Hacking trial: Coulson guilty, Brooks cleared of charges

Former News of the World editor Andy Coulson has been found guilty of conspiracy to hack phones.

Ex-News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks was cleared of all charges in the phone-hacking trial.

Coulson went on to become director of communications for the prime minister, who has apologised and said hiring him was "the wrong decision".

Royals, celebrities and victims of crime were among those whose phones were hacked by the News of the World.

The paper was closed by its parent company, News International, in July 2011 after it emerged that it had instructed a private investigator to intercept - or "hack" - voicemails left on the mobile phone of murdered Surrey teenager Milly Dowler in 2002.

Coulson and Mrs Brooks were among seven defendants on trial at the Old Bailey.

The verdicts in full are:

Andy Coulson was found guilty of a charge of conspiracy to intercept voicemails
Mrs Brooks was found not guilty of conspiracy to hack voicemails, two counts of conspiracy to pay public officials and two counts of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice
Former News of the World managing editor Stuart Kuttner was found not guilty of conspiring to hack voicemails
Cheryl Carter, Charlie Brooks and News International's former head of security Mark Hanna were cleared of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice
The jury is continuing to consider misconduct in public office charges against Coulson and former News of the World royal editor Clive Goodman.

The whole thing has Rupert Murdoch's dirty corrupt fingerprints all over it.

And don't forget the massive amounts of tea money extorted by the endemically corrupt police.

News of the World paid bribes worth £100,000 to up to five Met officers

Investigators inside Scotland Yard are trying to identify up to five officers who were paid between them a total of at least £100,000 in cash from theNews of the World, the Guardian understands.

Documents sent to the police by News International did not name those involved but contained pseudonyms which investigators within the Yard are trying to match with individual officers.

The revelation comes a day after Sir Paul Stephenson, commissioner of the Metropolitan police, said that the amounts involved had been paid to a small number of officers.

News that officers were allegedly paid so much in bribes has caused shock and concern within Scotland Yard, where the directorate of professional standards is now investigating the matter. There have been calls for an external force to be brought in to investigate the scandal –Boris Johnson, the mayor of London, has said someone else should wash the Met's dirty linen in public.

It seems hard to believe that Wade was unaware of what was going on at NotW. If she is truly innocent of all charges, she must be an incredibly inept leader to allow such a toxic culture to flourish under her watch for so long - and to be totally ignorant of it.

It does seem remarkable that Brooks was acquitted. I recall watching her in front of the Commons Select committee admitting to bribing a police officer in return for information and she thought that was legal.

And then there was the fact of her husband attempting to dispose of laptops with the knowledge that the police were coming round - apparently to avoid them spotting his extensive collection of lesbian pornography.

Not exactly extracted, they were offend the money, everybody has a price, bet virtually anyone would as they say bend over to pick up the soap if the price is right.

And those police and other public servants that did take the money face a long time inside.

Rupert Murdoch: Scotland Yard want interview about crime at his UK papers.

Rupert Murdoch has been officially informed by Scotland Yard that detectives want to interview him as a suspect as part of their inquiry into allegations of crime at his British newspapers.

It is understood that detectives first contacted Murdoch last year to arrange to question him but agreed to a request from his lawyers to wait until the phone-hacking trial was finished.

The interview is expected to take place in the near future in the UK and will be conducted "under caution", the legal warning given to suspects. His son James, who was the executive chairman of News International in the UK, may also be questioned.

Rupert Murdoch may face police questioning after Rebekah Brooks cleared
Nick Miller
Europe Correspondent

LONDON: -- Despite the exoneration of one of his closest lieutenants, Rupert Murdoch himself may be the next target of a police investigation into crime at the media mogul’s British newspapers.

In July last year it was reported that Operation Elveden detectives in London had launched an investigation into Mr Murdoch’s personal knowledge of payments to police and other public officials by his journalists.

Reporter at The Guardian, Nick Davies, who broke many of the phone-hacking scandal’s stories, wrote on Tuesday that Mr Murdoch had been officially informed by Scotland Yard that detectives wished to interview him under caution – and were also considering whether to interview his son, James, a former executive chairman of News International.

They had been waiting until after the phone-hacking trial to schedule the interviews.

Poor DC really getting it in the neck, first PMQ obviously not slept well last night, pointing out the Leveson enquiry exonerated him, oblivious to the dirty washing presented as evidence in the trial, now the Judge has just given him a public rollicking.

Judge rebukes Cameron for comments on Coulson conviction

A senior judge has rebuked David Cameron for commenting on the conviction of Andy Coulson while the phone-hacking trial was still going on.

The prime minister apologised on Tuesday for employing Coulson, saying it had been the "wrong decision".

Mr Justice Saunders said his intervention was "unsatisfactory" and set a bad example to the media.
