living in a thai area vs living in a falang area.

Seriously? Don't. If you have the money then live someplace good. In a lower-income area there's more likely to be a higher number of drug addicts and general nasty behavoir.

not necessarily true ..blink.png

Not all all poor Thais are druggies or use bad behavior... some of the poorer ones are very pleasant and helpful. thumbsup.gif

Well, you are correct. My rental is 2,200. Sadly we should have shopped around as it seems we picked the wrong place. On the positive I think only one of our landladys sons is a drug dealer.

It may be better than living with farang.

My recent trips I've encountered a number of grumpy old farang. Appear to get steadily worse 50s, 60s, 70s. I hope next trip it will be different.

yeh thailand has its fair share of farang grumble bums,

Proof man cant be happy till hes dead when you see a 68 year pensioner with a 21 year old stunner, baht overflowing from his wallet , kasakorn account with 6 figures, condo on the beach and hes still a red faced alchoholic with his head down grumbling bout this and that looking miserable.

But he still has a 20 year old hottie stunner on his arm, to her he is a hansum man.

Best of luck to the old goat.

to each his own, if you are happy with it then go for it, you will either like it or loathe Rarely see any farangs around here unless I go into the main centre, get on well with most neighbours too. Mind you it is probably more middle class but I have lived in some pretty bad places in my years, as long as you are happy it is good. Have to wonder though if you are already down on the idea yourself by the way you are trying to belittle anyone else that doesnt agree with you, obviously you have doubts about it yourself with your commentary. If you hate china you wil definitely not like thai ghettos, pay a couple of thousand more and move into a furnished townhouse on the skirts of bangers, at least then you wont have to bitch about everyone else.

I spent roughly 3 years in an area where I was the only white face. All the houses in the streets around me were filled with Thai people. I never had a problem with the people around the area at all. My rent was 3,000 Baht a month for a 3 bed house. No druggies, no aggro.

If the house is good, go for it, OP.

3,000 baht for a 3 bedroom house? Where are you people? I want to move there now.

Never found one in BKK or Pattaya, but if you move away from these places to other towns and cities, they are definitely there. If I remember correctly there was talk of Cha-Am where the street was nearly all foreigners paying 5-7,000 a month for houses.

Small town in Issan where I stayed for a while, a 3 bed house with lots of land around it was 3,000 a month. But no music or nightlife to speak of. Elsewhere, 1 place with English music, the rest was Thai rock music everywhere. Good music all the same and hardly a white person to be seen.

It all depends on what you want. Sometimes I want Pattaya and the lifestyle there. Other times I am happy away from it. We are all different.

Don't worry, once those comms come in from selling timeshare, he'll be living in a penthouse in Silom.

Good luck.

2k a month, serious?

Are there big prospects in Isan for timeshare?

I live in Sena about 20 minutes West of Ayutthaya , its not a "Ghetto" though. We live just outside of the main village out in the Paddy, lovely and quiet and not really that far from BKK if I want a bit of civilization for a few hours

The grumpy ones are definitely noticeable, maybe bitter with life or something. I'm talking in comparison to similar ages back home. I'm guessing a lot won't realise they come across like that.

Again....farangs in Thailand paying farang prices to live around farang "spots".....

When I come to Thailand my intentions were to live in Chiang Mai and in a house..not in a condo, even if I was by myself.

Looking for a house in Chiang Mai nothing was in my standars for less than 10,000thb/month...until visiting a Thai friend in Lampang and telling her about my search. She looked in a local newspaper, and took me to see a furnished house for rent 20 minutes outside town. I rented in the spot, for 3,000thb/month with 6,000thb deposit, month to month, and with FREE gardener services The house have a lavish garden with a tropical fish pond and fruit trees...and later I built a bamboo garden cabana for guest.

The house was not a bargain, was the normal price. Modern built, one bedroom, one bath, well furnished with AC, Cable TV, WIFI, big covered patio kitchen, and parking, with a very beautiful garden on a big corner lot. Located on Jitaree 2, a gated community with security and laundry services, a big Clubhouse with 3 pools, gym, restaurant and sauna, walking distance to the road Lampang-Phayao and public trransportation, hospital, market, schools, etc, etc and 500 mts from Doi farang, the best coffee shop and restaurant in the area. Many other houses for rent on the same community.

I had the time of my life with the best Thai landlord and neighbords anybody can ask, with the most 2 beautiful soi dogs around. Sure, I was spending many weekends in Chiang Mai, by the Tha Pae Gate paying 300/night for a nice SK1 guest house room with swimming pool, just to change people's environment and meet new Thai friends for few days, every month. Sometimes I was tired having the same mountains view on my windows.

Amaizingly, my Thai friends said that I was paying too much for a small house.

After 2 years, I changed my "paradise" for a wonderful Thai wife in Chiang Rai, where I met many farangs. It is OK, no regrets. I still in Paradise, but I miss my Lampang Thai friends very much, and my very Thai daily routine in my 3000thb/month Lampang home and beautiful garden.

I know...it is not for everybody. I am 70 years old....and I do not like bars..and I do not drink.

Firstly, I would not wish to live in a farang area and I would not welcome having a farang neighbor where I am living now. Reasons being that from my experiences they are not hospitable, not neighborly and not socialable.

Whether you can live at peace and tranquillity in a Thai community depends on your attitude. You have to take into account that you’re not in the west now. For example; there will be the neighbors dogs barking, their chickens cocka doodle dooing at all hours, the locals burning their trash near you on occasions, and also expect that some may walk onto the grounds of your property unannounced just to say hello.

Providing you are tolerant of your Thai neighbors, do not try to lay down the law, you are friendly and approachable, than you should have no problems, otherwise if this aspect does not appeal to you, than you would be better off living in a farang type area.

I would not want to live in a farang 'ghetto' on the basis that it attracts crime. Opportunists and thieves are attracted by secuyrity walls, alarms, dogs etyc - these are red flags to a bull and someone will get burgled.

I live amongst Thais in north Phuket - we can leave our doors and windows open all day and night - no crime here at all.
