I am helping a friend in renewing his passport. He has an appointment at the end of the month so there is no hurry.

Yesterday he recieved the appointment letter and in it it said he needed to bring his birth certificate and a copy which he

doesnt have. We have all the other paperwork and copies already.

Is this a new rule because when I last renewed mine (2008) I didnt have my birth certificate.

I thought a passport was all the identification one needed.

Apart from your parents names it has all the other information (Place and date of birth and nationality).

In the UK Gov Guidelines website it doesnt mention a birth certificate, but in the letter  from Bangkok HMPO it does.

Also the helpful advice from Key Visa (Pattaya) doesnt include birth certificates.

Has anybody who has renewed their passport lately needed their birth certificate.

a birth certificate should not be needed if your renewing an existing passport, someone has made a mistake me thinks

you have no need to "prove" your entitlement to a british passport on renewal, which is all the birth certificate does

for someones first passport yes but renewals, no your already in the system

I must admit that on the  letter I sent  I just said passport application appointment.

Perhaps I should have said Passport Renewal appointment.
