Customs dept to propose overhauled customs laws to new govt

BANGKOK, 8 September 2014 (NNT) - The Customs Department is overhauling the Thai customs laws to make them more modern and standardized and increase transparency. Rewards for providing leads in customs offences will be cut.

Director-General of the Customs Department Somchai Sujjapongse said the revised customs laws to be submitted to the new government would be in line with the ASEAN Economic Community, seek to create transparency and flexibility as well as increase the effectiveness of customs clearance. The laws were also hoped to help boost the private sector’s competitiveness and reduce rewards for customs officers.

Mr Somchai noted that rewards for identifying customs offences or “customs reward sharing” was still necessary in Thailand. However, the rewards should be given to people who did not work for the department instead of customs officers, the official added.
