Update to the post - stolen iPhone on Phi-Phi

About 4 weeks ago, I related the story of how a Chinese couple at my hotel had left their iPhone (with many family photos on it), at their last hotel on Phi-Phi.  I telephoned the hotel manager, but she denied finding the phone.

GPS tracking showed that the phone was not switched on. or out of Wi-Fi range.  But several days later, the phone was switched on again, with a location at that same hotel!

Although the tourists had filed a report with the Tourist Police in Phuket, follow-up was slow, probably because Phi-Phi is in Krabi province.

To try to get a result, I contacted the Chinese Consul in Phuket, who promised to take the matter up with the Krabi police.

Today, the Consul called me to tell me that the Krabi police had visited the hotel and caught the manager 'red-handed' using the iPhone, which she admitted to stealing.

However, since the tourists have already returned to China, it is unlikely that the thief will be prosecuted.  The iPhone will be returned to the proper owners by EMS and the thief will be free to steal from her hotel guests again.

I would love to name this hotel, as a warning to any potential guests, but I know that forum rules do not allow this.  I will try to warn others via the LP forums......

A happy ending, but I never got the chance to use my cricket bat.....

If caught red handed, why is sharing the success story of finding a lost phone not allowed?  This isn't a name and shame case, simply a success story of a recovered phone.

There is no official source, such as a news report from official police sources. If Simon was to name the hotel or manager then that would be considered name & shame under Thai law.

Simon is a TPV.  Doesn't that make him an "official police source?" :)

"However, since the tourists have already returned to China, it is unlikely that the thief will be prosecuted." - surely they would confess tho their crime, after all, every other criminal here does. :)

They have already confessed, and the tourists filed a police report before they returned to China.  But apparently that is still not enough to prosecute the thief in the absence of the Chinese tourists..

If they can't have a finger pointing photo opp there's no hope. Maybe they could point their finger via Skype?

That's rubbish.  If police have a signed confession, they can be charged.

If at Court they plea not guilty, ok, the Chinese victims would need to give evidence, and as they will not return to Phuket in order to do so, the matter would probably be thrown out, but after confessing to a crime in Thailand, it usually indicates a plea of guilty, otherwise the offender would have to accuse the police of obtaining the confession through coercion, which is a loss of face for police and the offender would know that would have further consequences.
