Few wish he died at the crash but it can happen on the transport to the hospital, the orange fixation blocs are wrong in position and not fixed, trust in rescue .... ???

Yes I made that comment on the PG website too. Look at the C-collars hanging right their. Back home the personal injury lawyers would be salivating over this photo.

No one happened to mention that his ambulance is sitting around at the presumed scene of the accident , while pictures are being taken and some people are just standing around shooting the <deleted> ,while the poor guy lays there , looking like he could use a Doctor and some x-rays to see how bad he's been hurt!

I worked the ER in the USAF , a person's life can be lost if he doesn't get to the hospital quick enough after a horrific accident like this , Yet ,it looks like nobody is in a hurry to get him to the Hospital ???

I figured it out , they were from BKK-PKT Hospital and probably waiting for the guy to answer if he has insurance or not and if he has insurance , his bill is gaining on what services he's had already  and what can they add on before anyone checks....

A crash victim that looks that bad , should be rushed to the ER immediately after getting him into the Ambulance !

Worry about Life first , money later.....but here money is the root of all evil , and EVIL spelled backwards means : LIVE !

Money isn't everything ,but it's way ahead of what's in 2 nd place ! TiT

I did note, in the photo, there is nobody even monitoring his vital signs.

Maybe he has one of those medically related episodes which caused the accident.....did he have a thai drivers license?  Perhaps his sugar was low and he needed food?  What about all you diabetics.....what happens when your sugar gets low.  For me, I usually go drive my SUV at high rates of speed on the highway....that usually helps.  Too bad about the Toyota.

Why such a headline? It seems to glorify this guy when it is certainly not warranted, whether he was drunk or sober.

We haven't seen a photo of the car wreck, as yet.

Maybe if we saw the wreck, it could be seen that it's a miracle he survived, thus, making it an "amazing escape" from death.

Is Thailand the ONLY country where hospitals and medic have a interest in money?
Without money or insurance which hospital, in which country would welcome a patient?

Any public hospital in Australia, New Zealand or Cuba, just to name 3 off the top of my head

Then there is wonderful Canada with its Universal healthcare. Everyone is the same.

Are you seriously referring people to the Daily mail as proof of something?

Obviously not. I was referring to the survey/study which the article cited (if you had bothered to read it).  I'm not a Brit, so I don't have a nuanced understanding of your press. However, here are a few articles from a range of other sources, all of which refer to the same set of findings. Perhaps you'll find one more to your liking. Since the source data are the same, it won't change anything...

So far you have given 5 links, I have checked 3 of those. 1 of those 3 does mention flipflops are dangerous, no source is given for that except 'a survey', the other 2 are just very general articles.

Can't be bothered with the other 2 anymore looking at that none of the 3 I did check proves your point.

OK, my friend, I'll do the reading for you:

http://cars.uk.msn.com/news/flip-flops-most-dangerous-shoe-to-drive-in

"Driving in flip-flops is more dangerous than heels, with the flimsy footwear responsible for an estimated 1.4 million car crashes or near misses per year."

"According to the research study, wearing flip-flops impairs your movement between the brake and accelerator pedal by up to 0.1 seconds – this sounds a tiny fraction of time, but that momentary delay could be enough to cause a crash. Add to that flip-flops reduce the average driver’s braking force by 3% compared to safer, sturdier shoes"

http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/9784/Shoes-driving-us-to-distraction

"Dianne Ferreira, spokesperson for Brake, the national road safety charity, said: "An alarming number of female drivers simply do not realise the danger they are putting themselves, and others, in by driving in inappropriate shoes....High heels, platforms and flip-flops can seriously hamper your ability to drive safely, and could have fatal consequences."

http://www.nasdaq.com/article/is-barefoot-driving-legal-cm246451

"NMRA, an insurance company in Australia, surveyed 1,000 drivers and found a whopping 60 percent were cruising in flip-flops or stiletto heels -- and 38 percent said they have had a shoe come off prior to an accident...Sheilas' Wheels , a British insurer, found that 80 percent of female drivers were wearing "inappropriate" footwear when driving -- flip-flops, high heels and bare feet. One in 10 of the respondents reported a car crash or a near miss due to their footwear.... Flip-flops offer zero heel support, tend to slip off and can become wedged under a pedal, which can be a major distraction as a driver tries to slip the shoe back on."

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/3245287/Women-in-high-heels-risk-driving-accidents.html

"Flip-flops and slingbacks also make a car harder to control, meaning out of the UK's 14.3 million female motorists, 11.5 million could be at risk.

Insurance company Sheilas' Wheels surveyed 750 women - out of these, 75 admitted having an accident or "near-miss" because their shoes had slipped off or got stuck between or under the pedals."

Thanks.

However, you don't seem to understand the scientific value of these 'reports/surveys/statements', so there really is not point in this.

I remember when mobile phones were invented - people were talking on them whilst driving.  Then, the mobile phone gained texting capability.

The motor vehicle accident rate, whilst someone was either talking, or texting on their phone, was a high percentage.

Data was collected from the various crash scenes, from minor accidents to fatal accidents.

That data, used in "studies/reports/statements" all showed the risk of a accident increased, significantly, if the driver was talking or texting on their phone.

The Government of my home country then legislated against it and you are now fined if driving whilst talking or texting on your phone.

in this case, obviously, there was "scientific data" which resulted in a change in legislation.

Perhaps the use of inappropriate footwear when driving, may yeild similar statistic results, showing it does cause accidents.

OK so I don't know the specifics of this incident, but it is interesting to me to see so many western men return to a state of lawlessness in
Thailand. No seatbelt, no helmet drunk driving to name a few.

I might add when in Issan recently the GF and her people said when I buckled up in the car, don't need no police here!

Assumption: drunk <deleted> driving home at 5am. Why do innocent kids have to die instead of these drunk pricks

I wouldn't assume he was drunk, there's nothing much in the way of bars coming from that direction, it's possible of course but more likely if he was traveling in the other direction from Phuket Town or Patong.

Personally in my opinion, I think it's just as likely that he was just going to fast and lost control. For those of us who actually know Phuket the section of road they are talking about is a three lane carriageway and main route to and from the airport. Putting this incident aside speeding on this road is very common and usually from the airport taxis, limos (!) and WMDs ( PCI commuter vans). At that time in the morning the road would have been very quiet.

Many, however it could be said that they are merely behaving like many of their hosts, "when in Rome"

Not at all. Flip flops are an abomination, especially when driving a car and riding a m'bike. Here speaks the voice if wisdom and common sense.

Completely agree. I've driven in flip flops and recall one incident where I was making a right turn on a clear road and then saw a Mercedes traveling very fast towards me. I tried to stop but the flip flop, being lose and rubbery, got caught between the accelerator and brake, so I didn't stop but with the auto in "D" just crept forward. Luckily the Mercedes driver managed to steer around me, but I don't drive in flip flops anymore. Better if drive in bare feet if there is no other option.

I still use them on the bike though.

Hi Guys,

I'm not for long time into Thai Visa, but what I read until now a lot of unqualified comments and speculations(gossip) in all forums.

I recommend in general stick to the facts:

Facts: 1. He did'nt weared a belt, for this he got already his punishment.

           2. High speed, but we don't why.

I will give you the follow possible scenario:

He got a call from his family bad news.

Caused of thess he drove to fast, not good but happend.

For example he got a heartattack and this was the reason the car got of the road, could also be happend with lower speed.

I recommend to all of us, first touch the own nose before you throwing a stone.

Unfortunately is our world full of hypocrits, who forgetting their past, being in a similar situation and was just lucky bastards.

People like this makes me sick. sick.gif

Uh?  No speculation in your commentary?

A "possible scenario" is speculative.

Of course we do not know (at this time) why he was speeding, but his speeding cannot be justified. Look at the result!

As a female who used to have a car.  If i was going out for the day or evening.  I would put on a pair of old sneakers, which i kept in the car for driving purposes, and when i got to my destination i would then put on the sandals or shoes as appropriate.

I did drive a friends car with bare feet once, we drove at about 10K an hour!!!

I hope this man pulls through, looking at the pic of the car he should be glad he is alive and in one piece.

Surely if this is an NRMA survey from Australia, 60% would be cruising wearing thongs or stiletto heels. I have been driving for over 30 years wearing thongs and never once have they caused me to have an accident
