Man confronts mall's 'VIP' misuse of disabled parking (VIDEO)

PATTAYA: -- A disabled man confronted a security guard in the parking lot of Central Festival Pattaya Beach after he found out the parking spaces reserved for handicapped visitors were full.

In a video posted last week, YouTube user “Saba Image” asks a security guard at the mall why disabled parking spaces are always clogged with expensive cars.

"These cars have VIP passes," the security guard in the video tells him apologetically.

"So they’re VIP?” the disabled man says. “That’s irrelevant to disabled parking spaces.”

"There are still more disabled parking spaces over there,” the guard responds. “I'm so sorry."

"You cannot allow them to park. If you want the VIP to park here then change the sign to ‘VIP’,” he says.

“It's impossible for people in wheelchairs to get out of their cars parked in regular spaces. I've been here several times, and you let them park here every time. It means the mall’s management is not attentive. But it's okay, these people just have no conscience." [read more...]

At least he got an apology from Central. A step in the right direction.

Amongst all the selfies and other narcissistic rubbish, it's great to see social media being used to effect positive change.

Why do I not find it surprising that people that are not disabled are parking in the disabled only parking places. Just last week their was a article in the Bkk Post about a driver complaining that the parking attendants at the Emporium Mall on Sukhumvit would only let drivers of expensive cars (Mercedes, BMW etc) park in certain areas and not allow lower priced cars to park there.

should be like Australia where you are given a disability notice for your windscreen ...u have not one on display in a disability zone then you are fined around $250

the only way to get a disabled sticker is that a doctor has to examine you and sigh the form and transport has to interview person to make certain you are disabled

I have one because of motorcycle accident and use it here in Thailand...when security see the sticker they guide me into the disabled zone

Shame Central Festival, Shame!

How many wheelchair disabled could come to park in the mall every day? 3? 4? Not so hard to keep the spaces free for them.

The rich Audi, Mercedes drivers might have to be given a different VIP space...maybe a further 15 metres away. No big deal for the shopping centre.

More of a bastard falling out of your wheelchair while reaching down to deflate the tyres

That's just sad.

In European country's, the cars would tow away what is very expensive. Plus a decent fine.

These signs should read.........................."IF YOU TAKE MY PARKING SPACE, WILL YOU TAKE MY HANDICAP TOO?"

Very happy to see the man fighting for the rights of disabled. Good job and it would have been better if he has shown the car registered plate numbers in the recording. Keep it up.

Hope he goes back and checks again in a few days and then a few more days to check if the situation has really changed.

Well done to the gentleman for complaining.

Used to have the same problems in the UK at the local Tesco, The worst offenders were middle aged women driving SUV's for some reason. If you politely pointed out they were parking in a disabled area most seemed to look through you and pretend you weren't there. One or two were abusive saying they would park where they liked. Charming. Eventually Tesco started taking action but the appalling attitude of some people who think a bit of money makes them mega important is unreal.

Here, at the local Big C I only use the disabled parking if my son is with us. Most times I manage to get one of the spots buts its annoying to have to struggle in a standard space and then see some prat and his tarted up mia noi waltz out of one of the restaurants and over to his car parked for convenience in the disabled area.

My wife tells me not to say anything here, as Thai people don't like to be corrected by a foreigner; and most like that wouldn't know right from wrong in any case.

What is with this vip lameness??? Lmfao. Just coz one has more money then the other it doesn't make that person any better.

Try looking at the disabled parking at the Lotus Tesco Kamthien Chiang Mai. No Benz or Rolls at all .... they cannot get in as there are always about 20[ lotsa staff] motos there. They have 2 disabled and 2 spaces for mothers with small children in strollers. All full of motos. ........ and the security staff couldn't less cuz they are parked there too......

go upstairs and try and find a duty mgr..... 5555555

Someone needs to go in there and run a chain through all the wheels , lock it off , just walk away and let them try an figure it out while secretly taking a video of the whole confusion.

That guy is a real life hero.

Very polite and courteous while making his point stand. He believes in upholding the rights of people without the intention of just wanting to fight.

What's that civic doing there =.=

Agreed. Now many new malls have special parking areas for people who pay extra for the the privilege of parking in a prime spot. It's a damn disgrace.

I am disabled (paralyzedfrom the waist down)

A few weeks ago,my wife parked in disabled bay at tesco Khonkaen. I was in the car wife in the store Thai man stops, tells me he always parks in this spot, farangs cannot park here. Wife comes out of store,he starts mouthing of at her this is my parking bay. My wife went back in the store other drivers by now are not happy they cannot get passed.

A crazy situation caused by a selfish prat who did not want to walk a few meters.

Perfect. Show their license plates so all know the arrogance of some people. But it could be that they are all serverely mentally handicapped suffering from rich kid syndrome?

Well done. Hopefully more Thais will wake up.

Plenty of Australians too park in disabled parking bays using their parents disabled permit. A friend always does it in Brisbane, I find it so embarrasing. I think that people who park in disabled parking bays must be disabled too..... In the brain and heart.

In the UK the disabled parking spots are full of nice cars, all are disabled and the cars are free.

All Thais are the same - except some Thais are more Thais than other Thais.

1) Central with its abundance of staff standing around for absof"*ç%kely no use could delegate one person to manually handle the handicapped lots; those cars are usually clearly marked and the drivers usually do not jump up and down the lanes

2) the customers - HALLO, handicapped are customers too - should be advised to shop elsewhere

3) 4 flat tires are exciting for those VIPs as they arrive without drivers and the Khunyings and Chao Khongs can deal with the problem - note to self: put little "handicapped" sticks onto the air inflating nozzles to drive the message definitely home; some spare sticker lets possibly over the door handles
