Hello again,

It may seem somewhat bizarre. However, yet again I’m experiencing Soi dogs confront me the very odd occasion or unlucky enough happen upon them at different venues. Please understand, I’m not merrily suggesting this occurs every day, but twice this this week I’ve been bitten last time was yesterday. Not to such a degree ‘was hospitalised’ given that I was only bruised under my clothing although does disturb me somewhat.

Had there been more than four nasty dogs, I might not be relaying this post. Although, by far don’t wish to sound melodramatic. This is not some trolling Post. This is a genuine request to fellow expats to give their views on how this increasing problem could be curbed.

I didn’t give cause to be attacked. I actually offered a very wide berth to these vicious pets/Soi dogs and read all the paraphernalia ‘what to do’ if you find yourself in this dilemma. Believe me, I never gave off any fear nor any knee jerking sudden movements or turned my back on them. Nevertheless, something tells me these dogs can decipher the difference between Thai people and Farangs. Unfortunately, for some, back in the UK it seems ‘snarling dogs’ don’t differentiate and will attack anyone they see fit although most dogs don’t run around doing what they like in masse. To add to this, the sheer majority of these full frontal leaders of the backbiting disturbed animals, look diseased ridden and flea infested. This, is probably the indication (to me personally) for this irrational behaviour these crazy packs throw off gearing up for violence whilst, seemingly acting like they’re cursed in the due process. I’m no expert nor do I profess to be one. I just think some of these gangs of dog are increasing in numbers and should be controlled better.

I’ve also read of late about Thai people being attacked by more dangerous breeds or even other dogs but then again, I’m only stating my views for what they’re worth. Thinking, anytime soon, we will see an increase on us poor defenceless foreigners being ravaged by these could be life threatening animals.

Quote: Dr. Nicholas Dodman, a professor at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine and author of several books on animal behaviour most recently said’ If Only They Could Speak. "Any behaviourist knows that dogs don't like subsets of people," he says, although most common subsets are a broader range albeit men or little children—"sometimes it can be quite specific.

Please don’t give me advice on how to better protect myself otherwise would end up dying with all the heat with security clobber on – hahaha.

Regards

ScotBKK

get yourself a stick and explain them that you aren't dog food.

Or better still always keep some kibble in your pocket smile.png

Are you perchance Burmese? They don't like 'em. I, however, do. It gets embarrassing ermm.gif

No, Scottish. Maybe this constitutes a right .. as some premeditated aggression factor ... cheesy.gif

..

Joking aside, it is becoming a pain excusing the pun ...........

I was bitten once scot, but I think I startled the dog and it reacted from fright.

It sounds as if you have been lifting these K9's tails and they are onto you.

Clearly you are bored by that lass you were tapping in Sukki....or was it the case that she moved onto someone more satisfying in size or in the dollar department. Time to leave the soi dogs alone scotie, no means no. 5555555

C'mon, no need to insult me I respect you more for being nicer. I am just replaying what happened and 3 years ago in Phutam Thani was attacked by an even more severe dog pack however had some Thai guys help me out before I was ripped to shreds .... such is Life .....

I thought you'd take it as a compliment.....no insult intended.

It is possible for soi dogs to attack Thais too.

Dogs....are all different, the react to things in different ways and are pack creatures.

It's VERY important to have the correct body language, you need to display confidence but no aggression. They can smell fear.

Packs of dogs are a problem.....be careful in the way you deal with them, the neighbours ARE watching ;)

I've always found Thai dogs to be insufferable snobs as they always seem to go after those at the bottom of the social ladder, like vagrants etc.

Maybe if the OP would dress better and shower regularly this problem will disappear?☺

I've been bitten by dogs twice this year. Once while riding my bicycle, the other while walking in the village with my 4 year old daughter. As we walked past a house a small, ol-ish dog came running out of the house ran straight at me and bite me on the leg. The owner came out and they washed the wound with water. She said, "It doesn't like white." Both bites were small, but drew blood. After the first one I went to the hospital and proceeded a very expensive series of jabs. I ran out of money after it hit about 3,000 baht and took my chances. The second one I didn't both with the doctors.

Your another repribate who delves out loadsa BS that makes no sense and full of insults. Its a pretty poor state of affairs, when you cannot write a topic without having personal attacks made on your person. Who are you to assume I'm a Tramp or destitute mate. Get a life .... don't like your attitude and would appreciate you stuck to the original topic .................

I wrote about a very real observation I have made regarding Thai dog behavior over the years. They do seem to be going after those low on the social ladder.

The comment about you needing to shower and change was a joke - hence the smiley.

But now I'm beginning to wonder.....

Sorry to hear about that.

I know many of the dogs hate bicycles....I'm not sure why.

I had a dog that hated bicycles, but I kept him in the yard. When walking him on the lead he would go crazy when a bicycle went past.

I can only assume that someone on a bicycle hurt him once, he was originally from the soi.

Scott, carry a small stick or extendable baton. When they get close, a short sharp and precise reminder that you are supreme is all that is needed.

They will remember. Don't chase after them, only use your authority when threatened.

Don't run away, screaming like a Sheila.

Don't worry about the people here trying to stir you up, ignore those posts and they will go away.

Thanks for the advice. However with all due respect. Don't fancy being clubbed to death, knifed or shot by the owners for trying to protect myself. I'm buying a motorbike next week solely for this purpose, save me being attacked on my way back from the schools after dropping off my children. I like to walk for the sake of my health, not because I'm poor nor in need of this transport. However, its becoming too worrying and need to be able to avoid these confrontations of late.

Incidentally, feel I have more chance of survival being mauled by the local dog mafia to be honest.... what with all the attacks on Farangs from visas to god knows what ... it never seems to end ......... I'm by no means fearful of dogs otherwise I would be probaly in a hospital bed in a critical condition but who the hell wants to have this BS now and then just having a peaceful stroll along the road or river banks. I certainly don't thats a cert ..............

Thank you again Neverdie .................

2-3 mths - will have a driver and will explain all this when we meet for a few drinks.......

^ Scot,

I don't partake in the devils juice.

So your hitting the road on a scooter. I will standby for your posts about your pending accident or your opinion on riding in Thailand, shall I ?

We have loads in my Soi in Bangkok, but they really are pretty docile, other than one who thankfully appears to not be around anymore. On Koh Chang, there are loads of them, and they often chase bikes etc - which is really dangerous. Thankfully, I drive a car, but I certainly think that at times a rounding up of the strays would be in order. The dogs often seem to chase Cambodians, the locals say it is because they can smell the dog meat that they have eaten

Legend has it that dogs can smell the presence of the Antichrist and devil worshipers.

But seriously, buy a can of pepper spray. Or fill one of those Songkran water pistols with a mixture of bleach and vinegar. One squirt and they'll learn not to trouble you again.

wear a kilt Scot, that might keep the dogs away

That kilt is extra long......to keep all MrT's tackle covered.

Yes, good idea .... my covert Pit Viper might bite them back hahaha..... dreading 3:45pm when back to Soi Kee Mah for another round of abuse .....facepalm.gif
