UNICEF unveils massive aid programme for troubled Rakhine

The United Nations Children's Fund will provide US$12 million in a new aid programme for children in Rakhine State for the next two years.

The aid programme will include healthcare and education for children in the country’s second-poorest state.

A ceremony was held on June 4 in Sittwe, the capital of Rakhine to introduce the state-level processes under the programme.

“This whole project is not an emergency one. It's now under way. But we don’t know exactly how many children are in need in Rakhine. We will work together with the Rakhine government in some sectors,” said Bertrand Bainvel, Unicef’s representative in Myanmar.

He said the education programme would cover seven townships. “We will carry out juvenile protection projects in three townships. We still don’t have set the exact towns," he said.

When asked which groups were most vulnerable to malnutrition, he replied that Unicef had not collected data, but said many children suffered malnutrition in the state.

Only 12 percent of children were born in health departments, hospitals and clinics, and just 30 percent attend primary schools in Rakhine, according to figures released recently by Unicef.

The new programme follows protests in the state by ethnic Rakhine groups who claimed that international aid groups had been biased towards the state’s Muslim minority.
