Forgive my pre-amble rambling but at 67yrs young you will perhaps understand - maybe it is because I live on the Darkside of Pattaya OR come from Yorkshire (ee by gum and all that)?.  Last year I brought from the UK the above model phone with a 64 gigabyte card as a present for my wife - she was clearly expecting an Iphone and as a result said she did not want my gift (ungrateful or what!!).  As a result I decided to use it.  So far so good in that I can send/receive sms messages and make/receive phone calls.  However, a few months ago it started making a sound like a single bell ringing - sometimes every minute or two and sometimes every hour or two.  I can only guess the phone is trying to tell me something but the noise is now annoying me.  Would someone please explain in words of one syllable how I can stop this?  For example: locate this icon, then press this button, then close this or press another button etc etc.  Since mobile phones were reduced in size to their current level I always had the cheapest Nokia available and never a problem here or in UK for sms and phone calls - this new technology is now way above my head.  Some six months or so ago I bought a manual in Thai for my wife just n case she would take an interest - it has never been opened and I certainly do not understand the contents.  I recall when I bought the phone in Sheffield seeing various bookshops selling lengthy manuals about the size of an A4 sheet of paper - now the phone is 'mine' does anyone know of bookshops in Thailand that may stock similar books in English?  I might as well make the most of my 'new' present.  About three months ago someone answered a post and indicated they were either an expert working with this technology or were very au fait with such technology but I cannot find the original post or their reply.  All assistance greatly appreciated as I can foresee this will be the first of many questions.  Over the last few months I have considered posting here and asking if anyone local would be prepared to give me (and/or my wife) some lessons every few weeks or so and in return I (or we) would be happy to pay for such assistance or take 'advisor' (and partner if appropriate) out for a meal or drinks - anyway, perhaps better to wait for replies and take it from there  Thank you and sincere apologies for rambling on - feel free to send personal message if deemed appropriate.

(1) did he mean the "Galaxy S3" I-9300?
(2) there's no need to buy official manuals, they can be downloaded off the manufacturer website
(3) "ping" seems to me either some kind of incoming alert (message?) or status info. Did Samsung roll out any system updates for the S3 recently?
(4) I think you should surrender and get her an iPhone. Possibly soon before they release a new model and the cost goes up (unless she's the type to accept something not top-of-the-line)

It sounds like an alarm. Could be from a SMS or MMS, which you might not have looked into or a different system alert. Hard to tell without seeing the screen.

OK, the info I asked for was in the thread title. Sorry.

Chris, while someone here might be able to guess what notification is actuating and give you step-by-step instructions to find and respond to it, the phone will keep on doing this as that is what this phone is designed to do.

Sound notifications are given for low battery, charging, charged completed, missed call, received email, sms, mms, social network messages, social network 'friends' inviting you to play 'Cookie Run' or inviting you to see their high score in 'Let's get Rich', an google app was updated, or other annoying message sent because some app is sending notifications.

Unless you are willing to learn about Google Android and the many phone features and app settings you might be better off getting an easier to use Nokia feature phone and sell the Galaxy S3 in the classifieds section of ThaiVisa.

Chris, can you give us the Make and Model of the phone please.

RichCor, please forgive my ignorance but all I can say is it is a Samsung S3 Galaxy with the larger screen, bought UK (Sheffield) in November 2013 and when I open it after it has been shut down it says 19300.

Hello build6: I am sure I meant the 1-9300 whatever that means.

I have downloaded something (manual or whatever but must read again) from the Samsung website but it did not seem as comprehensive as the books I had seen for sale in Sheffield at £20+ each - perhaps understandable..

No idea about (3)

As for (4), well her un-gratefulness has caused her to shoot herself in both feet!!  Whilst I try and do my best for my wife within certain financial restraints there are limits as to what I can afford.

In any event, many thanks to you for the courtesy of your very prompt reply.

Are you able to upload a picture of the phone display when its making that pinging sound?

Oooh: when the phone is opened the screen shows date, time and weather in Pattaya and below that three piccys of my three eldest kids under a heading of 'favourite contacts'.  The phone just seems to ping when I am not looking at it or using it.  Whilst I appreciate your suggestion of uploading a piccy I really have no idea how to do that.  SMS and speak I can cope with, anything more 21st century then I may as well resort to my childhood schooling of rubbing two sticks together - I should say Build6 that I say that with an element of levity and in no way wish to demene your comment for which I am grateful.  At the end of the day I am a 67yrs old thickie who was just not intended to be alive when all this new technology came out.  Many thanks Build6.

Thank you for your reply.  I am happy and will reply to each message sent re my quandry.  Unfortunately I would have no idea how to send a screen 'shot' when it pings.  I did reply to a response from Build6 as to what my screen is always showing/set at when I open the phone.  How to get that image from here to whoever is well beyond my knowledge or capabilities.

How to stop the noise is easy! Throw at concrete wall!

Nice one casualbiker - had I not paid £299 + £50 or so for 64gig extra card from Maplins Electrical in Sheffield (UK) for it then maybe your advice would be appropriate.  Sincerely, many thanks for your time in replying - it caused me to smile and perhaps get all things into some sort of perspective as far a life is concerned over here.

Do you have Yahoo installed on your phone ?

If so go into settings and turn off audio notifications

The problem you describe sounds (lol) like an app that has been configured to make a noise when its updated, perhaps you should open each one to see if an audio setting for updates etc is turned on.

Hope this helps

no worries.

it's just that without some kind of "visual" there's just too many possibilities to easily guess what is causing that pinging, so asked about the pic.

anyways I think nickmanchester2 is going to help you?

  my three eldest kids

alternatively, maybe one of them could determine the cause?  Like my dad would say, "why have kids at all if you can't make them do things for you?"

anyways there's not that much "magic" to "smartphones", don't sell yourself short, just keep at it and you'll figure it out

Chris you clearly are over your head on this one. You indicate you reside on the darkside of Patters. You live in a housing village or condo I would guess and lets hope you have a few neighbors/friends. This type of phone has been around for years now and there are a host of people that can configure these things in their sleep. You and the wife must know someone that has a similar phone and can certainly help on this issue.

Trying to get this resolved here on TV without being able to see the phone and press the keys and screens is near impossible. Your knowledge of the phone is admitted to be none existent short of turning it on. You do not say what phone your wife is currently using while waiting for the I phone but my bet she has many friends that have new Samsung phones. They can also help here

I think a reply above said he was willing to help too. Another Darksider I think. You are never too old to learn a few new tricks. I too am 69 and jumped in with both feet a few years ago and now the new phones don't scare me anymore.

Plenty of locals around to get you on the right track

Oh and the I phone is not that great. Your wife needs to look at the Androids. The I phone is just an expensive status symbol.
