Papua New Guinea, anyone lived and worked there?

Featured Replies

I may have a chance to work in Papau New Guinea, not in the Mining or Oil & Gas sector.

Anyone willing to share their experience of living and working their?

I am keen to take the opportunity, but it would be wise to understand the positives and main negatives that one should consider, with a view to preparing accordingly the contract details with the employer.

Thanks

I've worked there some but not a lot in country. The countryside is amazing. Out of another time. Other than that malaria, tribal wars, one of the highest crime rates on the world. Port Moresby is supposed to be especially dangerous. Just be sure you understand what you are getting into.

I worked there 50 years ago. It was a potentially dangerous and violent place then and is a lot worse now.

Some great people. A terible government and a long existing tribal history including warfare between other groups and payback. Theoretically they had stopped eating people by then but there were still a couple of outbreaks of Kuru which would show it has not.

On the other hand it is the place where I probably had the best time in my life..but do not want to go back because I am sure I would lose those memories.

It's a total toilet.

Natives are violent and unfriendly.

Serious chance for foreigner of kidnapping and ransom.

My pals' company paid two armed guards (shotguns) to go around everywhere with him, when outside the accomodation area.

Most foreigners have to effectively live in armed and defended camps.

Don't go there unless the money is really good, and they pay your flights for somewhere else in your time off.

I went to primary and high school in PNG back in the day. I last worked there about 4 or 5 years ago. PNG is beautiful and the ppl you get to work with are no worse than anyone. Having said that there is a total lack of security there now, so most people who work there stay within their compounds, travel as a group and quite often travel with a security escort if travelling through areas known for robbery etc. most crime against expats relate to robbery with or without violence.

I've worked extensively in Asia (multiple country's), Africa (multiple country's) and PNG would sit near the bottom of the list for me personally.
