Hmm so a farang caught with a 1 year overstay gets the same sentence as a Thai doctor who cuts his wife up and flushes her down the toilet: 10 years.

Yep sounds about right.  Amazing Thailand.

So you are saying that a foreigner caught on 1 year overstay gets a prison sentence of 10 years ? Rubbish

Its a ban on entry to Thailand for 10 years and does not equate to 10 years in incarcerated in a Thai prison.

its up to 2 years for foreigner for not carrying his/her passport.

So it's now official, you can murder someone and chop them into small pieces, not necessarily in that order and spend less time in prison than someone who gets caught with an empty bag which once contained some drugs.

Thailand truly is the laughing stock of the world when it comes to their disproportionate prison sentences.

Are the judges who make these decisions ever named alongside the sentences they hand down ?

I recommend you have a look what the courts do in Europe. After that the Thai courts will seem complete reasonable.....

rubbish, the only thing you could criticise the EU courts for is not being tough enough sometimes,, thats it. I haven't heard of anything like this before where a guy chops up his wife and does so little time.

Probably shouldn't of locked him up really.... I mean what's the point..

And what's with Royal Pardons... Certainly shouldn't be for Butchering someone...

Unbelievable....

You mean "Probably should not have....." Not to mention the incorrect use of capital letters and punctuation. Where did you learn your English? Thailand?

It's always hard to say if someone is going to re-offend or not.The general public probably isn't at risk but you wouldn't want to be the "love of his life". It's probably pretty easy to be "exemplary" in prison but I wouldn't know and would not like to find out either. I hope that he is truly rehabilitated.

GET LEGAL

You okay there? You appear to be veering into crazy mode, answering every topic with "GET LEGAL" like it actually means something.

And we'll start worrying when you, Rumblecat, start answering every topic with 'RRRR MIAOW' crazy.gif

Many are shocked that this guy is out so soon, but I can tell this is the norm in Finland. Even if someone murders someone else it's usually explained to be just a manslaughter. The senctence is typically something between 3-10 years (in most of the cases 3-4yrs) and you are out after two thirds is served. Just last week there was one case in which a lady sentenced from manslaughter (altho in reality it was a brutal murder) before did it again (altho in in my opinion it was yet another brutal murder). She was under parole when she did this. The first time she got 3yrs and was out after 2. This time she got 4 years but since she was in jail during the court time (1yr) she'll be out to kill again in less than 2yrs. Understandably many are totally pissed off by these "sentences" here. The lady is a f*cking crazy killer but despite of this she'll be out to kill again in less than 2 years. And I can tell she's just the latest example, this keeps happening regularly here.

If you are given life imprisoment (you get it from murder), in practice it's usually 12-14 years. But sentences like this are really rare. (Also other things: if you rape someone you're "naughty naughty" and usually get a ticket. Same if you beat somebody to hospital condition and even if the beaten one will suffer a life long disability. Typically also the beaten one gets a ticket if he/she has tried to protect him/herself with "violence". I'd say thai-system is better than ours, altho there's a lot of corruption there and if you pay lots of $$$ to everybody you'll get nothing. But I have a feeling it's pretty much the same here. You pay a bit and "murder ==> manslaughter"...)

But he was a Doctor! A Thai Doctor...

Doctors don't do that sort of thing... because the are Doctors.

as he was a gynaecologist maybe he is not poor and has the funds to get released....

If he was in anyway a decent gynaecologist, he'd have successfully tunnelled his way out within 3 months of being incarcerated. No need for funds.

So the people picking mushrooms in the forrest reserve received 15 years, while a cruel cold blooded killer served 7 years in jail for a gruesome crime. Oh wait, they were poor farmers and this guy a doctor. The usual rich and poor divide again. Thailand is truly sick and needs reforms everywhere. When I read things like this I realize that there is no hope.

Yes sir, this is  "Amazing Thailand" never stops blowing my mind. Now if a farang did this crime, which I doubt, this was totally Thai imagination chopping wife into small enough pieces to flush down the toilet ,  it would be a totally different scenario.1zgarz5.gif

Convicted Dr Wisut Boonkasemsanti set free

262092-imagejpeg-410469-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- Dr Wisut Boonkasemsanti who was sentenced to death for killing his wife and decapitating her body to conceal his crime was set free today (Monday) after spending 10 years, seven months and 25 days behind bars.

An expert in test-tube baby, Dr Wisut was among 14 convicts whose remaining jailterms were suspended and released. The ex-doctor has three years and one month to serve.

Mr Aryut Sinthoppant, director of Bang Kwang maximum security prison where Dr Wisut spent his term, said that Dr Wisut behaved extraordinarily well and was helpful in providing medical treatment to inmates in prison and, therefore, had his prison term cut for several times.

He claimed that Dr Wisut told him that he would spend time helping the society after his release from prison but did not elaborate what actually he would do.

However, Dr Wisut is required to report himself to the probation officer occasionally failing that he may be put back in prison to serve the remaining jailterm, said Mr Aryut.

He was sentenced to death for the muder of Dr Phassaporn, his estranged wife, and decapitated her body to conceal the crime. The sentence was upheld by both the Appeal and Supreme courts.

I hate this cheap computer, with no double-like button. I bet if I was rich, like some farangs I could name, I'd have a real computer, with a triple-like button.

Sorry I had to say this....

it is not the computer that has the "like Buttons".....

BTW: same in Finland. You get caught from drugs and you get typically really harsh sentences. Typically 8-12 years which is a lot more than you get from what in reality are murders but are the agreed to be manslaughters. Also if you make a tax fraud or insult politicians you get very long sentences (like 6-10 years).

...this news makes my head spin!?! recently a journalist was sentenced to 15 years in prison for unsavory remarks regarding the Royal family. will he serve his full fifteen years for simply using words? if that doctor was sentenced to death, well... he should be dead. blessings to the family of the brutally slaughtered wife.

Since he was providing medical treatment, his license was not revoked...

Prison Director: what would you do if you were free?

Dr. Wisut: I would help the society!

Prison Director: ok, you are free.

....10 years for killing and dismembering....???

"His behaviour while in prison was reported as exemplary and he already received two royal pardons, further reducing his sentence."

Amazing Thailand indeed.

Murdering someone, dismembering the corpse and flushing the body parts trough the toilet (performed by a Doctor) will get you for 7 years in prison.

Sending an SMS with a text that can be seen as "Lese majeste" will get you 15 years behind bars and no Royal Pardon.
