I remember chatting with a guy who I had the misfortune to work with..He had been in Thailand for years and years. I mentioned that at the weekend I was going to Khaosan Road. He looked at me in disdain and said "Khaosaon Road? It's just full of backpackers"

Well, Scott, I think we are losing the battle. I tried making scumbags aware of their disrespect a while back but the scum still interfere in conversations on these forums like a rampant disease ready to inflict everyone with their poisonous remarks. I think the moderators have cottoned on and are slowly trying to do something but freedom of speech allows these bast**ds to say what they want even though it may be hurtful and slandering. As far as I can gather some Scottish geyser started a nonsense trolling thread which encouraged enraged responses from other geysers (not jocks) who, this morning, clearly had less Chang than the Scottish geyser who kicked it all off. The Scottish geyser has now got his second wind, and, whilst the chang-ers from the morning session are sleeping it off, is now bringing a hint of Scottish political debate to the trough, ready for when the English, Welsh, Irish and Cornish geysers all wake up. There again I could be completely wrong, the Scottish geyser who started it all off could just be lonely and is merely seeking attention; I am sure that he'll find someone to listen to him later during the evening session. Word of advice, please state clearly your preference for Rangers or Celtic and Jock laddie make sure it's before 10pm, och aye the noo!

I agree, they're like ants all over the place biting and tearing everything apart in their path. Its a shame to think that these people are supposedly the same us however, they've become alienated within what seems to them some 'secret society' that stick together like sludge. Even though this post was just to gain some respect for each and every individual it looks like there is too many back biters who don't have a brain cell amongst them.

Well the OP is just not doing a particularly good job of making his point, but there is a point there. Then again, the other side has a pretty good point too.

Post count and time spent as an expat isn't all that important in terms of knowledge or ability to adapt or learn, nor is it any kind of measure of one's insight into the workings of the adopted country: it's merely a measure of postings and time spent.

A couple of real life examples....

Long term expat with experience of living in various countries, well full of himself, but exploded upon an incidental confrontation with the fact he didn't even know a basic thing about his wife's country, something easily known. He's been with this woman for years yet didn't realize that (many) Taiwanese people, as well as speaking Mandarin, also speak Hokkien. He erupted like a baby, or maybe like an Asian having lost face. This was a pompous, pretentious fool who assumed because he can claim to have been around a while everyone should treat him with the utmost respect and be dangling on his every word.

It's not that his time as an expat is of no significance, it's the fact he was unable to face his own mediocrity so he lashed out.

Another one was the guy claiming to have been here for 13 years. We were in a bar in Minburi and this kid came in selling nuts. The kid clearly had some kind of learning disability as well. The dude told the kid no thanks to the offer of some nuts but the kid didn't seem to grasp his moment for a sale was gone. Next thing this guy raises his voice and terrifies the poor sod: "Oi, Pee.... NO!"

Hang on a sec.... So he's been in Thailand 13 years and ain't grasped the pee/nong systems yet, and yet this was another one who had a tendency to think he's an authority, or to want to teach all and sundry to suck eggs just because he's been around (too long).

Further back in the topic someone said they don't tend to mention how long they've been in Thailand, instead merely saying how many times they have visited. I think this is a much wiser attitude because sometimes it really does seem like the longer someone claims they have been in Thailand the less they actually know or the more obnoxious they become.

Of course there are plenty of bad apples on either side of any given line, just like hypocrites calling people out for calling people out and being superior to those who are superior.

Someone else said this topic is a game, but it's also like a dance and both parties are fully engaged, much like two pooves in a boutique (Douglas Adams RIP).

Invariably it predisposes one’s basic understanding of why we even bother to try to get any intelligent answers to what seems to me a pretty informative blog which nobody as yet seems to have grasped the main reason for me questioning peoples in depth values towards others, thus for these entities who submit different topics. The difference is however the last visit was 17 years ago (all entry & exits on re-entries since then) and am still here. Not really worth mentioning details like that though...............

OP, what is the (your) benchmark to define your different classes of expat? I am honestly interested in knowing.

Unfortunately, there is no set definition. There those who care and those who don’t give a toss. I for one love having a blether and pint with expats unless they start rabbiting on about how cheap life is in Asia and like that. It’s also sickening when they seem to enforce there superiority about who they know and could call in a flash if there was a sign of trouble. All this is just a facade to try to gain your undying respect for these over the top egotists.

Live and let live is my motto.

Please understand, I’m not inferring everyone is the same. I’ve met and befriended many great guys in Thailand and we have some brilliant laughs and to me – that’s what life is all about – being Happy!!!

Thirdly, it was somewhat amusing at the start to read responses that were complete rubbish in regards to the OP, however it quickly turned into disgust. This must be due to the ever increasing 'I can't be bothered to read the whole post before responding' child's mentality that has become so common place here. In fact, some of you have publicly broadcast that in your responses to other thread as if it were glorified when, in fact, it should be vilified.

In closing, I would like to point out to you all that the number of TV posts you have, how many years you've been a TV member, how many trips you've taken to LOS, how many years you've lived in LOS, how many years you've been happily (or dysfunctionally) married, how many bar girls you've had sex with, etc, etc, ultimately add up to nothing of any value to anyone other than yourself, yet you seem to constantly throw these numbers around as if they add credibility to your own opinion. And let us be clear that your opinion is of no more or less value than anyone else's. What you and your ilk may fail to realize is that you have taken on the helms of a forum which was meant to share information, to pass constructive advice, to better the community, yet in the end this forum will die with you as you continue to alienate new members. In closing, I would like to point out to you all that the number of TV posts you have, how many years you've been a TV member, how many trips you've taken to LOS, how many years you've lived in LOS, how many years you've been happily (or dysfunctionally) married, how many bar girls you've had sex with, etc, etc, ultimately add up to nothing of any value to anyone other than yourself, yet you seem to constantly throw these numbers around as if they add credibility to your own opinion. And let us be clear that your opinion is of no more or less value than anyone else's. What you and your ilk may fail to realize is that you have taken on the helms of a forum which was meant to share information, to pass constructive advice, to better the community, yet in the end this forum will die with you as you continue to alienate new members. That is your legacy - the failure to pass this information for all future generations who may follow in your footsteps.

You’ve made my OP more worthwhile helping me retain my faith in humanity. We think so much alike, in view of what you’ve written. Incidentally I’m not some do-gooder, more so was trying to secure fair play for all. Constantly, trying my utmost to get a message across as best as I could, however was consistently ambushed and determinedly plagued by retards at every obstacle. Them, trying their utmost to shoot me down with bizarre unrelated verbiage to my OP.

It’s truly amazing, if one was to actually have some Psychoanalysis theories and associated techniques projected throughout this OP from start to finish on virtually ‘all of what you’ve cleverly stated in your reply’ then was somehow taken onboard. We would therefore all make the ultimate decision, that making any worthwhile posts, are indirectly ruined by others down to immaturity, bullying and gross misconduct with the Lunatics running the Asylum. Thaivisa is to me the Crème De La Crème of forums but then again, the persistence of these imbeciles just wastes one’s time and energy with insults, abuse, defamation and idle threats.

One thing I will say in the Moderators defense. I wholly suspect they’ve actually seen the common sense that’s been portrayed in this post otherwise’ they too would have beleaguered me with constant innuendo, thus to stop me in my tracks for being so defiant to reach my goal. For this I take my hat off to them.

I don’t give in so easily being a Scottish person and felt pretty let-down at the beginning until I gained support from others and had a boost of inspiration when I recited your wonderful Post.

Well I have never yet met a sane Scotsman or a sober Irishman. I'd have more chance of finding a Leprechaun. An expat is someone whom does not reside in his home country, receives no income or support from his home country but maintains his nationality of his birth, So people living off their pensions in Thailand are not expats they are retirees. Someone on a Tourist Visa is a tourist, doesn't matter if they've been here a billion years. Someone working whilst on a Tourist Visa is breaking the law.

I am racist I reserve the right to like whichever races I choose to like and even individual people from races I don't like. I'm sexist too. First and foremost, I would like to thank TV for allowing me to read the nonsensical garbage that is posted here on a daily basis without the requirement of logging in.

Secondly, I hope to see the majority of you burning in hell for making me fish out my login information for the sole purpose of responding to the idiocy that this topic has garnished. I would also like to add a special caveat: 'die, die in a fire'.

Thirdly, it was somewhat amusing at the start to read responses that were complete rubbish in regards to the OP, however it quickly turned into disgust. This must be due to the ever increasing 'I can't be bothered to read the whole post before responding' child's mentality that has become so common place here. In fact, some of you have publicly broadcast that in your responses to other thread as if it were glorified when, in fact, it should be vilified.

I always have enjoyed a good banter so Here is my 2 cents worth Firstly ATF has the right to do think and whatever pleases him but when defining a name or term get your facts straight please. An expatriate (expat or sometimes ex-pat) is a person temporarily or permanently residing in another country and culture other than their own. Now for any others You also have the to think and do as you please if it makes you happy . I may not agree with your opinion or belief but that is my right. In the end we all own that right, and must answer for our actions no matter how informed or misinformed we maybe.In closing to all be safe life is to short to waste.
