Benmart
And remove the kiddy porn and dildos and fake pills.....all under the noses of their Nazi Police who spend their life looking for ciggie-butt throwers and not enforcing the enroachment of the stalls and the goods they sell. Adding "Nazi" to a post is irrelevant, inaccurate and immature. Please research Nazism and educate ones self.

Jim walker
It just wouldn’t be Bangkok without all the annoying vendors blocking all the pavement and forcing you on to the busy street occasionally when you are in a hurry to get to your favourite bar stool for the night but at least you can get a cheap bite to eat on the way there, happy days we love it.
drand11
Soi 11 is a disaster with vendors totally taking over sidewalks forcing pedestrians to walk in roadways.
drand11
Too bad they cant just find a gew lots/ spaces for the vendors to go all day long. Sukhumvit rd is so much cleaner & more atractive to tourists when the roads are clear. Alot safer too!

jacky54
Just sent all this vendors back to their Paddy fields, so the counterfeit business can be stopped in the same time. Start to make it a livable city for once Indeed, Bangkok can never be a respected capital in the world with the kind of stuff on open display along one of it's main roads. Of course it's almost all illegal anyway, but the sex toys, sex aids, porn, Viagra and other pills along with dangerous weaponry was never on sale like this years ago. It needs to be swept away like the tatty bar areas along the road have been.
TallGuyJohninBKK
I was out tonight walking the same stretch of Suk Rd. between Nana and Asoke starting at about 6 pm. Apparently, the official 7 pm starting time for street vendors right now, in reality, means that vendors are being allowed to start setting up their stands by 6 pm or a bit earlier. When I hit the main road around 6 pm, most were still just starting to set up, but a few were already established, open and selling. A rarely seen sight in downtown Bangkok... open, unobstructed sidewalk space. Ten days ago, whatever, Ram Road cleared but all back again. In many places the small gap left for walking makes it impossible for two people to pass each other without both turning and slowly walking sideways and at the same time being careful to not to knock any of the stands, which often invokes yelling and abuse from the vendors. As previously, large numbers of people, some with little kids have no choice but to walk on the roadway amongst the heavy and way too fast traffic, crazy bus drivers. etc. UPDATE. Just went to my nearby 7 on Ram Road. Two senior army people and 2 senior police and a truck load of workmen on site. Army guy telling the vendors to move now and don't come back. One vendor (sells copy watches - big stall - one of the worst offenders in regard to blocking pedestrian access) in heated argument with army and police and insisting there is no law to say they cannot use & block the footpath. In fact he was saying that people should walk on the road and not on the footpath. Senior army guy said 'you are wrong about the law, footpaths are for walking and nothing more, no further discussion, pack and be gone within one hour or we take everything away and you will not get it back'. I need to walk past this area about 9:00 pm this evening, I'll check. Exactly how they need to be treated. I hate a police state, but I also hate crooks more. This is also how to deal with the jet ski Mafia. One warning and done.

Yes this is full disgusting, just saw yesterday. A vendor sold them next to Nana BTS, and a few small guys in school uniform were looking those products and made a show-business they are enough big to check them. One police stood there around 10 meters, but off course he had to take care of his shop security black work. Nice. Excuse me, what is "made a show-business?" And also what is "shop security black work?"
gazmat
I've always found the dodgy stalls on the main Sukhumvit Road a bit off-putting and annoying during daylight hours. I'd love to see the main road cleaned up and moved 'upmarket' in the daytime with clear pavements, cafes, restaurants, 'posh' pubs and bars, hotels, shops and a few garden spaces. The side sois should be left alone as they have their own character and you don't have to walk down them if you don't like the look of them. After dark, the stall-holders should be allowed to do their thing within reason (no dildos, porn or weapons on display) and provide a decent space for pedestrians. After 11pm, let the street bars open as usual. Shut the permanent bars at 2am and let the clubs, street bars and camper vans open until 5am. Oh yes, and install plenty of litter bins, stop all taxis or tuk tuks parking up and get mopeds off the pavements. You may say I'm a dreamer...

rametindallas
Its a shame if it goes , we had some wonderful family strolls from Soi 11 to Asok making small talk as we passed by displays of Dildos , Strap ons , crutch-less knickers and Viagra About fifteen years ago I walked down a substantial Paris street with larger that life-sized posters of people having sex that were in front of strip clubs. I passed a line of Catholic schoolgirls and two nuns walking the other way. I was amazed/shocked and they seemed not to notice. This was at 3 p.m. and the hawkers were speaking every language they knew to entice me into their clubs. I gave them blank looks and walked on. I would suggest not taking children to certain parts of either Bangkok, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam or New Orleans, for that matter. I have't been to all the European capitols but I'll bet they all have areas not suitable for children.

dluek
It's a lot worse on Silom, especially on the footpath between the MRT and BTS stations around rush hour. And the recent move by authorities to keep all parked motorbikes off the street has made it worse -- they just add to the clutter.

BuckBee
You can't just blame the vendors, in Silom area as example most if not all of the permanent vendors have monthly permits from Bangrak Amphur (officers go round monthly) priced at 500Bt & get a receipt slip. Problem is it needs good common sense & certain high traffic areas near MRT & BTS should be marked so no stalls allowed thus creating sensible walking space & ideally each vendor spot should be marked & numbered & fully registered trader personal details with Amphur making complaints & policing far more black & white. Removing too much of the street markets will not do anyone any favours including the supply chain of goods & other small restaurants & shops that rely on the volume of customers that the markets attract . How boring is the uk when you out & about & feeling peckish or want pick up some cheap boxer shorts or a spare charger/cable for your phone in an emergency. I think the amount of prostitution is a bigger concern but bigger fish & money linked in that so the sex trade mess in areas of Sukhumvit & Patpong Silom gets overlooked for a tidy up ! Leung Falang
Upcountry, there are areas set aside for "flea markets" that charge a small fee to vendors. In some towns, a street in a block or two may be set aside at night for "flea markets" and food vendors. Every sidewalk in town is not set aside for vendors which is great. We have noted in Mukdahan where we live that the vendors on the Mekong River have gotten to be so many on the river side you can hardly see the river......greed by the city leaders/amphur
BuckBee
Who collects the rent for all these 1.5x1m stalls? Amphur will be collecting 500Bt per stall. some will be sublet by original stall user to others & those prices vary from likes of 2,000 to 9,000 Bt a month pending on location & sizes. The Amphur reciept always remains in original stall users name from what I seen from thai friends who have stalls.
