BANGKOK: -- A vintage aerial bomb discovered yesterday at a site near Bang Sue train station marked for construction of a Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) train station was secured by the Air Force.

Air Force bomb disposal personnel said the 200-plus kilogram bomb, was probably dropped during World War II and may have been the same sort that exploded in April at a scrap-metal shop in Lat Pla Khao in Bangkok after workers tried to blowtorch it open.

The 12 by 46-inch bomb had been ruptured by a backhoe while it was digging up an area near the MRT project site.

The RAF Bristol Blenheim bomber had a bomb load up to 450 kg, so the bomb in question may have come from one of the RAF raids early in the war.

However there were many later raids by the USAAF and RAF later in the war - and as can be seen from this extract fro Wikipedia some on the bombing was not too accurate:

After Rangoon fell to the Japanese on March 7, heavy bombers, such as RAF and American B-24s, based in India and China, attacked Thailand.^[5][6] The raids were carried out because Bangkok by then was a command centre for the Japanese on the South East Asian front.

The bombers targeted installations useful to the occupying Japanese military, but the raids were also intended to pressure the government of Thai military strongman Plaek Pibulsongkram to abandon his unpopular alliance with Imperial Japan. The major targets were the newly completed Port of Bangkok and the Thai railway system. Raids by RAF, USAAF, and other Allied air forces continued with growing intensity from India and, after the liberation of Rangoon on May 3, 1945, from Rangoon up until the end of the war in August that year.

On 5th June 1944 98 USAAF B-29s set out to attack the Makassan railway yards in Bangkok. Only 77 made it, the remainder returning to base withy engine problems. Arriving at the Thai capital at about 11:00 am, the bombers found the target obscured by bad weather which in turn caused an element of confusion in the attack. Only 18 bombs hit their intended targets. The others destroyed a Japanese military hospital and damaged the Japanese secret police headquarters. On the return leg, 42 B-29s had to divert to other airfields because of a lack of fuel and five crashed on landing, although none were lost to enemy fire. Further raids were carried out by the B-29s against strategic targets in Bangkok.^[9

Thai style. The name change to Thailand in 1939 allowed "Thailand" to declare war, but the name was not recognized, so they later changed the name to Thailand, again, in 1948, so... neither Siam or Thailand did anything in WWII.

On July 20th, 1948, the Siamese constituent assembly voted to change the name of Siam to Thailand, the change to come into effect the following year. Muang Thai or Thailand means ‘land of the free’ and the name had been changed before, in 1939 under the fascist military dictatorship of Field Marshal Luang Phibunsongkhram, but the anti-Axis powers refused to recognise the new name after Siam allied herself with the Japanese and in 1942 declared war on the United States and the United Kingdom.

I cannot imagine for one second that they allied themselves to those NASTY Japanese! and allowed them free passage into northern Malaya and Burma

True it officially changed names on 11 May 1949, although the name had been changed before, in 1939 under the military dictatorship of Field Marshal Luang Phibunsongkhram but Western countries refused to recognise it.

Thailand essentially "capitulated" to the Japanese under Field Marshall Phibul, establishing a wartime occupation relationship with Japan somewhat akin to the Vichy State in France.

Thais will never say that they've never been "invaded." The past 500 years of Southeast Asian history is all about the Thai, Khmer, Burmese and Lao kingdoms overrunning each other and sacking conquered cities.

What Thailand can claim is that unlike the vast majority of developing countries - and every one of their neighbors - Thailand was never colonized by a European power.
