Who's louder and more obnoxious, Chinese or Americans?

Sent from my iPad using Thaivisa Connect Thailand

Hmmmm good question. Chinese definitely louder, but for me (as I do not speak any Chinese dialect) Americans more obnoxious because most of what comes out of their mouths is rubbish even after you edit out every second word which is 'like'. "It's like way better in the states cause it's like we do it like this way like real like".

For those of you with a bias toward Americans, if you travel, consider taking a trip to the US. Start in Los Angles, travel up the coast to Washington State, then across the North to the Great Lakes, drop down and tour the interior, then down to Texas and across to Florida. From Florida travel up the East Coast to Maine. After you're finished, recheck your biases. America is an incredibly diverse place with a multitude of different dialects and attitudes. Generalizations are just that - generalizations.

And the excessive use of the word 'like' is a dialect. One of many, and it's one that has developed relatively recently in a certain sub-culture of Americans.

I've done that trip you talk about.

and there are a helluva lot of ignorant people when you come off the coasts.

Yeah, it's a bit like going from Bangkok to villages somewhere in Isaan. You leave urban 'sophistication' and enter a simpler life in the rural Bible belt. No doubt, most middle class and HiSo folk from BKK consider rural villagers as 'ignorant'. Christianity aside though, folks in the interior tend to be individualist, conservative, self-reliant and more nationalistic. And I'm talking in general terms now too...there are exceptions. And even on the West Coast, Western and Eastern parts of Washington, Oregon, and California are worlds apart. But I'll take rural America over any of the urban inner-cities any day of the week. Inner city Detroit, LA, Oakland, etc have more in common with Baghdad -- they're war zones. Gang related, but still war zones. In large American cities, there are places you can go, and place that are flat out dangerous to enter. So believe me, you can find pockets of abject ignorance in the cities too. And world affairs? The majority of the population nation-wide is pretty ignorant.

<deleted>. Has Brazil created their own language? American English is the DOMINANT style of English in the world today. Deal with it! (You hate that, don't you?)

That's debatable

.

With the huge British empire leaving a legacy of British English especially in India's huge population and almost every African country speaking British English.

I had that argument with a very loud, opinionated co-teacher from the States telling me I have to teach American.

My response?

A kid from Thailand is more likely to meet a Brit or an Aussie than an American here, so dammit I'll spell colour properly and I'll say Zed not Zee.

Why are so many of you yanks, pushy and loud and arrogant?

This is 2014. Thing change including attitudes. Go back to my post number 424. I explained why Americans develop their perceptions. And unless you travel across the US, you'll never understand. You'll cling to your bias. And I'm OK with that -- I've been around enough that I can even understand why you cling to your bias. No problem. Exploring reality is a choice. Remaining ignorant is a choice. Up to you.

They dont change that fast. i lived in america for years, have travelled there constantly, have many friends there and am well aware of the realities. huge numbers americans were slavish believers in vietnam, iraq 1, iraq2, nicaragua etc etc and are more brainwashed every year. the fact that a lying criminal like george bush could be re-elected and palin could actually be taken seriously enough to run for vice president is evidence enough that there is something extremely wrong with a large proportion of the society. the fact that a war criminal like henry kissinger or dick cheney is regularly consulted by mainstream american media as authorities on foreign affairs or a senile simplistic liar like reagan is looked on as a great president turns the stomachs of sane people.

What are the nationalities of these sane people?

I was on an elevator in Vegas and there was a younger couple. I saw them looking at the elevator regulation sign. I joked that it probably cost us $ 10,000 tax dollars a year. We laughed and I said heck I don't even know if you're American. They laughed and said no, we're British. I asked them how they like the Americans, and right away the gal said friendly!

Quality Brits who could afford to travel to the USA. I've met many nice, intelligent Brits--in Britain, where most successful Brits stay. So, like most 'Mercans, I once had a good opinion of Brits.

But then I found that here in Thailand and on this forum (unlike other int'l forums) we mostly just get the dregs. There should be a special subforum devoted to Brit crime in Thailand.

Now, I did meet one nice ol' working class Brit bloke, but he could only talk about "birds" and died of AIDS after boasting he never used condoms. Another Brit, most intelligent, urbane, and civilized, actually spoke understandable English rather than the usual dialect. But after all he had finished Oxford. Wish I could meet more of his type--he's dead now, too--but the chance is so remote that me, I'd no longer bother giving the time of day to any Brit or Ozzie I happened to encounter here. I avoid them whenever possible--except for the Scots, but, unlike Gordon Brown, most can be difficult to understand--for 'Mercans. wink.png

I much prefer the Germans--all around better, speak better English than the Brits, except noisier. I count some of them among my best friends, who've been helpful and actually know something besides footie. I've met some great Swiss and Scandinavians, too.

So, OP, hope your question is now fully answered. Brits, and to a lesser degree Ozzies, consider this their very own private forum, their turf. Hence we're constantly hearing about ol' blighty and prices are given in GBP. You can assume it's warfare here--and you're vastly outnumbered.

Expect pages and pages of ignorant, leftist, hypocritical America bashing at the slightest excuse--which you've given them w/ this topic. It's always been so and always will be here.

About the best you can hope for is the fun of taking potshots when the opportunity arises and have a laugh as I do at their provincialism and whining. Fortunately the mods delete the worst America-bashing posts, and sometimes, in the best of all outcomes, ban the posters. Hence the name-calling has pretty much been stopped and Brits don't get to clap and cheer anymore whenever some American happens to bite the dust in Thailand. So that's progress, innit? smile.png

If you scrape the bottom of the barrel, you'll find the dregs. There are plenty of decent Brit expats, but they don't hang around the bars, and they mostly don't bother posting here. Can't say I blame them.

My point was, being told I had to teach American because America is the greatest country on earth is an arrogant thing to say.

What this thread is about. Many Americans fit the stereotype, loud and pushy.

It is natural for me to spell and speak Canadian English.

I do point out the differences and they usually get it.

I also explain that they need to keep consistent; don't mix the two.

No need for the Grow Up comment.

I spoke the truth.

Sorry if the truth disturbs some people.

Is speaking the truth a bad thing?

The truth is the majority of NATIVE English speakers are actually IN the U.S.A. and internationally American style English HAS indeed emerged as the DOMINANT style over British English.

You don't like it? Again, sorry, what's the big deal? We understand each other ... for the most part.

Observers say American English is taking over across the world as the language of international business. The rise of American idiomatic expressions and the American accent in other areas is often ascribed to the world's increased exposure to American culture, especially through movies, videos, computer games and the Internet

Every country has its share of a-holes. Maybe they gravitate to being expats.

You're right. This thread is about anti-Americanism. A lot of it is deserved and and some it is just sour grapes.

Maybe the take-away for all of us is that no one should be painted with a broad brush. Everyone should be given a chance to show they're not an <deleted>, regardless of their passport.

Sorry about the grow up comment. That one always pisses me off too.

In the spirit of this topic, there is a very funny British comedy show that has/had recurring characters of a hilarious and excessively friendly elderly American couple traveling in England and mixing with the locals. I'd like to share some clips of that (if I can find them) but I can't recall the name of the show. Does anyone know the name of this show?

OK Your statement of Dominate is just too strong.

American English is quickly rising rapidly but it only dominates certain aspects of the world. Media and internet and business..

Yes, there are more native English speakers in the States than anywhere else. There's a billion in India speaking UK English.

I was simply suggesting that telling me which one to teach was a typically American thing to say.

Your link and quotes don't say "the world," they say media, Hong Kong, and business.

But, it's an interesting tangent we're on.

You probably aren't that stereotypical Yank the world loves to hate who would tell me how to teach English. The guy I'm talking about was.

Here's a link to an article I think you may find interesting. It kind of talks about what we are.

It would help if Americans and their 'friends' stopped killing people.........also look at the tragedy of MH17...without a shred of evidence the US 'knows who did it' b******t!'

The US Government knows everything...everything!...

Example?

The US Government knows who did 9/11.....the American people don't....but already the case is closed. Next....

9/11 may have been committed with direct Saudi govt. sponsorship. Did the US do anything about that? Of course not. Allies are given a free pass. Wahhabism is one of the most extreme forms of religion on the planet. Saudi in a nutshell. Also, the Saudis have alot of money invested in the US. Another free pass. Biased foreign policy is the very definition of US foreign policy. It's no wonder that govt. is despised worldwide.

As an "American" let me say that the majority of American ex-pats I meet here have more than one working brain cell working which is more than I can say for SE Texass and many Americans. I realize that many countries produce their share of a**holes and I have meet both American and others here. For some reason "loud" etc. keeps coming up about Americans here. I have never seen and if I do I will tell them to shut up. Oh forgot a couple of young Americans bragging about their drug adventures and one bragging about being on parole, if he was on parole he wouldn't be here unless..... . When I politely explained to them they were asking for trouble one told me to shut my old mouth. They learned the old "stack and swivel" and no doubt in my mind DEA snitches. They left and were never seen again up here. People don't like the American government for good reason, neither do I. Like one poster said, don't paint all with a broad paint brush. Not meant to paint with a broad brush at all, just a minority, but the skin head tattooed British footballer are the worst I've seen in my 12 years here with <deleted> every other word and loud enough to be heard round the world. Hey I cuss and am probably a bit loud at times, like many of my generation I lost about 1/2 my hearing due to too many boom booms, and the whapata, whapata of helicopters. Sorry 'bout that, 10,000 gomenasais and a bottle of beer.

You should't sit when you talk about things you don't understand. It muffles the sound.

Every government's foreign policy is influenced by self-interests. It's not a popularity contest.

You probably throw a fit every time fuel prices go up.

Yes, but some are more duplicitous and deceitful, and heinous than others. To deflect blame onto another country altogether (the fabrication of a bogeyman), invade that country, spend a trillion or more in treasury, have a few thousand of your own boys killed, and according to independent organizations, be responsible for the deaths of about 200,000 people, including alot of women and children is a serious breach of foreign policy. Are you suggesting a free pass for the govt. responsible? Not to mention the aftermath. And all this is besides the point. We are discussing why the US is hated, are we not?

Tony Bliar was worse than Bush. I hate that man and I'm glad that after 22 years of armed service I didn't serve in his disgusting and unprovoked attack and murder of innocent Iraqi people. Just look at the mess we now have in the Middle East. As for the Septics (septic tank...yank, cockney rhyming slang, nothing personal) I served alongside both good and bad. I lived in Fort Lewis, Washington State and had a ball. I don't normally like cities, but Seattle and its people were about as good as they come.

Yes, American foreign policy was great against the Russians, but is truly bad elsewhere, as is their environmental policies, gun laws etc.

I grew up thinking cowboys were the good guys and the Indians were the bad guys thanks to Hollywood. Now I know better.

Actually The Americans are often pretty sensitive. The piss taking between Aus, NZ, England, Wales, Ireland and Jockland is relentless. Can we all agree to just make fun of The French?

Sent from my GT-I9500 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

Maybe that's the problem. Americans 'take a piss' when they go to the bathroom. And 'take a joke' when they go to the bar. smile.png

And stop with the tired old WW2 jokes.

If it wasn't for the French, we'd all be speaking french.

Ye the French hate the Britt's they never ever won a war against us, never. To busy putting their hair pieces on and makeup. And that bent nose shit De Gaul.

The French never won a war against the Brits. Think 1066

It was William of Normandy who successfully invaded Britain in 1066. The clue is in the name. Normandy was not French - it was Norse. It was created in 911 by a treaty and first ruled by Rollo who was a Norse Viking, either a Dane or a Norwegian. Historians aren't quite sure.

The French have never won a war against us...

Have you ever thought that in most cases it could be an anti squarethecircle sentiment rather than an anti American sentiment?

The Kiwi guy gave you some good advice though. Should take it unless you want to be going back to the states in a bodybag.

Well if that is the punishment for standing up to pedo's, then fair enough. Maybe with this new visa crackdown it's going to get tougher for them to hide out here.

This is my personal favourite.

It's a dramatic poster for people who are more interested in fake drama than real facts.

The genocide charge became popular during protests against the Vietnam war.

Deadly pathogens from European settlers were responsible for the largest number of native american deaths.

Slavery has existed since ancient times. And it still exists today because it’s a profitable system.

Slavery polarized the U.S. before and after its very costly civil war.

American history taught in schools, has gotten a lot better about explaining the real facts. And making sure no one forgets.

Just one reason of many for an answer to the OP. I always take individuals as I find them. What you post is fair enough. It is a massive and complex question really and could easily apply to many nations and their people. Three countries that get off particularly lightly are the German, Japanese and Russians. Truly terrible histories.
