I am enrolled in a Master´s degree program at a Thai University and will be in Thailand for at least 2 more years.

Therefore I am looking for a longterm Health and Accident Insurance solution. (currently I have a travel insurance that I extend monthly)

I asked at University, but they do not provide Insurance, so I´ll have to take care of it myself....

I am in my 20ies and have no relevant medical history

I got a quote from my insurance guy in my homecountry, that would cost me 20.000 Baht a year (they cover every medical bill from a 100 euros upwards). They would also transport me home, in case of emergency.

Is there a Thai Insurance Scheme I would be eligible for? And can anyone recommend a Thai Insurance company? I am also driving a motorbike, and with the accident statistics in this country and with what you see on the roads on a daily basis I would really like to be covered as good as possible. .

How highly should I value the possibility of being brought home vs. the probably lower cost of insurance in Thailand?

If anyone can enlighten me on this subject, I would be very grateful...

Thanks in advance!

I am very surprised the University does not offer anything. If it is a government university (even a private college within one, e.g. Mahidol Univ Intl College) they usually have an arrangement with nearby government facilities to provide free care to students. You might try asking again but instad of saying insurnace, ask if there is an arrangement for students to can get free health care at government hospital.

Which University is this?

Its an International Program at Chiang Mai University.

So you think there should be some kind of cover? In that case I will try and ask again, maybe it was a misunderstanding...

I think that there will be an arrangement for students to receive free care at the University Hospital. Which is not the same as insurance cover, i.e. it is not valid at any other facility. Ask specifically if, as a student, you are eligible for free (or 30 baht) care at the government hospital. I would be surprised if not the case.

Tuition fee per semester is 80.000 Baht. I am not quite sure, if your plan would make sense financially, if you´re not genuinely interested in the study... biggrin.png

I´ll report back, once I talked to Uni again....

Thanks for the heads up, Sheryl!

I got my answers from Uni now:

I can go and see a doctor at University hospital, but they will only cover medical attention up to 3000 baht (thats included in my student ID)

Obviously that will only be helpful while in Chiang Mai, but not if I´m going to be anywhere else in Thailand.

But the secretary set up an appointment with her recommended Thai Insurance Company and this is probably where I will be getting it...
