Most countries have no rules that say you cannot apply for a new passport with any amount of time remaining or pages left.

If you you willing to pay for it they will issue one to you.

Not sure what point Immigrations have reached with their computers, but if you get a new passport while in Thailand, at some point you'll need to present both the new and old passport to an immigrations officer ... either to transfer extension of stay stamps or at least when you want to exit the country. Isn't it possible the overstay notation will still pop up on immigrations computer screens in future anyway since both passports will still be linked to the same individual.

UK HMPO will not create a new passport unless you have only 1 year left in the existing passport, they will then aid the 1 year left to the new 5 year passport thus having then a total 6 year passport.

UK HMPO Issues 10 Year Passports for Adults (those over 16).

Yes, the general issuing is for 10 years, my stated 5 years was a misprint, I received 5 passports in the past and the total time factor is 50 years, next year 2015 I have to renew my passport again and that will then bring a total of 60 years.

I got a new passport in Liverpool in October 2012 during a visit to the UK, my existing passport (standard) had about 4 years left and there were plenty of unused pages. I wanted to get the 'Jumbo' passport as I was not sure when I would be back in the UK again, a good move as events have panned out with 'Trendy'. I phoned, made an appointment and did the 4 hour service. No questions asked as to why I wanted to change the passport before it had expired and when it had unused pages.
