A New Fortuner Petrol Vs Nearly New Diesel For The Same Price

I can either buy a brand new Fortuner 2.7 petrol for just over a million Baht or a nearly new, 3.0 (farang owned , 4K on the clock) 2005 Diesel, for virtually the same money.

I have always wanted to buy the diesel version, but these new petrol jobs are a good price.

It's always nice to have a brand new motor, but the novelty soon wears off.

So apart form the obvious differences of fuel consumption (10L/km vs 8.5L/km -is that right?), and that the likely resale value of the deisel would be higher, are there any other considerations, and which one would you go for?

Any comments appreciated, as it's decision time. Thanks

If the car is in good nick, I'd plump for the diesel....assuming it's the 3 litre turbo.

It might be worth bearing in mind that the diesel should last longer and be more reliable, and diesel is likely to cost a little less per litre than gas /petrol in the foreseeable future.

I have a 2005 Fortuner Diesel (automatic). 10.5k per liter.

Diesel = less problems, will last MUCH longer, I've heard resale value is higher, don't have to worry about gas companies/government screwing with the fuel (diesel will always be sold).

Having said all that.......if the diesel wasn't so quiet in the Fortuner I would not have bought it. I would not own a diesel vehicle that is loud. The Fortuner is quiet; I listen to the stereo at low levels with no problem.

4k on the clock is nothing......my father-in-law has over 700,000k on his Toyota diesel. Remember a car is only new for a day. :o

Thanks everyone.

I have decided to go for the Diesel - its 200k off the list price with only 4k on the clock -1 farang owner, being transferred to another country.

I bought my Escape in similar circumstances 2 years ago and have had 60k of happy motoring. Now I need something a bit bigger and quieter.

And I don't have the Thai obsession of showing off my red number plates for a month :o

i'm not sure if LPG installations would void the warranty on a new car... In general running on LPG is about 60% cheaper then on petrol, yor engine runs smoother and will last longer...

There's basically only three drawbacks, namely the big tank, a small decrease in power and a relative lack of fuel stations having gas...

I'm extremely satisfied with the gasconversion on my (old) Volvo...

  • 1 month later...

I’ve read these comments and nothing I read convinced me why the guy should get a diesel over petrol; I have a petrol fortuner and a diesel ford ranger incidentally. So why?

Resale price may be a bit more in a diesel but can some one confirm that and by how much – is our expat-motors man reading and can help here?

I also don’t think it matters that a diesel might last longer as virtually no one these days buys and keeps a car indefinitely, everybody trades in for new.

The difference in petrol and diesel pump price is not that much. The difference in km per litre is not that much. But if there’s a significant difference in price, a 100k is it new, so work out how long at the cheaper pump price / better km per litre but higher purchase price it takes before you’re quids in – your homework for tonight.

:o

I am also going to buy a new fortuner later this year, as the Wife will not travel in my Isuzu Highlander, she has found out the Mia Noi has been sitting in her seat, s h i t happens.

Are you seriously going to buy a new ar because your mia noi sat in the seat and now your wife won't sit in it?

Oh dear. you could always offer her the rear seat? Or the pick up bed?

Mia noi`s are quite expensive aren`t they!

I remember my ex girlfriend saying the same as I took one of my cars to Bk and parked it permanent at the appartment I had there.

Quote her;

"If I ever find out that you`ve had a gik or mia noi in my seat I will never put my ass in that seat again, period! "

Guess they got some issues over the seat thing :o

So to all you guys love having a gik also remember to go for the maximum % on the film when putting that onto your cars windows.

Smart man. I just bought a new Fortuner diesel and frankly I would have taken 4k for 200k baht off any time. Assuming it didn't have accidents etc of course...

why not go for the diesel manuel . only 1 million baht - 220,000 cheaper than the automatic and you can upgrade the seats to leather for 25,000 baht , Spoiler extra 5,500 baht , if you want it . The other differences , as far as I can see , are the radio/ disc player , only playing 1 disc at a time and air con being controled by knobs , but still basically the same .
