Vinyl LP Records. Where can I sell?

To be honest, I brought my Technics TT over from Europe about 10 years ago together with my vinyl, I have a very decent amplifier with vintage speakers, and I think I played 3 LP's in all that time.

I have approx 230.000 songs on my server, and that are the ones I listen to and enjoy.

What original '70s Hawkwind stuff do you have for sale?

I have nothing for sale, this is a buyers market biggrin.png

Oh wait, maybe greatest hits from the seventies, first press laugh.png

I am a buyer, will pay top dollar for German pressing of Roadhawks if it has the original 6 slides.

Zudrangma records in Sukhumvit specialises in rare and hard to find vinyl, as well as lots of classic thai and house. Retails for 100-2000 baht a 12"

Theres another place in Saphan lek (blue building that has lots of old vinyl, mostly 100 baht a pop). There is also a second hand hifi store in there that had technics 1200 mk2 turntbales for 8000 baht each, unsure of condition.

Back in NZ now, just purchased 200 records for $1 each a few days ago...

Also lots of Japanese expats in Thonglor who buy up lots of vinyl...

One dollar per item would be about right. This sort of stuff is two for a quid in charity shops in the uk. You could try melting them down, may get more that way. The sleeves framed for pubs and clubs could have better resale value. Thing is there are millions of them, so no rarity value.

I'm interrested in that second hand hifi store but don't understand "Saphan Lek" (small bridge) where is that located, nearby Zudrangma?,

thanks in advance.

Do you have any Hawkwind Japanese Vinyl (with obi strip ?) If yes, i'll trade you my sister (and a top of the range pair of ear defenders,, you'll need them)

Good luck selling your collection Ian, if you do have any Japanese vinyl with obi in good nick, certainly check out the many Japanese record stores online to get an idea of their value

The best market for you is Japan. You can get serious money there for many good titles. You could probably pay for some good vacation times there by just packing as many as your suitcase can hold and making the rounds there developing your contacts aferwhich you could ship the balance. When I owned a cd store in the USA the vinyl we were selling for $50 was being purchased in Japan for thousands of dollars (I was told). For me vinyl was a sideline so I never bothered but as you as so close to toyko it is probably worth you time to go there.

Absolutely correct. My Garrard 401 turntable is worth a King's ransom in Japan. Not selling it or my vinyl.

I had never heard of. Garrard turntable before so checked them out. They certainly look old school, and fetch a hefty pricetag. I found one for sale having a brief look at 5 grand. They use an idler drive is it? Never heard of that system of drive before. Much better than direct drive? Which uses magnets.

Damn, all this record talk makes me wanna dust of some lp's. :D

So since so many on here love vinyl, what's your most treasured/expensive record?

Mine would be a 12 inch limited edition copy of a Ramones 4 track from 1977. Sounds great, value maybe $200 or $300.

Then as far as rarer goes, Cold Chisel lp, but under the name of Barking Spiders which they used a few times. Not too many of those out there.

The Electric Prunes first album from 1967. The first LP I bought with my own money. The monetary value is irrelevant to me. The emotional value is immense. And the music still sounds great after nearly 50 years.

Its the Garrard 301, first sold in 1954, that is really sought after. There are plenty of specialist firms supplying spare parts for these old decks.

Idlers use rubberised wheels that typically drive either the rim or underside of the platter. They originate from the age of 78's with their larger grooves which meant much larger resistant forces under heavy modulation (creating programme related speed deviation) than micro-groove 33 1/3rpm lp's. They were standard fare until the '60's when Thorens brought out their belt drive TT's. We were hoodwinked as usual by the industry who told us that belt-drive was inherently quieter, whereas a quick comparison between the business end of an idler against a belt drive tells you the truth. Belt drives using one pulley on the motor to drive a given portion of the platter are MUCH cheaper to build.

DD's use a motor system typically incorporated into the platter mechanism, and attempt to maintain speed consistency via speed correction circuitry. Unfortunately, speed correction needs to detect a deviation before it can correct, by which time the damage is done. More elaborate PSU's help, but the problem is inherent.

Idlers, with their powerful A/C motors (inherently more stable than D/C) and drive systems can give a far more "alive" and realistic sound, although since most were designed prior to the introduction of stereo, will benefit hugely from high quality bearing upgrades to reduce noise. Modern high mass plinths will also help greatly in this respect.

Kris, the only Barking Spiders I have is the live 1983 album, have it on cd and vinyl, the vinyl still has the original poster that was issued with the lp.

What other BS stuff is there?

Have heaps of rare stuff, one of the rarest would be,The Church Sing Songs 12'' ep.

Iron Maiden Sanctuary sleeve before it was banned is another.

My advice to our Ianf is this:

First do a visual estimate of the condition of each of his Vinyl Records plus rpm and note down each title including the artists of his records one by one listing them under the categories of poor, good, very good and excellent conditions, with original sleeves or without.

Then do some research online to try and estimate the value of each Vinyl Record, as of course some will be considered more collectable than others according to their conditions and the artists. List the values on the notes.

After that do a search on facebook for buy and sell groups giving preferences to those nearest your location and place an ad. You will find that there are scores of these buy and sell groups on facebook, some may even pertain to the buying and selling of Vinyl Records.

Next place an ad in the Thai visa classifieds, craigslist and any other free Thailand classified ad sites.

If any prospective buyers are interested, tell them they have to collect or meet you somewhere, money upfront and then you give them the purchase.

Or to save yourself a lot of work, just decide how much you want for the whole bundle and advertise as I have mentioned above.

God your like watching paint dry.

I've got a small-ish collection (around 200) that I'd be willing to part with. Just hate seeing them sit without ever getting played. A few of the highlights (I guess) would be an original sealed Rare Earth, the 1st uncensored release of Santana Abraxas with poster before it was pulled from the shelves and returned with a sticker over the nudity, the complete Kiss collection including the mis-press with Kiss on side 1 and Alice Cooper on side 2, the original Reader's Digest Christmas collection stamped on heavy vinyl, The Archies smile.png , The Monkeys along with some rock, metal, pop, folk, etc. My collection is in Nakhon Nayok so you can PM me if you'd like to take a look and make an offer.

Hello Ian,

The resurgence in the LP HOBBY is there all be it still small. The market strength is in the old die hard audiophile gents that never got rid of there equipment. 9I am one of those) there are hundreds and thousands of the LP's on the market today THE USA is the main supplier followed by Europe, so those vinyls manufactured in the 50's 60'70's there are plenty of them around i.e. those recording that make up the mainstream. like love songs ballads heavy rock, crooners country etc. Do your vinyls fall into that definition? they can be had for as little as 50cents each up to $3 each on eBay and second-hand record shops depending on the scarcity of the recordings and the demand, up to 50US$ each

In regards to the current trend for vinyls, the new market trends is for vinyl LP that are of the remastered type,186-200 gms grade much thicker grade vinyl that those manufactured in the 50's60'70;s. The vinyl is also reputed to be virtually non scratch and producing high definition Digital wide stage sound,The Audiophile market is where you should be trying to move the current vinyls and some of the ideas and advice so far offered is sound. Consider checking to see how many of the current vinyls' in your collection are of the very thin vinyl, these type are very easily scratched and often deliver surface noise when being played back, they don't usually bring a high price unless rare. See if you can see any of them that has surface scratching no mater how small, they will effect the price you get fro them, If you have stored the vinyls in a box and they are standing on their edges, then there is a high chance that they might have developed a warp appearance, lay them on the table and see is they are at all bowed that caused stylus skip especially if one is trying to play them at very light tracking pressure that can spoil your chance of selling them, try to notice how may of them have their groves that are perhaps showing signs of being impregnated with the a coating from the vinyl plastic sleaves, that stuff can sweat and if they have been sitting in thee boxes as long as you say the have then heat could have effected them.

OK some good news now, if any of those vinyls are actually Phase 4 or Quadraphonic, they should fetch you a higher price than normal vinyls especially if they are pristine, quadraphonic IMHO is sounding better than the current remastered vinyls and standard stereo vinyls. Finally if you have any of the Led zeppelin vinyls in the collection then they are gold. In Australia they fetch any where up to $120 each depending on the recoding, the year and the quality of the LP.

I hope that helps you

  • 3 weeks later...

This has been an interesting Fred. I mean thread!

I've spent the last couple of weeks cataloguing.

There are 369 albums in the collection including some rare items such as Piper at the Gates of Dawn and Led Zepp etc.

269 Rock

Blues

Jazz

Folk

Classic

The 370th album will be free to whoever buys the complete collection: Mrs Mills' Party Piano songs. (Now where did that come from I wonder?)

PM me with requests for the list. Send an email if you can. ((Even the $1 guy was fun: If you can get Piper for that, then go for it!!!))

Thanks to everyone who responded.
