Where to make glass table tops to protect wooden tables

Hi all, we just bought an apartment in Bangkok and we're wondering where can we get glass table tops done to protect our wooden tables from scratches and spills.

Would be great if any of you can help!

Cheers!

Any aluminium door maker should be able to cut and bevel some glass to fit. Almost one on every main street. Depending where in Bangkok you are.

You say that your tables etc., are wood.

Be careful that they are all exactly square or exact rectangles, etc.

If not, there is risk that the glass pieces don't fit exactly.

My family (when I was away) went to two glass shops with measurements, the glass arrived and it didn't fit exactly, and nobody could understand why.

When I returned I measured the glass pieces and they were exact squares / rectangles.

My family were assuming the glass shops had make mistakes, but when I measured the wood tables, etc., I discovered they were not square.

We eventually got one more professional glass shop to come to the house and measure everything carefully then cut more glass. Their fee to come and measure was 500Baht which included 6 items, but only about 1 kilometer to our house.

And no, they wouldn't recut the pieces already supplied by other shops because it would mean cutting off sloping size slivers, which they said was very difficult to do and difficult to leave very straight edges. I'm sure they were telling the truth on this point.

wow

I guess it would be better for us to walk around the neighbourhood and see if there is a professional glass shop. Where do you live? Would it be convenient to give us the glass shop's contact?

From what I have gathered, 500 Baht is inclusive of 6 pieces of glass and labor?

At that time we lived on Jomtien Beach, Pattaya and the shop was on Teppasit road very close to the big PTT gas station. (Just before the PTT station (same side of the road) as your driving towards Sukhumvit Road.)

This was about 5 years back so I don't know if the shop is still there, and we moved long ago to the North of Thailand.

The 500Baht fee was to come to the house and measure everything exactly, nothing more. The glass shop owner clearly knew what he was doing and he used some additional but simple equipment to get the exact angles of each corner etc., / to check that corners were 90 degree angles or not, whether opposite sides were equal etc.

He guaranteed that the glass would fit exactly. He suggested we use glass which just a little thicker, he showed us some examples in his house next door, we agreed and it did look better. We watched as his staff marked new sheets of glass to the exact measurement, they cut it, polished the edges and everything fitted perfectly.

It was six pieces, two tables typical dining table size for about 8 people, plus two typical coffee tables and two bedside tables. All up cost of the actual glass, cutting, polishing and delivery was (as best I can remember) about 4,000Baht, but as mentioned this was about 5 years ago and I'm sure prices would be quite a bit more today.

I'm aware of another case where the shop came with very large sheets of paper (something like butchers paper), they put the paper over the top of each table etc., then carefully marked the exact outline of each table etc., cut the paper slowly then laid it out again to ensure it did exactly match the actual table etc. They then used this to mark the sheets of glass, and it produced exact fit.

Good luck.

Really , how can you think that a call out fee , glass cut to size for 6 pieces , labour and delivery would be done for 500thb ???

Just to mention that I did NOT write / submit the line:

"Really , how can you think that a call out fee , glass cut to size for 6 pieces , labour and delivery would be done for 500thb ???

Someone had added this line, NOT me.

Not exactly what you are asking for but why not try and put urethane or some other protectant made for wood? It will make it easier to clean and protect the surface.

Measurement of wood table should be done accurately perhaps by some local professional so that any error may not cost you for the glass and including any other service charges if any. You can easily find local there who can do this job well. Ask them to measure solely at their own responsibility and also be careful about their inflated hefty charges, you can do bargaining too. thanks
