Caution - Dont Get Arrested At Airports

8 This can happen
any where....

MUST READ....
BE CAREFUL
WHILE TRAVELING OVERSEAS....

An Indian was detained
in Bangkok for stealing
a box of cigarettes
in a duty-free shop
in Bangkok International Airport...
He had paid for chocolates and a
carton of cigarettes...
The cashier put a packet of cigarettes extra
into his bag and
he thought it was a free pack.
He was arrested for shop-lifting and
the Thai Police extortion price was 30,000 Baht for his release.
He spent two nights in jail and paid 500 Baht for an air-conditioned cell,
200-300 baht for each visitor and 11,000 baht for his final release.
The Police shared the money in front of his eyes.
On top of that,
he was charged in court and fined 2,000 baht by the magistrate and handcuffed and escorted to his plane.
His passport was stamped "Thief".
While there, his relatives requested help from the Indian Embassy and was told that they are helpless,
many Asians are victimized similarly daily
and letters and phone-calls
to the Thai authorities are ignored.
He shared a cell with a Singaporean
the first night
who paid 60,000 baht for his release.
The second night was a Malaysian national who paid 70,000 baht.

Mind you this was not in a shanty shop in downtown Bangkok
but ...
in a duty free shop
at the Bangkok Int'l Airport .
BE WARNED....
The above is 100% correct information
because Mr.<SNIP> customer from India
faced exactly the same scenario mentioned above
when he was in transit at Bangkok Int'l Airport coming to Taipei...
Someone who went through the same ordeal in Dubai .
He bought stuff at the Duty Free upon entering.
The girl at Duty Free
put a bottle of cologne in his shopping bag
(he did not even see it happen).
He was arrested for stealing (this is before he even picked up his luggage).
He sat at the airport jail where he was harassed for the whole day.
NO FOOD, NO WATER
for one day and
only after he paid a fine (bribe of US 500...).
That is all the cash he had in his pocket at the time.
They let him go.
These are scams that are happening all over the place.
Please BE CAREFUL!
All of this is pre-planned and the people who work at the airport know who to target.
Unbelievable but apply caution....
the duty free employees intentionally put extra items to scam the passengers.....

ALWAYS TAKE A RECEIPT FOR ANY FREE GIFT THAT THE DUTY FREE SHOP GIVES.
PLEASE BE CAREFUL
AND WATCHFUL
WHEN YOU ARE BEING BILLED
AND ITEMS PACKED IN INTERNATIONAL AIR PORTS
(DUTY FREE SHOPS).

Not that I doubt this type of thing goes on, but posting without a verifiable source is a waste of writing time. The one a year or so ago, where two Australians got screwed, at least included a news article link.

If you have such a link, please post it.

I appreciate your feedback. But i just came to know this goes on at airport. I travel a lot to Thailand. Shop a lot aswell at the airport. I am sure there are others like me who need to be made aware of this. So I am sorry you had to go through old news. But this heads up is meant for people like me (The less informed types) and not for the well informed likes ;)

I agree. Keep posting as a reminder to keep your guard up. There are many stories about the scams at the Duty Free area at BKK airport. You also have to be careful about the lines dividing shops, cross the line and you've left the shop carrying goods away then your shoplifting as well. Unfortunately most of the people that get caught out are new to Thailand and think that airports are safe.

There have been a few reports in the past, this one adds to it even it they do seem a little dramatic.

For those of use who've been in Thailand a while, who've never been targeted in such a manner or have friends relay such encounters first hand its a little hard to believe these things go on. However, there have been enough reports not to discount these threads and to pay attention.

There is nothing wrong with heeding this warning and paying a little extra attention....

A bit of internet bravado from the comfort of my chair:

I would love something like this to happen to me, I'd get everyone I know involved and see the people involved with scams such as this facing charges, jail time and anything else those I know may be able to throw at them...

However, in reality I'd just pull in a few contacts, be on my way quietly and leave them to sort it out.

It's been going on for years at the main airport. I stay the hell out of the duty free shops. They are not good deals anyway.

I only go in to buy a friend a box of Drum tobacco. Box of 5 packs for 500 baht big saving compared to UK prices. Am extremely careful check the receipt and don't wander around with the pack. Usually someone approaches if you just stand there holding what you want.

Duty free shopping is quite often more expensive than shopping tax-paid in any city of your choice, with the exception of some cheaper booze and fags. Duty free shops globally hike the prices and then show the discounts tricking the buyers into believing they are getting a bargain.

I never shop in an airport!

It is old news. I just provided you with a five year old news report from the BBC facepalm.gif

Although these incidents seemed to have stopped in the last couple of years after a spate of such cases being widely reported in the press about 5yrs ago, it is good to keep reminding as the racket may start again.
