CeltNYC
Is there any difference between quality of care between them? Wanted to do a full physical and heard the hospitals here run tests for cheaper than in the states. Know which hospital is most affordable while also being very thorough. Jimi007
OP, what do you expect? Vachira is a public hospital, Phuket International is a private hospital and a much nicer facility. I see you didn't have a quote from Bangkok Phuket Hospital as they would be way more than Phuket International. CeltNYC, depends on your insurance and what tests. I am insured in the US and for a $30 copay to see my doctor, he sends me to the lab to get all types of blood work and other test about once a year for free, and a free follow up visit. If you don't have insurance, medical care and tests are a LOT cheaper here as are pharmaceuticals. So are the dentists. Just had my teeth cleaned for 800 Baht.

How do you botch a teeth cleaning? At a Phuket hospital (an International one) dentist five years ago: The new female dentist was very shy and didn't speak more than ten words of English, the cleaning took fifteen minutes and she left without comment. As I went to pay the bill the nurse said, "you have to take care", pointing to the right side of her mouth, "you have something". Confused I left, further questioning was useless. Two years on in Chiang Mai my dentist tells me I need a root canal and crown, why hadn't I had my teeth cleaned and checked asked Dr Varaporn at CM RAM, a lady who had given me a clean bill of health just before I moved to Phuket. That's how.

Jimi007
Funny how this turns into teeth cleaning;-) I thought the same! Back to Phuket International, I have paid my registration fee years ago, which I do believe is a one time charge and I still have my ID card from them. I got a couple of blood tests and an appointment with a rheumatologist for about 1,000 Baht. Medication from their pharmacy is a bit over the top. I asked the doctor to just write down what I needed and I ordered it from my local pharmacy for less than a third the price.

You didn't go to a dentist for 2 years, presumably had no discomfort and the tooth problem was entirely the responsibility of the new, shy female dentist? Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect Thailand There was a cleaning every year, at the same dentist suite, although I didn't think it necessary to state that, there was no negative findings. When I returned to CM Dr Varapron said she saw something which needed to be xrayed, when she did so she found the inside of the tooth had rotted/decayed hence the need for the root canal and crown. No xrays were taken or requested in Phuket.

fiddlehead
170 baht for X-rays (OP) is really amazing IMO. I remember paying 700 baht at a clinic and thinking it was a steal. What would you pay in the states? I will comment that my son had an X-ray at Phuket International last year and about 2 minutes later, it showed up in the doctor's office on his computer. First time I had seen that technology. Once I had an x-ray taken at Krabi hospital and the nurses all started laughing when the young doctor (looked to be about 18 years old) hung it upside down on the light thing. (that was a govt hospital of course)

Bangkok Hospital Phuket. Dibuk Hospital PolyClinic. Passed it on Friday, looked finished and open. Official opening should be very soon. About 100 or 200 beds (depending on what you read!), major surgery wont be performed there, but an alternative for many things. Bangkok Hospitals made the claim it will be about 30% cheaper than their main hospital because of lower overheads.
Old Croc
On topic with costs: I regularly see 3 or 4 specialists at Bangkok Hospital (including a Rheumatologist) and pay either 800 or 1000 baht each visit. With extras, they do charge for every needle, syringe, bandage, etc. It adds up. Drugs there cost a fortune and should be bought elsewhere at every opportunity.
