Another problem for Channel 3

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Broadcasting Committee will meet today to consider whether Channel 3 analogue can televise the 17th Asian Games in South Korea - with a favourable ruling expected to exacerbate the broadcaster's issues with the National Broadcasting Telecommunications Commission.

Channel 3 analogue is no longer considered a free-to-air station and the games is one of seven sporting events that has to be shown free on digital TV under the "must have" rule.

The Television Pool of Thailand Pool asked the Broadcasting Committee for permission to broadcast the live programme of the Asian Games via free TV and also via Channel 3 analogue. It also wants True Visions subscribers to have access the event, which starts in Incheon on September 19 and run until October 4.

Channel 33 digital (standard), which belongs to BEC-Multimedia under BEC World, wants to simulcast the Asian Games with Channel 3 analogue, said NBTC commissioner Supinya Klangnarong.

"If the broadcasting committee allows Channel 3 analogue to broadcast the Asian Games under the 'must have', this will create more problems in the dispute between the NBTC and the Channel 3 analogue," said Supinya.

She said that if Channel 3 analogue simulcast the event with a digital channel, the problem would be resolved.

Channel 3 analogue stopped being considered free TV on September 1, meaning all cable and satellite networks can no longer carry its programmes.

This followed the implementation of the "must carry" rule, which stipulates cable and satellite TV operators have to include the free digital TV channels on their menus.

I expect Channel 3 has contracts which are negatively impacted by the switch to digital at this time--it all comes down to money. But it appears all the other major players/stations involved in the analog-to-digital evolution have sucked it up, made the appropriate adjustments to the new reality, and moved along. Channel 3 will ultimately have to suck it up also as they seem to be the only cry-baby left in the analog-to-digital switch.

Is the boss of channel 3 ,not one of those that has decided

to go into exile, because of a court ruling?,maybe they are just

punishing channel 3 because of this?,and ruling that its not a

FREE channel when you can watch it for FREE,has to be Thai

logic at its best.

The NBCT only has to apply the rules, is that so hard ,for some reason NBCT is trying to sit on the fence, I point this out as it looks highly suspicious you are having such a long problem with Channel 3, why, you have rules implement them.coffee1.gif.pagespeed.ce.Ymlsr09gMJ.gif width=32 alt=coffee1.gif>

NBTC has been (see recent TV article by Nations) told by the Junta to work things out with Channel 3 to avoid further conflict for the good of the public. That does not translate with enforcing the law but reaching a compromise. But for NBTC any compromise to essentially circumvent the law essentially defangs it as a regulatory agency. Hence, the fence sitting.

The answer to your speific question is "no" in the sense of current politics.

But I think you're not paying attention. Nothing at all has happened to Channel 3, let along punishment. There is no punishment. I'm not a fortune teller but there is almost no chance of punishment. This is a great diversion to buy yet another day of inaction by the junta and friends, and it *is* part of the NBTC's overall plan to control everything - but no actual TV channels have been harmed during the making of this ridiculous soap opera.
