Farmers welcome junta’s prompt remedial action plan



The Thai Farmers and Agriculture Association welcomed the military junta head ordering the payment of money to farmers who are still not paid after selling rice under the Yingluck government's rice pledging scheme within three weeks.

Association president Wichian Halamjiak voiced strong support when Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha, head of the National Peace and Order Maintaining Council (NPOMC), Friday ordered the Finance Ministry to allocate a sum of around 80 billion baht to pay farmers within 15-20 days.

The junta head also advised that the money used would not be from money raised from the selling of rice as it was time consuming and not be in time for needy farmers who have to begin planting the new crop.

Mr Wichian said that he would like to suggest that the junta work out a practical measure to stabilise paddy rice price in the market which is now declining to 5,000-6,000 baht a ton, almost equivalent to the cost per rice which farmers have to spend in planting, thus risking heavy loss.

Besides the second crops are going to be harvested over the next 3-4 months, thus causing fear of oversupply of paddy this year.

If there is no measure to stabilise paddy price, price will fall further and farmers will expect more hardship.

In one stroke he manages to alleviate the plight of the farmers, as well as strongly undercut Thaksin's core constituency. By this first legislative act, Prayuth takes the wind out of the sails of much of Pheu Thai and the UDD. It also is but the latest indication that things are going to be moving very swiftly.

they aint got the money yet, good way of keeping them quite for a few weeks. The terrorists were voted in in 1 person 1 vote, and these same rice farmers will vote for them again given the chance, so several rice farmers tell me anyway.

Love to see the General stabilise the price of rice , Thai rice is no longer competitive and the world don't need it. Time stood still in the Thai paddy fields as that was how it was meant to be by the power that be, mean while other rice growing countries passed them by.

Get out your ten rai Paddy field and into another industry Khun Halamjiak because technology and competitiveness needs 500+ rai paddy fields.

Most Governments around the world have subsidy programs for farmers, but because it is done by a political party you oppose it must be bad. Oh my.

The money owed to farmers was a debt for the next government formed by whichever side of politics. The RTA is merely meeting obligations left by its incompetent and corrupt predecessors and in no way indicates corruption or influence peddling.

One can be assured that after the broken payment promises of the PTP this will be a refreshing change. One can be assured the General and the DRT (Democracy Restoration Team) will keep their promise and the farmers will have a reprise from the dark financial predicament the PTP unfairly placed them in when lying they had money to fund the scheme and then admit they didn't after they dissolved the house.

The DRT would be fully aware of these lies and I would take solace if they held the PTP accountable for lying and holding the majority in contempt…Yet again.

Well done DRT. The farmers will thank you. I thank you and 75% of the country thank you.

The one thing that is different is that the military can now take action against those that ripped off the system to return the money to the coffers. remember anyone arrested now goes to military court not to civilian where they can make all sorts of threats and excuses.

Prayuth realizes that the more he can do for the people the better it will be.

The pathetic one is you trying to make something out of this that it is not, and a very poor attempt to support your hero in Dubai.

The farmers have been owed their money for produce the government and therefor by extension the country bought from them.

They were not paid because of either incompetence or stupidity (take your pick) of the PT govt for not making provision for the payment before the house was dissolved.

It was simple really, the Govt knew there was X tons of rice pledged for Y baht so therefor they would have to pay the farmers Z baht.

They should have had Z baht ready to pay the farmers before the house was dissolved. They did not do this.

The General has taken over the running of the country and has made it a priority to pay the debt the country owed the farmers.

While we are at it, this is one of the reasons the economy has slumped so badly.

Billions of Baht have been withheld from the rural economy severely restricting the spending power of the farmers and all the downstream workers and suppliers who depend on the farmers.

Rural debt has risen to unprecedented levels because farmers and the others who depend on them have had to borrow to be able to keep on farming and in some cases just to stay alive and as we saw recently to send their kids to school.

This will not suddenly stop because the farmers are paid but will continue for some time, possibly years.

Havent your PT govt done a wonderful job of stuffing the country up.

Market forces, not this self appointed demi-god general will determine rice prices . Future stabilisation, by the junta, at a higher than market level, means subsidy from somewhere. Great that those owing monies may finally get paid, but what of their future ? I am not at all motivated by politics, I condemn Thaksin and all corrupt officialdom of any persuasion. However, I wince at every post that proclaims the new PM General as the ultimate saviour. How much do we really know of this man's motivation, intention or, perhaps, manipulation?
