On June 16 I was issued a Double Entry tourist visa and used the first entry to enter Thailand. This visa expires on August 15, at which time I intend to have it extended 30 days at immigration.

Today I received my new US passport and had the old one (with the Double Entry tourist visa) invalidated. I was also given a signed and stamped letter by the US Embassy requesting transfer of my visa to my new passport.

My question is obvious. How do I accomplish, in the most efficient manner, both

- the transfer of my current visa to my new passport with my as-yet-unused second entry intact

- the 30 day extension of my current stay

For example, in a simple world I would expect to be able to go to immigration on August 15th, have the entire double-entry visa officially transferred to my new passport, and then proceed to have my current stay extended. Since this is not a simple world, I am asking you fine folks what hoops I should expect to have to jump through.

Thanks so much,

DF

Your visa cannot transferred. You will have to use both passports when you enter the country to show your visa in the old one and be stamped into the country in your new one.

When you got to immigration they will will transfer your entry/permit to stay stamp to your new passport and do the extension stamp in it.

You will need to complete this form http://immigration.go.th/nov2004/download/pdf/transferstamp.pdf

Be sure you take the letter from the embassy with you.

Sorry -- typo in the email above.

How long has it been required that I need a  letter from the embassy stating that I have been issued a new passport and I need the stamps transferred from the old passport to the new passport.?

The US embassy issues the letter addressed to Immigrations automatically ... I got one a week ago.

The requirement is a policy issue and, like many things, depends on the Immigrations office or officer you deal with. Probably best to have it and not need it rather than need it and not have it. I've heard about the requirement mentioned quite often, though I don't know how long it's been a requirement.

A letter from the embassy for the stamp transfer has been required for many years. Not all offices ask for it though.

Some embassies give you a letter when you get a new passport. Others you have to ask for it.

Ubonjoe thank you. That sounds fine - sounds like I won't "lose" my double-entry visa in the process (i.e. the second entry will still be honored), which is what I'm most concerned about.

Also it sounds like there won't be a problem getting the stamp transferred on the same visit to immigration as my extension. I will plan to do both on the 15th.

Which office do I go these days? Chamchuri Square?
