Hi all,

I'm thinking of getting a septoplasty done at Yoskarn. I have some questions as I want to get all the unknowns out of the way as far ahead in advance as possible.

Like can I stay at the Aphrodite Inn for a week or two while I recover or is it recommended I stay at a proper hotel? And I heard it's not uncommon to get discounts for getting multiple procedures at once, is that correct?

I have some other questions, would love to speak with anyone who's had procedures done with Dr Somyos.

:)

I can tell you that I had it done in the states and the recovery was minimal. I think he broke the deviated septum and also increased the opening into my sinuses.

After the surgery they kept me in recovery only long enough to assure I was OK (2 -4 hours?) and then a friend drove me home. I never had any serious pain.

I was uncomfortable as heck only because there were splints and gauze in my nose and couldn't breath through my nose at all for about 3 weeks. At that point the doctor removed all of that and the results were wonderful. I've never had any "stuffed up" nose or sinus issues since where before I had them all the time.

I was at home the same day, and driving the next after the meds wore off. I don't know if your "multiple procedures" will make your recovery worse.

Good luck.

PS I had general anesthesia which put me clear out and that's the reason I had to stay in recovery for a while. Otherwise it was considered outpatient surgery because I never spent a night in the hospital.

Hummmmm....

You pose a most interesting question.

When you say 'unknowns' ... do you refer to the 'known unknowns' ... or the 'unknown unknowns'?

Can you stay at the 'Aphrodite Inn' ... the answer is most likely yes. Maybe, even if you don't have the septoplasty, you can stay there, though there seems to be little geographical relevance to the location of either facility.

'for a week or two' ... stay as long as you like ... thumbsup.gif

But me thinks that you are overplaying this ...

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER SEPTOPLASTY SURGERY
1. General Information
You and your physician have decided that you would benefit from a Septoplasty.
Septoplasty is an outpatient surgical procedure.
This procedure is done through the nose with no external incisions or cutting.
The goal of this procedure is to surgically correct a nasal deviation.
This will enhance your nasal breathing.
2. Nasal Drainage
Right after surgery, you will have drainage from your nose. There may be a small amount of bright red bleeding, but do not be alarmed.
A small amount is normal and may continue through the week.
A gauze dressing will be placed on your upperlip to absorb this drainage.
On the day of surgery it may be necessary to change the dressing several times.
If bleeding does occur, place an ice pack over the nose.
At the same time place an ice cube in your mouth; let it melt.
Any bright red bleeding that lasts more than ten minutes, or id heavy, should be reported to your
doctor immediately. Old blood, which accumulated during surgery, is dark reddish-brown.
It will drain for a week or more.
It is of no concern.

I'm not sure about all of this draining, ice packs, etc. My splints were round plastic disks that he rolled into a cigarette shape, placed in the nose and then they naturally sprung open to apply pressure. One on each side.

The gauze was first something with a string on it that was placed into my sinuses and removed by pulling the strings. (THAT tickles to the extent of feeling like a shock when removed) Not too bad.

Then there was cotton manufactured to look like a cigarette that was pushed inside the rolled splints and left the whole time. I never had any bleeding and I think that's due to the pressure from the gauze, cotton and splints.

It was really pretty uneventful. Oh, my eyes were slightly blackened but that cleared up by the time he pulled the splints and packing.

I had surgery to stop snoring at Yoksarn clinic about 7 or so years ago. The Dr was professional and spoke very good english. The surgery was done under local upstairs and uneventful.

I had to return a week later to repair stitches due to my overconfidence that caused a couple to tear. This 2nd treatment was done for free. He did say during my initial consultation that his price included any additional treatment if required.

The only criticism if you could call it that was the strengh of painkillers he prescribed at the time. I found they weren't strong enough but managed to obtain stronger ones from a nearby pharmacy. After mentioning this before my 2nd treatment he gave me stronger painkillers.

I was on a 30 day visa exempt entry at the time and he offered to organise a medical certificate to allow a visa extension while I recovered.

I'm really hoping for a no-gauze option, which I hear exists. I hear pulling it out is a nightmare.

Did you go with Dr. Somyos? I have other questions I'd like to ask privately...

Thanks for that. My procedures will be different, but it is nice to have another positive review.

I'm also concerned about price...they are expensive!

Do NOT have this or any other surgery entailing general anesthesia in a clinic, only in a hospital;. If you want this particular doctor he likely has privileges at one or more of the private hospitals.

This particular clinic's prices run higher than the top end hospitals in many instances so will likely not cost you more to have it done at a hospital, and will certainly be safer should anything go wrong.

I'm actually considering Yanhee hospital now. Can I get recommendations for particular doctors there? I hear some are better than others. If I can afford Bumrungrad, I may go there and would appreciate recommendations there too. :)

Friend of mine had upper & lower eyelid surgery. Surgery was not successful & necessitated corrective surgery. Nasal surgery is much more complicated. Choose Bumrungrad if you can afford it. Cheers,..

Thank you for letting me know. Is Bumrungrad more expensive than Yoskarn? I hope not! :(

Choose the surgeon, not the hospital.

sometimes the simplest advice is the best.

You both seem knowledgeable on this issue. I look forward to your recommendations on which doctors at which hospitals I should see.

At Yanhee there is only one ENT- Dr. Ornouma Sriwanishvipat. Board certified in head & neck surgery; I have no experience with her, first or second hand.

At Bumrungrad, this doctor seems to have exceptional qualifications http://www.bumrungrad.com/doctors/Prayuth-Tunsuriyawong

Harvard-trained and holds a faculty position at a major medical school

Thanks. I would prefer actual testimonials, but I've asked my contacts at the hospitals about them. It appears Dr. Suthat at Yanhee also does septoplasty but is not an ENT.
