Maintenance work of Myawady-Mae Sot Friendship Bridge completed

The maintenance of Myawady-Mae Sot Friendship Bridge at the Thai-Myanmar borders was completed yesterday under the budget of Bt40 million (approximately Ks 1.18 billion), according to the Thai contractor, See Sang Karn Yotah (1979) Co Ltd.

The completion was one month earlier than schedule.

The company started the maintenance works since January 2013, focusing on strengthening the foundation of the bridge.

The maintenance is part of a construction contract, to build the Myawady-Kawkareik second trade route to link the country and Thailand.

Aside from the bridge repair, See Sang Karn Yotah will have to repair Myawady-Thingan Nyi Naung Road and build a new road from Thingan Nyi Naung to Kawkareik.

The 16-year-old friendship bridge is deemed essential for bilateral trade. Trade was not affected during the period when the bridge was being repaired.

Upon the completion, fully-loaded cargo trucks will be able to use the bridge again.

Another road is being considered over the Thaungyin River (Moei River), if a special economic zone is established in Mae Sot, Thailand.
