Police detect betting activities on first day of World Cup

BANGKOK, 13 June 2014 (NNT) – The Royal Thai Police reported on betting activities in Bangkok and other provinces on the first day of the FIFA World Cup tournament which kicked off in Brazil last night.

Deputy National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Ake Angsananont said that a number of arrests have been made yesterday against those who were involved in football gambling, both online and offline.

Police have earlier established an operations center to crackdown on gambling activities ahead of the tournament. The center is set to focus on preventing children and students from participating in football betting by assigning officers to patrol entertainment venues and restaurants that broadcast World Cup matches.

The Royal Thai Police is working in collaboration with the Information and Communication Technology Ministry to track and curb betting activities online.

An anti-gambling 1599 hotline has been set up to allow members of the public to report on gambling nationwide. All relevant agencies have also been urged to relay information on such activities.

They will be focusing on preventing children and students from participating in football betting.

Noble task, but what about the rest of the Thai society that just loves to gamble

They are probably running a few pools themselves but I suspect none will be dialing the hotline to turn themselves in.

Coming from Oz where gambling is away of life, interfering in the enjoyment of others , don't sit to well with me, you only live once , but in Thailand, you might only live a short while, if you don't pay your football bets.bah.gif

BANGKOK, June 13 -- The Royal Thai police said that football gambling has already been reported in Bangkok and other provinces, even as the first match of the World Cup 2014 between Brazil and Croatia kicked off.

Royal Thai Police deputy commissioner Pol Gen Ake Angsananond said 58 suspects have been arrested in Bangkok and other major cities, for football gambling yesterday, following the first match of the World Cup 2014.

O the total, he said, 33 were found in areas under the supervision of the Metropolitan Police Bureau.

Pol Ake said police would now beef up measures against football gambling, by inspecting entertainment venues and restaurants providing free viewing of football matches to certify there are no activities that stimulate gambling, while also closely monitoring online football gambling websites for further movement.

The authorities have now shut down 391 websites believed to have been instigating football gambling, said the deputy commissioner, adding that the police would also add the charges of money laundering to the webmasters of the sites to ensure stronger punishments.

Meanwhile, the World Cup 2014 fever in Thailand is at high pitch, and the Phuket Post Office has redecorated its office to welcome the World Cup season and has started sellng 2 million postcards for the public to guess the winner of this year's World Cup and a chance to win Bt40 million. One of the first clues was that they found it difficult to sit on a fat wallet.

I'd gamble that they stumbled into a betting den in their own coffee bar and after realizing they were too late to place a bet started kicking off!

There's an easy solution to this. Legalize gambling.

Yes, and allow civil prosecutions by those who could not afford to bet to sue the "bookies" when they lose everything. clap2.gif
