Myanmar takes a tougher stance on music piracy

Over Ks90 million worth of compensation for music piracy will be equally paid to respective parties in the music industry’s five main layers, according to the Myanmar Music Association (MMA).

 

The association won a lawsuit against a wholesaler of counterfeit products in Mandalay on July 30. The court ordered the defendant pay Ks 93.8 million in compensation after he’d been found guilty of having over 3,000 copies of pirated music CDs, VCDs and DVDs in his possession.

That raises an interesting question; will all the songwriters from around the world get their cut for songs that Myanmar artists have copied?

 

There was a case a few years ago of a well known "artist" here complaining about people pirating "his" music. Turns out he had resorted to plagiarism himself.facepalm.gif
