Loy Kroh Bars closing?

I spoke with the British owner of one of the largest bars in the Loi Kroh Entertainment Complex. I asked him about the rumours that the place was being closed down. He said it is nonsense, a persistent rumour that resurfaces periodically. He has heard nothing from the police, management, et al.

Then he is not informed well.

There was a meeting the beginning of this week, on local level where this subject is discussed.

I heard the boxing ring / arcade might become the centre of sin. The guy that told me was a bar owner in there....lol.... Tried to convince me NOW was the time to buy, with the moat end bars closing down soon. Looking at his 'wife' who was clearly part of the scene when he was not around, I could tell he was one sharp cookie. So if you wanna part with half a million for a shack with no title deed get into the boxing arcade real quick. Lol. LMAO

Was his name Edward by any chance?

1600 Baht to the website to get the addresses of these places, some of which have probably been closed for years? Right.... (It even says on one of the recommendations "closed now".

Someone is making some easy cash....1600 via Paypal for bum leads....

And either as one of the great ironies of life...or simple illustration of Thailand, the livingthai website is run by Chris, a foreign police liaison officer....and so is at least oneof the boxing bars. Chris has also moved into sideline girls. LOS the land of opportunity smile.png

I heard, that the bars on Loy Kroh road don't get a new license anymore as soon as the old one is expired!

That rumor has been making the rounds for many years and has never come true. I suppose the military government might actually do it, but I would not count on it.

Or some of the 'progressive' owners must simply price them selves out of the market.

The last lady drink I bought in the Boxing Ring was 180 baht for a whiskey (probably Sang Som) and coke. It was a bar on the south end (away from Loy Kroh), facing the bowing ring

You might ask the price before offering to buy a thirsty damsel a drink biggrin.png

TBH I really don't know what all the hoo haa is about Loi Kroh Rd, it's just about as tame as you can get for an 'entertainment' area.

People who see it as some place of excessive debauchery, obviously haven't traveled very much.

The funny thing is that some people are convinced that is the only place to pay for play in CM and that Chiang Mai does not have its fair share of "sex tourists" There are lots of places all over the city and plenty of customers frequenting them.

My hunch is that those in charge would prefer not to have the Loy Kroh concentration of in your face type areas. Having the naughty bars more spread out and outwardly toned down would probably be just fine tongue.png

Regret I don't know, I take little notice of names of people who are quite obviously spouting BS. Nuff said.

I suspect the long term aim will be pedestrianise the whole of the street leading down to the moat and turn it into an extension of the night bazaar. Ship the sex entertainment to another venue, like a mini nana perhaps.

There was reliable information on a related subject http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/755046-tough-new-crackdown-on-alcohol-promotions-in-thailand/?hl=%2Balcohol. So far not much has come of it.

Did he offer to sell for half a million? Bargain for a shack with no title.

He happens to be a friend, a bit annoyed by all the punters asking him if Loi Kroh is being closed down. I jokingly made an offer. He's not selling (the nicest bar in the CMEC).

I am sure that there are other places to hang out and play pool with pretty hostesses, but I have yet to find a conglomeration of bars like that on Loi Kroh. Drinking and driving from bar to distant bar does not strike me as a particularly good idea. If you know more than the rest of us, why not share the info?

The Junta has declared no bars within 200m of any temple.

That's most of the bars in LK gone, and many of the bars around MoonMuang Soi 1/2 (CU Corner, Lost Hut, Mandalay, etc.)

Not sure if it affects restaurants, if it does that will be Tiger in town and Dash gone too.

Lots of changes on the way, gotta love the Junta cleaning up Thailand for everyone.

Yep, I have heard the same thing.

Also, have seen a few bars relocating to night bizarre area from boxing ring area.

Years ago during Thaksin's reign 1zgarz5.gif there was a rumour that he was going to close all the bars in the city centre and have them all located in one place behind the old Carrefour...

Old news.....there was a load of bars behind the old Carrefour (live bands, cheap beer and food, catering for young Thai's) BUT they were all knocked down a few months ago to make way for, I guess, yet more apartments.

He will be the last to know! In the eyes of the owners/authorities he is insignificant.

My son is a police officer in Chiang Mai. The Loi Kroh Road is on his beat, so to speak.

He has told me, (that I have mentioned many times here on Thai visa) that the adults entertainment areas in the Loi Kroh Road are on borrowed time. It`s when not if.

Now many of these establishments are trying to re-locate into other areas of the city, or going up market (meaning same thing just more expensive), such as the Nimmanhamin areas (main) and some in more discrete isolated districts, mostly concentrating on the Chinese and Thai clientele. The same applies to restaurants that are being attracted to the Nimmanhamin and surrounding areas.

Many body to body massage and spa parlours offering sexual services have appeared on the scene within the last year, (check Chiang Mai Locator in Google) that are actually just very expensive glorified happy ending parlours. These are spread in more isolated areas and are mostly geared up for Thai customers. As a whole the adults entertainments venues of Chiang Mai is looking more towards the South East Asian markets rather than catering for the desires of Westerners. And this is going to be the shape of things to come regarding the adults entertainment scenes of Chiang Mai.

We know that some of the inner city massage parlours have started offering sexual services, taking advantage of the lack of decent beerbars and supply and demand, but the police are already on to this and soon their days will be numbered also, as in the not so distant future the authorities are going to impose new rulings that massage parlours will only be permitted to operate with fully qualified certified staff. Some regions of Thailand have already begun this and Chiang Mai is on the list.

So for the ex-pats who enjoy a bit of wine, women and song had best to forget all that and take up visiting the temples and shopping malls instead.

Interesting report, and good for raising the tone in that part of the city, but the reality is many of the girls will just go freelance and will be attracted to venues which will become well known magnets for punters in need.

There may well be such venues now? Not lived in the city for nearly 5 yrs now......

Yeah and these 'tenants' can kiss any chance of recouping their ridiculous in-going key money investment goodbye. ..... Poor bastar'ds

i stumbled across a blue print somewhere (sorry can't remember location , i think it was in Thai) for the Anusarn market area. That would of course be up Chang Beers sleeve.

I also heard that Kampaengdin would be targetted/ created as another "walking street"

I'm sure these are all projects with extremely deep pockets but there's not really the "demand" to justify the "supply".

I think it more of a case of these areas being the "trendy" focus for some of the big money.

So its a possibility that you may see the Nimmanhaeminification of Loi Kroh Rd.

From what I have heard Loih Kro bars are being targeted and many of the bar owners I know have already rented new premises near to Foxy Lady opposite the car park just before Foxy Lady at the back of the night bazarr.

More than 40 units have already been rented on the 2nd and 3rd floor and some Bar owners have already opened bars there with many more to follow.

Yep, such a thought will have the owners of the shacks salivating at the prospects of selling to a condo developer, or dare I say a new Central Mall.

There were only about three bars open there in March.

By the time I returned in July, they'd all closed down.

Most of the younger and more attractive girls that used to work the Loi Kroh Road and surrounding areas moved on 10 or more years ago. All that is left in the Loi Kroh Road are the older women and rejects that would find it extremely difficult to find similar employment elsewhere.

The best of them went to work in the so-called karaoke clubs in Chiang Mai Land and close by in the Chang Klan Road, but even those have not escaped the clamp downs and what remains are only the remnants of what used to be. I also very much doubt that the looker girls would go freelance, as most have now caught on that they are in supply and demand in Chiang Mai and aim for the higher end of the Chiang Mai adult entertainments industries, such as so-called high class escorts working for online agencies and the new body to body massage and spa parlours.

I have it on good word that quite a few of the Loi Kroh girls have already taken to freelancing in the streets during the late hours and many others have taken up employment in the numerous massage parlours that more and more seem to appear every month. But as I mentioned previously, the police are on to this and soon these outlets of employment may longer be available to them.

I think in the near future the shape of events to come will become known as the great Loi Kroh Road dispersia and perhaps the Nimmanhaemin becoming their new promised land.

Beetlejuice...you have been saying the same thing year after year its hard to find a Loi Kroh thread without your inside knowledge or prophecy of doom. so far its Beetlejiuce 0 and Loi Kroh about a dozen new outlets.......but keep on my friend....be resilient...be consistent ..be steadfast ...eventually you will be right.

I await the "I told you so post"......just hope I am still alive to see it. I reckon I still have a good twenty years left so not overly confident. smile.png

Hope your intel is better than the info about freelancers in the early morning...you might if you are very lucky find less than a handful of girls....but there are a lot wearing dresses.

Sounds like you have (business) interests there? Any truth in the recent local consultations with the municipality?

No interests at all I am afraid. I know one bar owner (who relocated from the boxing bar to the road itself and is making a killing there). You do see heaps of ladyboys after 1.00am ish and there less than a handful of regular female freelancers (who do not come from the bars) who prey on the more inebriated folk and to me look worn and drugged out and generally hard. Non drinker myself. I go there to catch up with a few friends maybe once a week (for a few of us this may be our only face to face farang to farang conversation in the week) on different nights and people watch...some good some bad...but its amazingly bland. As one poster has mentioned before...if you are offended by Loi Kroh you must have a pretty low threshold and limited horizon (and certainly never played union or completed military service smile.png ).

I have noticed that the girls who used to sit outside of the karaokes on Chang Klan (and even stand in the street occasionally and get you stop the car) are gone. They are still there, but tucked away inside. If you drive by and someone opens the door you can see them sitting there inside the doorway.
