Bit of Info from our Friends at Lazy Vacations...(with thanks)

Important news regarding hand baggage at UK airports

In support of IATA guidelines, BAA will amend their policy for dealing with hand baggage at all of their UK airports from 5 July 2006.

As of this date no passenger will be allowed through the security checkpoint x-ray machines, if their hand luggage exceeds the IATA standard size (56cm long, 45cm wide and 25cm deep).

If a passenger tries to pass through security with baggage that exceeds these dimensions they will be asked to return to check-in and check the bag into the hold.

Before travelling it is important that you check with your relevant carrier about dimensions and baggage allowances. :o

:D Good, about bloody time too. It infuriates me when people bring on what is essentially their whole two weeks holiday clothes as hand luggage. When you try to get your stuff in the overhead locker you have no chance at all :D . I really hope it is enforced. But fear that is unlikely :o

Having recently flown out of LGW, I can confirm that this was not being applied then-&-there, so I can continue to bring 20kgs+ of extra books/food/sweets-for-the-kids etc, as for the past 10 years.

However a friend recently had a problem at Manchester with just 12kgs !

Manchester always seems to be hot spot for checking hand baggage. I had to pay an extra £70 to take on board a bag containing some small but heavy photo albums.

I read recently that some airline, it could have been BA, I can't remember now, are considering scrapping the weight allowance for luggage carried on board altogether. The only condition is that you have to be able to lift it yourself into an overhead locker....anyone else read or hear this?

Yep..correct...according to BA....

so if your Dell boy type yuppie briefcase is full of gold bullion weighing in at say 50 kilos and you can hand carry it onto the para-fin budgie and put it in the overhead locker then No Problem.

Might have a question or 2 over the contents but just say its for your 2 week jolli in LOS and you should be OK... :o ....Travelling lite.....
