Pitbulls - Are they really that bad?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I am after getting a dog as I have moved into a large house with a fair bit of land and missing having one around,

My mate had a pitbull in Phuket that I looked after for a few days and it was a great dog, it stinks and is thick as two planks but it was a really nice natured dog.. I want a dog that is going to protect the house against burglers but one that also isn't a threat to the new baby due (not that I would leave them together unattended)...

I have read up on pitbulls and lots of people saying they are'nt as nasty as people make them and are great dogs, however I do not know if I should risk it with kids around.... what do you guys think to pitbulls? Any of you have one? I have had a staffie some years ago in the UK which was a great dog,

Also can anyone suggest any good breeds in Thailand that I can do some research on?

Thanks

Wasn't it your Pitbull that ate someones cat? They will eat babies if they get the chance.

The best guard dog you can get is a small dog like a terrier or poodle which are intelligent and will warn you someone is snooping around.

Depends on whether you are a Chav or not, have you worked the markets?

Get yourself a female Bang kaew dog, it will love you more than your mother and your mrs.

Teach it to speak English, that throws the Thais, teach it about eating from the plate etc etc.

Be aware, mine ate the back of the passenger seat in my car out of boredom.

Sgt Somchai pulled me over one time and asked me to unwind the window, I told him I couldnt, he would have none of it.

Next second "ee" Gaew who had been sleeping in the passenger footwell launched herself at the open space in the window, a paw went through first followed by a head and a load of snapping teeth, Sgt Somchai lept backwards in disbelief.

The other side of the story is, my knackers were the size of watermelons, the poor dog was furiously trying to launch herself threw the window by using her back paws.

Brilliant dogs, very smart and loving.

No, I did comment on that post though.

Get a soi dog puppy and have it neutered.

Pit-bulls are always in the news getting a bad rap. I'd take the cue from that. They are probably too risky.

I've had good luck with run of the mill Thai mongrels. If raised from pups they can be fantastic pets.

Check at the local Wat or Veterinary they are everywhere and make nice guard dogs and good family dogs if you have the ability to handle their nature. Probably not a good first dog. Who knows dogs are like people every one is different.

If you do decide to get one select carefully, check out the owners, breeders and make sure it has a genuine pedigree, which I guess if your in Thailand will be like finding leprechaun droppings.

Any decent quality dog breeder will not sell a dog to just anyone they will want to check out the new owners also.

why do u need a purebred?

Get a boxer - loves kids - eats burglars.

Never owned a dog, but spent lots of time around my friend's pitbull. It was the nicest dog I ever met. He even remembered me after 15 yrs. I think the owners are to blame, more than the dog bread. Get a young pitbull, and raise the dog correctly, it will be a loving, trusting friend.

Go for a Thai ridgeback, great guard dogs, intelligent and loyal.Downside is pretty active, needs daily exercise (as all dogs should get anyhow) and training from the onset.

Best Dog I have had the pleasure of having by far.Never had a pit bull but the few I have known all seemed ok, if not a bit thick.

Pit bulls have a bad reputation, but that's mainly due to poor owners. It's not really the fault of the dog if he's abused or mistrained into attacking people.

Only real problem with them is that if any dog does attack you, better a small one than a pit bull. Small ones can be nasty, but not as potentially lethal as a pit bull.

If it's for guard purposes, perhaps as you've got good space, perhaps you should consider a goose. Yeah, they make great guard animals, setting up a huge commotion if someone comes near, and can be very nasty if in the mood.

i should be ok then,

ive got 2 soi dogs, beautiful they are too,

and weve got 3 geese

Would be seriously irresponsible to get a pitbull with a baby in the house. I know any dog can attack, but pitbulls are a mental breed with next to no brains. Mate of mine has one, it enjoys ripping truck tires apart. He's trained the beast, but they are boisterous and stupid.

If you have children get a Golden Retriever. The only problem is that he will most likely lick a burglar to death rather than bite him, but can be trained if that's what you want!

I'd go for a female Bang Gaew, a Thai breed (as another poster advised). They are great dogs and good with the kids. A Thai version of a Siberian Husky!

No matter how vicious a dog is or how big it is not resistant to poison or gunfire.

If you have a dog for security and for some reason I wanted to rob your house or hurt you or your family the dog is useless against a nice poisoned beef steak or a silenced firearm.

I personally would never do that, but in the land you live in people with intention would not hesitate.

My dog only takes food from me or my wife. That is part of training a dog in Thailand.

I've watched guard dogs vs armed assailants in Thailand at U-Tapao. The dogs did well.

My dog's score So far,

Peeping tom 0 dog 1

Malaysian pit vipers 0 dog 3

Scorpions 0 dog 2

Rats 0 dog 4

Doberman, if you have lots of space. One of the most intelligent dogs and a super guard dog, fabulous with kids. Modern dobies have had any aggression breed out of them, but retain their exceptional ability to be trained (they love it). My old dobie was the sweetest thing (and a great chick magnet).

Havent seen any soi dog puppys!

You just have to look and ask around.

If you want a purebred that's fine, although often they are inbred and can be a bit neurotic.

I like the Thai Ridgeback or Thai Bangkaew suggestions. I've seen quite a few mongrel soi dogs that have physical characteristics of both. This is an interesting thread as I'm looking for a new one myself. Ours died of old age about a year ago.

I have a Thai ridgeback soi dog. Looks exactly like the purebred except her tail is a bit thinner.

Pronounced hackles when she gets excited/angry. Fed her from a pup and she is the biggest soi dog on the soi by height and weight by a long shot. Much bigger than the other pups in the litter now as an adult. Stubborn dog and she does not apparently feel pain or fear.

As a pup she tried to eat the foundations of the house which are concrete. She gets walked twice a day and runs around the house for exercise. Puts her ears back and runs like a greyhound for short distances very fast. She stands up to my shoulders and could easily knock a man over.

Has many vocalizations and barks for different things. Her danger bark for snakes and scorpions is unmistakable from the other barks. Never howls at night and only barks when alerting me there is another person around or to warn other people she does not like company. She has sounds she makes when hungry. Healthy dog with minor skin problems. She likes to bath. She has been ill once in two years and no trouble taking pills in her food.

She is an OCD dog and does not like change. How much is her breed and how much is her own personality I don't know.

Getting a soi dog and neutering it makes so much sense in Thailand. It gets one dog off the street and makes sure they don't breed and produce more.

Re: Thai Ridgeback;
"She stands up to my shoulders and could easily knock a man over."
Surely you mean when she's standing up on her hind legs?
The links above are to the Wikipedia Thai language sites. I just put the Thai words for the breeds in a search engine and sites like panthip dot com come up with sellers. I used Google translate.
Someone is selling mixed Beagle and Bangkaew now on Panthip dot com.
I could not find a link to Pitt Bulls in Thai language on Wikipedia. The English site mentions that Pitt Bulls are banned in several countries. It appears that governments are blaming both the breed and the owners.
I'll probably study the breeds (Thanks guys and OP for starting this topic) and look for soi dog puppies with matching characteristics. They are out there and they are free, as in without cost.

Thanks for the replies, I really like the idea of getting a soi dog or a rescue dog, however I do not know where to find one in my area mahasarakam, or a rescue centre.. cannot find anything on the net,

I have been eyeing up soi dogs all day! thing is, I am not quite sure if I should just kidnap a dog as who is to say if it is a soi dog, the neighbours seem to let them run free plus I ideally want a puppy or a young dog to teach... however it makes sense what people have said here to take one off the streets,

Although I do love the pitbulls I am definitly not going to get one with the baby due,

Labs look like a good choice if I cannot find a rescue dog, I have seen one for sale at the market that looks like it could do with a nice home,

Cheers all

The Wat. Ask the monks. They will take care of getting you a dog. Go to the Vet ask the vet. The vet will take care of getting you a dog. You will need the vet any way for neutering and shots.

Get a goose!

If I were you I would head to Pak Chong just sth of Korat on Highway #2.

You should visit the Nong Sarai military dog academy.

Labs, they have, these are dogs that have been trained, but for one reason or another fail the selection process.

Neighbour of mine got his from there.

Sorry the only links I have I aint allowed to post here they are from Bkk Post.

Just do a google search.
