanit Yunnasinikasem in Chiang Mai, he will be joining them soon, providing they can grab him before he escapes over the border.

agreed but I hear Issara is an 'exception' and not detained

IF Army show fairness, without fear nor favour, it will all be accepted more calmly

Amazing how all this time the PTP claimed the Army was bias against them yet in the end both party leaders are in detention. Now if only the Army can capture those hardcore REDS who are hiding out in the North maybe the general population can be at ease. I am inclined to think the Army has been intercepting chats, messages, and calls from Thaksin for some time now and this coup is directly related to counter orders Thak had given the Reds. Thaks statement yesterday also shows he only cares about having amnesty for all his corrupt cohorts and doesnt care about the Thai people.

I would absolutely agree with your comment.

ummm.... They did...

"Gunshots heard on Aksa road as red shirts, PDRC told to go home"

they even provided buses for them as well.... who knows if all the buses made it back in 1 piece though.

Which it looks like it is. Mrs Yim was watching an interview with General P last night and was smiling saying he is 100% a yellow supporter.

I would hope that international pressure may see quick elections, but wont be holding my breath.

From the day that yingluck won the election this was always the end game.

Now we will have an Abbhisit clone in power soon and more feeding at the trough for the elites.

Of course this was the end game when a government governs the way PTP (Pardon Thaskin party) has done. I would say that you are sounding like a parrot when you comment as such (Now we will have an Abbhisit clone in power soon and more feeding at the trough for the elites.) I think a new game is about to emerge. By the way who's we?

"He also promised that the pro-government movement would oppose the seizure both underground and openly"... 'underground'? Are they crazy enough to shoot and bomb the military? These (the military) aren't some 'harmless' guards with sidearms. I sure hope his 'underground' means the 'non-violent' type.

I would think that is a no brainer since the general is pro democracy, similar to the yellow shirts, and that's the only way forward for this country which had has suffered too long from the reign of a family that doesn't know the meaning of the word democracy.

Not easy to keep up with all the 'news' and other nonsense here, but the OP had

"and it is believed that the monk is under detention at the First Artillery Battalion Headquarters."

I guess that red-shirt leader Thanit Yunnasinikasem doesn't know that under the Martial Law this self confession is not required to get the military to detain you for awhile.
