Cheapest flight so far stopping off in amsterdam

Featured Replies

Hey All,

I usually pay around 320-500 for my single flights depending on if I want direct or if I can hack the long journey and save a few quid.

I have just booked a flight from Amsterdam airport to Bangkok for 230quid with a duration of 13hours, I have also booked a flight to amsterdam from london for 26 quid, total cost 256 quid which is really cheap. I have never thought of booking my own connections but seems the best way to go, just wondering if anyone else has stopped via Amsterdam? I am going to be staying over night to check the place out,

Cheers

The high price is due to UK departure tax which you don't need to pay if you have a separate flight to Amsterdam

The tax fees depend on the type of flight. Intercontinental flights get hit the hardest even if they transit elsewhere in Europe !

I see thanks for the information, well it isn't the worst to have a nights stay in Amsterdam, can think of worse! :)

Been to Amsterdam many times in the past.

Very convenient trains between Schipol and Amsterdam - but be careful of pickpockets and luggage thieves.

Large variety of accommodation in Amsterdam. Although I have stayed overnight at the adjacent airport hotel a couple of times, I preferred to stay in Amsterdam itself, but within walking distance to the Centraal (train) Station (for convenient departure).

As for eats - again, good variety, I personally liked the seafood and Jenever.

Things to do if you only have 1 day - the Rijksmuseum, maybe an "Amsterdam Highlights" coach tour (to get the lay of the land), and a canal tour. Maybe a "coffee shop".

Try the Sex Museum, and in the evening wander around the Red Light district and look at the window displays. I think the dog turd problem has improved, but look downwards whilst perambulating.

I found the Dutch to be very nice, speak good English, and very tall(!). However, there is also a large section who are criminals and drunkards.

Proost!

tallest nation in the world! average adult is 1.85 m or 6' 1"

"I am going to be staying over night to check the place out",

Then De Wallen is a must to check out at night, even if you are only interested in temples & pad thai. wink.png

If you have day time spare the Rijksmuseum and Ann Frank's House are a must. Rent a bike, take a canal tour, too bad so little time as Amsterdam and surrounds is a fantastic place, even if they do put mayonnaise on chips.

To be honest guys, I have been to Amsterdam a good 5 times previously with friends, usually for the herbal delights other organic material... generally a cheap lads get away which usually got quite heavy. This time being on my own it will be a more relaxed one more as a stop over.

Thanks for the reply`s... I was surprised at how cheap it was for the AMS to BKK flight/good flight duration as opposed to London to BKK.

Which hotels do you stay at if you do not mind me asking? I mainly stay at the Nadia Hotel. Pretty old hotel which is not great but I like having the balcony which most hotels in Amsterdam do not have.

Cheers

Bit off the OP...But for any folkes living here or on long break....this is aimed at people from northern hemisphere. You can get cheap direct flights to Australia. 9 hours direct to melbourne for example . Just booked one in feburary 11000baht return. Jetstar. Cheaper and only 6 hours to Perth. Just a thought for anyone who hasnt been there.

OP which airline are you flying from AMS to BKK? I never heard of those cheap tickets.. also normally single way tickets cost the same as returns.

Also i heard you can be refused to enter by thai customs because a single way ticket doesn't prove you will also leave thailand within your visa-period.

Next time you order fry's with mayo also try the kroket (with mustard) and frikandel speciaal (with mayo and ketchup and onions).

Real frikandel speciaal is not with ketchup but with curry cause.

Can be but mostly is served with ketchup these days. Curry was in fashion 15-20 years ago.

Sorry, no, real frikandel speciaal is with curry sauce, mayo and onions, not with ketchup.

There is a Belgian bar near Dam square....I will be propped up there....unless I have nipped across the street to the coffeeshop for a few minutes.

Got to love Amsterdam......just booked business class return to Bangkok with Royal Jordanian for £1223.50.....much better airport than Heathrow....by miles and miles!

For the ones with balls who go to Amsterdam, try the herring with onions, don't eat that before a flight!

But i still like to know which airline is good for single way flights. I flew Etihad this time, stopover in Dubai from 3 hours, good seat, crappy food, new plane A380. 730 euro return.

China Airlines from AMS to BKK direct, return for about 600 euro last time i checked. Small seat, crappy food.

And browsing in the magazine section helps pass the time. wink.png

Ive started to do the same. Prague - bkk this time. Last time Amsterdam - bkk.

Nice way to see some European cities and save money too if you have the time.

Sent from my GT-N7100 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

I have stopped twice their on my way home for some good herb, but for me one day in not enough i usually spent 3 days their on a stopover.

China Air are cheap BKK - AMS

Shhhh gents....my gf might get wind of these "terrible" connection times :-P

I've stayed at the Park Plaza Victoria, which is the closest, and at the Crowne Plaza City Centre, which is just around the corner and perhaps less noisy. I used these because I usually have a suitcase and these are easily walkable from/to the station.

However, both are more expensive than the Nadia - so you wouldn't want to use up the savings from your flights on the hotels.

The Ibis is right by Central Station and decent but noooo smoking.

I usually use the Okura but its expensive.

I am going with good old easyjet

Also i heard you can be refused to enter by thai customs because a single way ticket doesn't prove you will also leave thailand within your visa-period.

I already have a 3 x 60 day visa for Thailand from my local Thai embassy, if this happened however I would book a flight out on my phone and show them the details but it has never been an issue in the past.

Cheers mate, didn't know easyjet also fly's from AMS to BKK. Do they use other planes for those long continental flights? I use them in Asia but i'm tall so some more legspace would be great.

I also buy the same visa as you, will give it a try next time to buy a single way. Emirates is also good enough but i don't understand why 6 months tickets cost much more then 1 month returntickets. One day Emirates had a delay of 5 hours in AMS and had to pay me 600euro for that, not bad.

I think he's talking about UK to Amsterdam on Sleazyjet!!

Used Etihad once at Xmas. But had to fly to Dublin on aer lingus then to Abu Dhabi.

They was promoting their new route.

Saved a bit for that time of year.

Aer lingus., would you like a coffee sir that will be 2 euros or something would you like to buy a teddy bear would you like to buy this would you like to buy that.

Luckily only an hour flight.

Like the idea of stopping in Amsterdam.

When I gave up Thai Airways. My plan was to use multiple airlines and stopover for a night or two. In places I've never been.

Ie use jet Airways and stop in bombay.

Or Egypt air and stop in Cairo.

But got addicted to etihad air miles.

It is the second time I hear about this 6 hour flight to Perth

I have checked the Jetstar and get 12hours minimum

I love Schipol Airport - it's bright, airy and clean. Lots of shops and bars and the Casino. Don't know if you can still smoke in certain areas, i would think so - for the nervous flyers.

There are numerous smoking areas....even inside the lounges.
