I like the idea of a challenge, or a series of them, and announcing them well in advance gives everyone a chancce to go and prepare

I was also wondering whether it might be worth considering technical merit / composure / use of light (as opposed to the more general threads etans / street views / trees / etc) that we all enjoy posting in, though having suggested this, I realise I have just ruled myself out of ever posting!

As for the size of the photo, there are already posting guidelines (by Tywais) pinned for us to refer to. I think these might answer rhythworx's point.

For those who may not have been a member for long we used to have photo Challenges which is similar to what we are doing here but focused. Some examples of past challenges and note each normally has a set of rules/guidelines and a voting mechanism via the gallery. However with the gallery gone the likes will have to be the voting mechanism. If this gets off maybe I can whisper in George's ear to send the new comps out in a News Letter to publicize it, otherwise as mentioned, we have a limited number of regular contributors and maybe draw in a new crowd.

Seems this idea has been around before... and died a fast death .... looking at a few of the post in there.... I read stuff like this....

"Invalid post, see challenge rules" that seemed to be repeated a number of times....

I have better things to do than read that sort of thing... or reading replies with just numbers adding up the "likes"

If too complicated I would suggest it won't last long, again .... we don't need knit picking people to tell any of us, it's "invalid" for some reason.... either it's a good image or it's not.... and "beauty" is in the eye of the beholder....

I will go further to say, that perhaps a month is too many photos to go through.... ??? Perhaps picks of the week?

As I said before lets keep this simple and fun... and not be overly serious about this ....

As for coming up with "themes" I really don't think that is necessary .... a good picture is a good picture regardless of theme...I think we are all grown up enough to know that....

OK that's my two cents worth!

I personally think that this " Friendly competition " will start to be the demise of the good feelings I personally have being a general poster .

I can assimilate with many of the views and suggestions put forward , and I also think that this a good idea , though with constraints.

I would consider that even though we are adults , we all have personal views , and we all have Egos.

Being a poster on TVF gives me the opportunity to co-relate to other like-minded folk , though I do consider that I may have unintentionally ruffled some feathers even through the slightest misdemeanour, that being of ( prior posts / posted words / poor quality images / misguided representations etc etc )

Heck some of the people that view this thread and other sub-forums even take a dislike to your DP . Judgement comes at someone's price .

What I am trying to express is that I wish to be part of a community with good humour and good empathy , I believe I have found this here !

Competitions are good for personal EGO , and ok good for self betterment as well , but we have to consider that it is only good if you are not prepared to feel a loss , because someone will ultimately lose .

Hey , I am just a hacker , but... without the help of all those that post here , and personal help as well , I would not have developed a better image from whence I first posted , I am so very grateful for all your help.

This also comes from viewing the " Top shelf " as well and trying to replicate via post production and skill learning . Lurking about and trying to gain valuable information from those that inspire.

This, I am trying to say is not " Heart on my sleeve " , though maybe that is my personality .

I feel inspired from all who post , I read the photo for quality , for the story , for empathy , for awe factor , and for what I believe has the photographers ideal in the initial capture .

What I see is individual to what you see .

My apologies if you think I am of on a different tangent , but I believe this is relevant to the foundation we have now .

I think Jimmy had a good point about making it a weekly contest. A month is a long time to submit just 1 photo. It's also less waiting for the next contest if someone cant find an Etan or a beach (if it was themed).

Maybe 1 week to enter and the following week for votes as the next contest is rolled out?

I don't think my intention was we "submit a particular photo" ... to one place... just post as normal to the various threads... I think we as a group can still pick out outstanding photos.... each one of us has them sometimes! ... what we would like to think is a million $ shot... (don't we wish!) There are no prizes here....

That's why I thought once a week.... would not be too hard to go through....

I think without picking out anyone in particular, there have been some better than average photos, even this week from everyone ......

Jimmy,I know that a month sounds like a long time to wait,but I was also thinking about Tywais.He has a full on job with his moderating and personal work as it is.If this Gallery idea

takes off (as I hope it will) and we get quite a few people entering with their Best photos then it could turn out to be a lot of extra work transferring photos into the gallery monthly.

If it is done weekly then it might be just too much too ask,plus do we all have that many really top notch photos and how quick would our personal quota of likes run out?

phuketrichard.I agree with you (and Jimmy) that the photos should be past and present.It was the old photos that actually gave me the idea of suggesting the gallery in the first place.

Many time I will go back and look through the older topics and quite often come across awesome photos that are hidden away in old threads.That's how I came up with the idea of the

gallery.If all the top photos were in one place,wouldn't that make a wonderful place to spend some time and get lost in for a while?

Myself along with a few others on here are just starting out with photography.We have the passion but are still gathering our skills and techniques.On this forum we are lucky enough

to have some professional photographers.I am not going to list names because you know who they are anyway (check the subforums),most of the time they stay up in the loft of the

forum and discuss photographical stuff (< my new word).

My idea is (if they are willing to help) to add another subforum with two categories.

One topic for photos that did make the grade and make it into the gallery.In the members could maybe talk about their image and how they achieved it.

Maybe a no goer,but could be advantageous to guys like me just starting off on the photography learning curve.

The second topic would be used for photos that didn't quite make it but could of done with a little bit of post editing.Maybe with the help from the Pro's

Mine and other members photos could be even better.Any help would be appreciated.As I said before in this thread,constructive criticism is never a bad thing.

My feelings would be that this would also get us sharing ideas as a photo community......just My thoughts.

What started out with good intentions soon turned into a competition , I really do not think that this was the intention of shaggy1969 ,

I believe what he intended was to showcase the fantastic images that we all post

I think that we all want to display that we have a " Show worthy image " .

Some of us have the ability and resource to enable this , and some of us have " Heart " .

The factor that gives us the confidence to post amongst others with outstanding images / photos .

We post these images because we want to show our life to you ! To the viewer .

We want for you to view what we see , this is not National Geographic .

Maybe I am speaking alone , but I have a voice .

Maybe other posters feel the same as I do , but don't want to voice their thoughts , maybe others don't care about what someone else thinks.

I say good for them !

Sorry for my input on this forum, as most of what I read in these would/so called rules, prompted me to open MY own thread which was not a debate, not a challenge, but MY very own best shots in other challenges that I took part in after leaving ThaiVisaDotCom challenges as there were non.

Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

Maybe, one should not have titled it Best Shots #2, however, to post a title like "My Best Challenge Shots" would for me be a bit too much, don't you think.

Please keep it as an open talk about future challenges as I have been there and done them as a Mod

Can I suggest that we work on this great idea of Shaggy's and give it a bit more time and thought. I agree we could really enjoy showcasing the best of the best, from which some of us I can learn a lot.

Let's take a step back and look for the main elements of what has been proposed. We can win! And talking of Kan Win, I mean no disrespect to your thread, but could we all work together and not divide or duplicate our efforts?

BTW, I like your post...maybe you should have called it Kan Win's Winning Cam......

How to go about that is not that easy.... opening a new link to view an image I don't think will work....

My feelings were that going through a month's worth of photos would be far to tedious, that is why I suggested a weekly go through .... even that could be a bit much!

I also suggested to Shaggy via PM that the Mods not really be involved with this, ...... they are busy enough... particularly at the moment with the curfew stuff.. I personally think we could do this amongst ourselves.... it in my opinion and not wanting to speak for Shaggy or others this is not really competition.... just a showcase of what we as a group, think are some of the outstanding photos....

Also, to perhaps get new "faces" involved in the forum ..... it's always nice to see a few new people and their photos ..... and to help up our own standards....

Let's see what evolves before killing the idea, or see if someone can come up with an idea how to go about this, that is easy for everyone to follow !

How you interpreted it is not how I meant it to be read.

My idea was this........

Every member has the opportunity to post one photo at the beginning of the month from their own collection.

During that month other members get the chance to vote on other members photos.

At the end of every month the ones with a score of 10 or more will be moved into the Gallery.

All entries (photos and comments) from the previous month would be deleted.Giving way to the on coming months entries.

If as in my original plan we transfer the photos into a gallery then we do indeed need the help of the Mods.Last night I even sent

Tywais a Pm asking if Kan Win still had those powers but I haven't had a reply back from him yet.

But that was before I saw the Colonels new thread

(catchy title BTW Kan,wish I had thought of that one )

If it is only to show our best photos then Kan Win has already got one up and ready......That is why I asked for this one to be closed.
