SURROGACY SCANDAL
DNA tests show 9 babies fathered by same man

Japanese suspect still at large; care of found infants now top priority

BANGKOK: -- The nine infants discovered in a police raid last week at a Bangkok condominium in connection with unauthorised surrogacy were fathered by the same man.

However, a DNA link between them and a Japanese billionaire has yet to be found, assistant national police chief Pol Lt General Jongjate Aojanepong said yesterday. The suspect is still at large.

Fifteen infants are registered as children of Mitsutoki Shigeta, 24, a Japanese businessman, he said.

Four of them, two of whom are twins, have departed the Kingdom holding Thai passports. Of the nine found at the condominium on Soi Lat Phrao 130, six are boys, Jongjate said, adding that further DNA verification was pending to establish who their mothers are and who fathered them.

A police source said later that there were 11 surrogate mothers for the 15 infants, who were delivered at nine hospitals.

They include twins just discovered at a Bangkok hospital where they had recently been delivered, while another infant has been discovered who is possibly a 16th child fathered by Shigeta, through surrogacy by a Thai woman identified merely as "Phaithoon", the source said.

Shigeta left Thailand last week when a second much-heralded surrogacy furore surrounding him was at its height, making it currently impossible to obtain his DNA for verification and paternal checks.

Immigration Police yesterday showed the past four years' travel records for Shigeta. He has entered and left Thailand in a total of 40 trips since 2010, and was accompanied on three of the departures with a total of four children of unknown names and ages.

He was accompanied by one child on May 9, 2013, by one child on March 25 this year, and by two children last Wednesday, according to Immigration Police records.

He last entered Thailand on August 1, with a female with the same surname. The woman left Thailand on August 5 for Phnom Penh, followed by Shigeta for Macau two days later.

This information contradicts earlier details about him having left the country with two children one day earlier.

Some have Caucasian features

Jongjate said some of the nine babies found during last week's raid had Caucasian features, which was the same information given recently by former cabinet minister Paveena Hongsakul, who led the raid at the condominium.

This could mean that some of their surrogate mothers are Western women hired by Shigeta, while the police source did not give details of whether the potential 11 mothers included any Westerners.

Deputy national police chief Pol General Aek Angsananont said the priority now was to protect the 15 babies, and the nine discovered at the condominium were currently in the custody of a government home for children. He described the surrogacy involving Shigeta as an "activity breeding a large number of children without love and bonding, which may lead to damage to society".

Jongjate said he would rather call what had gone on "the manufacture of babies" than surrogacy, and vowed that police would find out why the father in question would need a large number of babies through such a method, instead of marrying a woman and naturally having children with her.

"This is certainly not normal. There must be something hidden behind this," he added.

This story gets freakier by the day! Now there's the same man fathering these babies?

Who is this Japanese billionaire??

When the surrogate for Gammy lashed out to the Australian couple telling the father that he isn't the real father-- Does that mean the rumoured Japanese billionaire is the father?

If I were reading a crime novel that had these twists in the plot, I would have put the book down for being contrived and unrealistic!

Lord, you can't make this stuff up! I hope the authorities continue investing hard cuz this is some fine entertainment.

Keep it coming, I'm a big fan!

. . . and you wonderful "authorities" just let him leave with yet another child . . . he was under suspicion/investigation at the time, why let him leave?

The same reason a Swede who murdered a Kiwi by stabbing him in the back, a Norwegian who threw his girlfriend off a 5th floor balcony are now living back in Scandinavia in comfort and freedom. I am sure there are many other examples of individuals paying off the authorities. The corruption in the Thai system is so embedded  that the rich can do just what they want. It doesn't matter if they are Thai or foreign. Money talks in this place.

The cost of escaping a murder charge appears to be about a million baht incidently.

If they are his children and he is caring for them, I am not sure what crime he has committed on Thai soil.

Since when is it illegal to pay for someone to produce your own child. Husbands do it every day. The women havent been enslaved to do this it appears.

Where is the breach of law in Thailand? Edited by Thai at Heart

Perhaps a breach of Thai immigration laws? Coming to Thailand for the purposes of entering into a business arrangment that results in a Thai "product" that is made, sold, and taken out of the country in such an arrangement hardly falls under a tourist visa.

It would be more apt that Japanese laws were violated with the "import" of the babies into Japan. Japan bears the responsibility to locate and assure the babies are safe and in the care of their assumed parents and not part of some human trafficking or medical harvesting arrangement.

If he is indeed a billionaire son or from a very rich family, do you think he will be so stupid to get into the baby for sale business?

Unless he is being disowned by his family and not much money left.

Anyway, by the look of things, he seems to be having strong financial means to get 15 babies into this world.

This whole story is mighty strange and quite scary - for the children that is.

Surely the real motive must be very questionable.

AND I would suggest that the babies born with Caucasian features were more likely the product of Western sperm than a Western womb.

Meaning that the Japanese guy may not be the father of all the children, just the 'owner'.

Very worrying.

Just about any border authority would investigate anyone taking a child out with a different name on their passport. Excepting TIT of course!

Perhaps the baby business is the reason why they are rich. This could have been going on for many years and has only just come to light

Wow..what is this jap guy thinking? Maybe he wants offsprings to succeed his business empire (since he's a billionaire as reported), but doesn't want a wife to tie him down. Maybe he doesn't even like women at all.
